While attending 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s in the early 1920s, Honour Burcher (nee Hamlyn-Harris) was active in her extracurricular pursuits and developed a range of skills as a member of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Guide and Cadet Company as Brownie, Girl Guide and Ranger.
She continued her interest in the Guide Movement throughout her life and was the State Commissioner of Girl Guides Queensland from 1960 to 1965. She also held the position of Commissioner for the handicapped members. Always interested in writing, Honour was co-editor for the Girl Guide magazine ‘Coo-ee’ for a number of years. She was also a member of the Australian Council.
In 1966, Honour received an MBE in recognition for her services to the Girl Guide movement in Queensland.
In 1974, she published her first book entitled Pioneers and their better halves, which described the experiences of her late husband Cyril Burcher, in the early 1900s, as he travelled around the Queensland outback.
Honour’s passion for developing leadership in girls lives on in her legacy. Each year, 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s awards the Honour Burcher Bursary to a boarder entering into Year 12 who has participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities, including at least one sporting and one cultural activity, and must be caring, considerate and strive to do her best at all times.
