Dr Vanessa Ratten is an Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship at La Trobe Business School at La Trobe University in Melbourne. She teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate students a range of subjects relating to innovation and entrepreneurship including Innovation Management and Corporate Venturing.

After graduating from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s in 1994, Vanessa completed a number of degrees including receiving a first honours degree in business management. She also has a PhD from the UQ Business School at The University of Queensland, which focused on the role of organisational learning in an alliance context in the Information and Communication Technology industry.

She started her career as an academic at The University of Queensland and has been on the business faculty at the Queensland University of Technology and Deakin University. Vanessa also taught in the United States for four years at Duquesne University.

In academia, Vanessa is well known for her research on sport entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship in emerging economies.

Vanessa said her fond memories of language studies at school influenced her decision to become a university lecturer and researcher. “At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s I studied Indonesian and Japanese, so I was very much interested in international business. I have since edited books on Asia including Entrepreneurship in Indonesia – From Artisan and Tourism to Technology-based Business Growth (Routledge) and Driving Entrepreneurship in Southeast Asia (Routledge).” 

It was at school that Vanessa also discovered her passion for sport. She was a member of the hockey and softball teams and also recalls swimming in the pool with uninterrupted views of the city. “My passion for sport has continued in my career and I have published seven sole-authored books including Sports Innovation Management (Routledge), Social Entrepreneurship in Sport (Routledge) and Sport Entrepreneurship (Springer).
