B Med, FRACS (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery)
At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s 1995-1999; Prefect, Chaucer House Charity Captain
Dr Rebecca Won is a Specialist Plastic Surgeon with a special interest in Hand Surgery.
After graduating from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, Dr Rebecca Won (nee Stevens) completed a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle, before returning to Queensland as a Junior Doctor in 2005. She subsequently commenced early General Surgical Training before committing to Plastic Surgery, with training completed in hospitals across Brisbane and Melbourne. After obtaining her FRACS (Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery) qualification from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) in 2014, she elected to sub-specialise and obtained PFET (Post Fellowship Education & Training) in Hand Surgery, from RACS and the Australian Hand Surgical Society in 2017. She was the first to obtain this qualification and in 2021 remains the only Plastic Surgeon in Queensland to do so.
Dr Won works in private practice in Brisbane, in hand, skin cancer and cosmetic breast surgery. She is also Visiting Medical Officer for Queensland Health at the Royal Brisbane & Women’s Hospital in both the Hand Surgery and Plastic Surgical units. This involves training the current Plastic Surgical Trainees and many cohorts of junior doctors.
She is a senior lecturer for the Medical School at The University of Queensland, the current Queensland Chair of the Younger Fellows Committee of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, sits on the Therapeutic Procedures Committee for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), and participates in the Orthopaedic Implementation Liaison Group for the Medicare Review Committee. Dr Won also volunteers with the Independent Doctors Network and contributed strong professional support to the Medevac legislation to assess the health needs of asylum seekers in off-shore detention centres, to ensure those needs were being met.
Of her 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s education Rebecca says: “168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s instilled in me a deep sense of women can do anything, and a desire to give back to the community. I never once felt that medicine or surgery were beyond my reach because I was female. Just like my time spent in the Rowing First VIII, I am supported by a capable and wonderful team; I could never do what I do without them. I have an endlessly supportive surgical husband in Chung Won, my mother is my HR advisor, and both my parents provide me with emergency childcare during surgical emergencies. My lawyer, accountant, and even some of my patients are 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Old Girls!”
Rebecca’s family connection to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s is strong with her sister (Hannah Stevens), mother (Jennifer Stevens nee Bowman), aunts (Joanne Bowman, Elizabeth Storey nee Bowman, Michele Stevens), grandmother (Joan Bowman nee Bullock) and great grandmother (Annie Bullock nee Tanswell) all attending the school. It is anticipated that her own daughter Isla will be the fifth generation in the family to attend 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s.
