Mr Jon Grant is also leaving us to pursue another teaching opportunity and we wish him well and thank him for his service to the school over the last three years. His involvement in the extracurricular program and his focus on providing financial literacy learning opportunities for students have been most appreciated. Mr Craig Berry (Economics, English and Humanities) will be joining the staff next term.

Mrs Rebecca Neveu-Wirth (French) will be taking maternity leave in Term 3, and we wish her and her family all the best for this special time.

I wonder if we will look back at this time of unregulated and uncontrolled phone and social media use among children and teens as we do now with the same knowledge lens that we apply to the popularity of smoking decades ago? Will we be asking ourselves how did we let this happen in the first two decades of the century?

Feedback is one of the most powerful influences on student achievement. It is important for students to access feedback through the various means we have available. Some of their courses of study offer drafting feedback if they are undertaking an assignment. Teachers give feedback in classes about homework tasks or set activities. Students also have access to continuous reporting comments that can help inform them on improvements they can make for subsequent assessments.

The influence of feedback only works if students use that feedback for future development or maintenance of their work. We encourage students to engage with this feedback within our academic advising and form classes, in order to inform specific goals for improvement. Now is the perfect time to revisit those goals to inform their study habits moving into assessment.

Please note that other sources of feedback to parents in the form of reports and the parent teacher interviews are approaching. We encourage parents to take advantage of the time set aside to meet with their daughter’s teachers. Coupled with the feedback on the reports, open conversations with your daughter about her goals, achievements and areas for development can occur.

We have prioritised celebrating our differences, the unique qualities of every human being, and listening to, and learning from our neighbours’ stories (locally and globally). We are concluding the term with a film study of Garth Davis’ film, “Lion” to listen to the story of the many displaced children across the world.

As humans, we know conflict is an inevitable part of life, but we always have the choice to exacerbate divisions, or to attempt to make peace with our neighbours. This is a continuing reality to practice – to strive for – rather than something we achieve one and for all. How do we foster the things that make for peace? How do we find peace within our own hearts and minds so that we can radiate this peace into our communities?

A prayer for peace:

Dear God,
We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace;
let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty;
let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom,
of joy, inspiration and renewal,

Many students struggle with the transition from the comfort of school to the pressures of the real world, often lacking the basic skills necessary for success. Learning these essential life skills can have lasting impacts, shaping students' futures, and benefiting society as a whole. For our senior girls, completing these courses can enhance employability, boost confidence, and prepare them for various situations. Adding these certifications to their CVs showcases their proactive approach to learning and skill acquisition.

In Term 3 and Term 4, we will offer several life skills courses, some free and others at a cost, specifically for our senior girls.

The RACQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland) will visit the school to teach basic car maintenance and repair. The education team will provide support, guidance, and essential skills to stay safe on the road. The course will cover the unique risks and challenges of learning to drive, the Fatal Five road safety principles, and practical skills like changing a tyre, filling washer fluid, and understanding dashboard lights. Students will also learn procedures for breakdowns in both urban and rural settings. Additionally, students can participate in a defensive driving course, which includes theoretical and practical sessions. They will learn to identify hazards, read traffic conditions, and handle vehicles in emergencies. This course is suitable for young drivers on L and P Plates.

The Barista and RSA (Responsible Service of Alcohol) courses provide valuable experience in the hospitality industry. The RSA course teaches responsible alcohol service, legal requirements, and patron safety, while the Barista course covers practical coffee-making skills, customer service, and hospitality industry knowledge. Both courses are in high demand and completing them will make students more attractive to employers, demonstrating their proactive approach to learning and skill acquisition.

First aid and CPR training provides vital life skills for everyday situations and emergencies. Students will learn how to handle medical emergencies, gaining practical skills that boost confidence and preparedness. This training also increases their sense of responsibility and self-reliance.

Students will also have the opportunity to obtain their jet ski and boat licence. The course includes theory on water rules and regulations, understanding the weather and tides, safety equipment requirements, the buoyage system, and emergency management. After passing a theory assessment, students will participate in a practical assessment. This course, completed alongside friends, provides practical skills, enhances safety, opens new recreational opportunities, and fosters a deeper appreciation for marine environments - all just before the big summer holiday.

Overall, these courses provide practical, employable skills and enhance students' readiness for both immediate job opportunities and future career paths. Participating in these courses often involves interaction with industry professionals and peers, providing valuable networking opportunities. For our boarding girls, these life skills courses are not just about learning practical abilities but also about building a foundation for a successful and fulfilling future. By equipping our students with these essential skills, we are helping them transition smoothly into adulthood, ensuring they are well-prepared to face the world confidently and competently.

At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, we provide a safe space for learning, but we do not remove risk from the learning process. Throughout your daughter’s schooling, she will be faced with obstacles such as challenging assessment or a disappointing result on a piece of assessment. There will be times when she has a teacher with whom she has difficulty building rapport. Sometimes, your daughter may not enjoy the subjects she is studying and may find it difficult to motivate herself. We recognise these hurdles as important learning experiences and opportunities for risk. While it is difficult to see your child struggle and tempting to step in to remove the obstacle, I encourage you to pause and consider whether it is possible to support her through the struggle rather than remove it completely.

School is not just a time to learn content we may or may not use in the future and it is not only about the result on the page at the end of the term. Arguably the most important learnings we give our students are the social and emotional skills to go out in the world and be successful, no matter what comes their way.

Green spaces in schools play a crucial role in promoting the wellbeing of students. These natural areas provide a serene environment that can reduce stress and anxiety, fostering a sense of calm and relaxation. Exposure to greenery has been linked to improved mental health, aiding in the reduction of symptoms associated with depression and ADHD. The presence of trees, plants, and gardens offers students a break from the often stressful and fast-paced school environment, allowing for moments of reflection and rejuvenation.

Getting out and about in all the school’s green spaces encourages physical activity, which is essential for overall health and wellbeing. Activities such as gardening (in our primary school), playing sports, or simply walking through a garden can enhance physical fitness and combat sedentary lifestyles, which are increasingly common among children and adolescents. Physical activity is also known to improve mood and cognitive function, contributing to better academic performance and concentration.

In addition to physical and mental health benefits, green spaces in schools can provide valuable educational opportunities. They serve as living laboratories where students can engage in hands-on learning about biology, ecology, and sustainability. This practical approach to education can foster a deeper appreciation for the environment and instil a sense of responsibility towards nature. Teachers are making the most of this space and taking their classes there for lessons.

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s acknowledged the importance of integrating green spaces into our school environment as we see this as a vital strategy for enhancing the holistic development of our students, promoting a healthier, happier, and more engaged learning community.

In the physical arena, many girls used their netball skills developed as a member of the netball club program to participate in the Andrews Cup netball competition. The girls demonstrated skill, tenacity, and resilience throughout the day to achieve great results with seven out of eight teams placing in the top 3. Junior A Grade (Blue) and D Grade (Blue) first, A Grade and B Grade (White) second, B Grade (Blue) and C and D Grade (White) third. Thank you to Morgan Rowe for organising this carnival and Camille Poupardin, Suzy Edwards and Sophie Cameron for their contribution to the primary netball program.

Whilst these girls were physically competing, some other girls were cognitively competing in a Maths Olympiad, with over 40 other school teams. Congratulations to our girls who participated in this event and a special mention to Diana, Cassie, Jade, Sarah M and Sarah L on achieving a bronze medal. Thank you to Karen Andrews-Close for coaching the girls. Another competition that offered a cognitive challenge was the Da Vinci Decathlon; winners were identified for each of the ten sections.  Our team was placed first in writing. Thank you to Clayton Howard for preparing the girls for this competition.

During the past weeks, girls have worked together to play and create beautiful music. Congratulations to our students who performed at our special Reconciliation Week assembly acknowledging National Sorry Day and Mabo Day. Serenata and Belle Voce joined forces to perform Reconciliation Now. They also gave a special performance of Blackfella/Whitefella by the Warumpi band accompanied by the Year 9 music class. Thank you to Regina Brennan for her ongoing commitment to the primary school performance program.

Each of these competitions and musical performances required the girls to work together in teams or as a performance group; doing so contributes to each student’s social and emotional development or as referred to in research, ‘soft skills’. Soft skills have both physical and mental health benefits and when students participate in team sports and activities, they interact with other students, develop interpersonal skills, and learn from each other. 

In a nutshell, soft skills are a combination of people skills, communication skills, social and emotional intelligence, and character traits. The development of the right soft skills will enable a student to work well with others, be a team member and achieve their own personal goals. They will also help boost people’s confidence to interact socially with others, extend their social networks, communication and problem-solving skills and provide them with new skills and abilities. 

Each of these experiences is a small snapshot of the big picture of the holistic education we offer.

Here are a few things you can adopt to ensure that all family members are at their best:

1. Feed the flu 

Grapefruit, kiwifruit, mandarins, and oranges are all in season over winter. Try including fruit at breakfast if you don’t already and add an extra serving of vegetables to each main meal. Broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower are great winter vegetables to feature too.

2. Sleep it off

Give the body ample time to rest and recharge. Aim for at least eight hours of sleep each night. A small change like shifting bedtimes forward by an hour could make a big difference to energy levels and the ability to fight the flu while giving young brains important ‘downtime’ to process and store the information it receives during the day.

3. Keep on moving 

As the mornings and nights get cooler, outdoor play can be less appealing. Find ways to keep the body moving such as dance, yoga, indoor sports and more. Physical activity releases feel-good chemicals into the body, like endorphins and serotonin. Staying active will give general health and wellbeing a significant boost.

4. Layers for the win

Keep an eye on the daily forecast and prepare for the cold with layers. Singlets under the midi, scarves and even tights can add an extra layer of warmth on colder days. Ensure that your daughter has a named jumper so that she can rug up or remove the layer as needed. 5. Vitamin boosts

While vaccinations and medications have their place, getting an injection of good vitamins and minerals from your diet, embracing our winter sun and staying hydrated throughout the day are crucial pieces of the wellness puzzle. They contribute to a healthy body, but also a settled, calm and nurtured mind.

We look forward to enjoying a busy but exciting end to the term with Grandparents, Godparents and Parents Day, followed by Camp, Community and Care Week.

It was a wonderful experience for our students to gain from Astrid’s musical abilities and infectious energy. The afternoon concluded with the girls learning a beautiful piece that Astrid wrote about showing gratitude for the uniqueness of each day. It just so happened that the ABC dropped in to film Astrid working with the students which added another exciting aspect to the whole experience.

Chaseley Concert Band

Last week Chaseley Concert Band entertained the primary school students with a special morning tea performance in the Atrium. The students performed The Spook by Brian West and the Sesame Street theme by Joe Raposo. Congratulations to the students for their hard work and practice this term in preparation for the wonderful performance and to their conductor Dr Syntageros.

Open Mic Performances

Our first Open Mic Session for 2024 was held on Friday last week. Congratulations to all students who performed. It was a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their musical talents to the broader student community, and wonderful to have so many girls supporting the performances in the Barley Sugar Gardens. Thank you, especially to our 2024 Music Captains for their assistance in organising the event.

Soloists Recital Series 2

Congratulations to all students who performed at the second Soloists Recital for the year on Wednesday afternoon. It was a lovely afternoon of music with a wide range of styles performed on a variety of different instruments. All girls should be exceptionally proud of their performances!

State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP)

Congratulations to all students who participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) last weekend. Hosted and organised by the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium, the State Honours Ensemble Program brings together the finest young secondary school musicians from around the state to rehearse and perform together with renowned conductors. These programs are wonderful opportunities for our music students to further develop their musical capacity whilst also developing friendships with other young musicians from around Qld. The next Music Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 August at 5:00pm in the Circular Drive Classroom 01 (in front of the Arts Centre Foyer). We encourage parents from both primary and secondary schools to become involved.

Touch Football

In Touch Football we had over 240 girls participating as part of our Intraschool ‘Navy vs Orange’ competition, as well as our Interschool QGSSSA Autumn Fixture competition.

All teams performed extremely well, with seven of our 11 representative teams finishing inside the top 3. Congratulations to our Year 10A team who claimed their respective division premiership and our Open Team, who despite a shaky start to the season rallied strong wins in the later half and finished 6^th overall in the premier competition. Congratulations to all players on the spirited contribution made towards the program in 2024.

A big thanks to our Touch Football captains Bridget, Claudia and Nellie, as well as our Touch Football Coordinators Ms Harre, Ms Calcino and all the supporting teachers and coaches for their hard work across the season. 

Soccer

In Soccer we had over 60 girls participating in the program, with the addition of a Senior A team in 2024. We were extremely proud of the teamwork and support displayed by all players towards their respective teams throughout the season and we are excited to see the continued growth of the sport.

Our Junior team had the best results of the season finishing 4^th on the QGSSSA table. Our Open team fought to improve all season, finishing 7^th overall with wins against Somerville House and Clayfield and a 1 all draw against Brisbane Girls Grammar (who finished 3^rd overall). We congratulate all players on their spirit and efforts throughout the season.  

A big thanks to our Soccer captains Lucy Coleman & Tasmin Brett, as well as our Soccer Coordinators Ms Ferri and all the supporting teachers and coaches from Brisbane City FC for their hard work and support across the season.

Basketball

In Basketball we had 80 girls participating in the program, bringing an enormous amount of energy towards each team. We are extremely proud of the effort and energy of all players throughout the season.

Our Open team had a particularly strong season this year, playing extremely competitive matches throughout. The team ultimately improved their placing by two positions in 2024 finishing 6^th overall. 

A big thanks to our Basketball captains Grace and Imogen, as well as our Basketball Coordinators Ms Galpin and all the supporting teachers and coaches at Northside Wizards for their hard work and support across the season.

Met North Representative Sport Pathway

Queensland Representative School Sport facilitates competitive pathways in 21 sports for students between the ages of 12–19 years. Students from affiliated schools across all sectors of the education system have the opportunity to compete at district, regional, state and national levels of competition.

Sporting Achievement

It’s with great pleasure that we can recognise the outstanding sport performance and representation of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students at a national and international level. I would like to highlight and congratulate the following student on her recent achievements:

• Congratulations Eadie Mc W. (Year 11) who was selected to represent Australia at the Australasian Regional Endurance (Equestrian) Championships. Eadie, riding horse ‘Harry Who te’ raced the 100km event, placing 8^th individually and winning the goal medal as part of the Australian team. We congratulate Eadie on her outstanding achievement.

We would like to continue to recognise the outstanding achievements and representation of students participating at a national level, outside of the school sport pathway. Palu Ingram

To mark the tenth anniversary of the Ponytail Project, we've set ourselves a bold target, to move the fundraising needle from $700,000 raised across the last nine years, to $1 million this year.

Since the launch last week, $63,357 has already been raised towards our $300,000 goal.

More than 100 students have registered to cut their ponytails and raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland's research and support services and the Minotti Trust and our primary students are eagerly planning their crazy hair styles which they will wear to school on Tuesday 30 July as a show of their support of the cause.

We have also had interest from many Old Girls, some even as far away as Warwick, who will be hosting their own Ponytail Project fundraiser, with all monies raised being donated to this year's bold fundraising goal.

Professional Women’s Network Breakfast – Featuring Emma Covacevich (‘93), Chief Executive Partner of Clayton Utz

Tickets are available for the third Professional Women’s Network Breakfast on Tuesday 20 August, with Guest Speaker Emma Covacevich (’93). 

Emma is the Chief Executive Partner (CEP) of Clayton Utz - a leading Australian law firm, and recently celebrated 25 years with the firm.

Emma has deep expertise in the energy sector in Australia and New Zealand, and has advised major energy companies and supported new entrants establish themselves in the Australian energy market.

Prior to being appointed CEP, Emma was the Deputy CEP from 2020 to 2023, a Clayton Utz Board Member from 2017 to 2022, and has been a Partner of the firm since 2007. Emma was on the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Board from 2017 until late last year and is a member of Chief Executive Women.
