In a little over two weeks, on Saturday 27 July, we will be holding the 2024 MAYO Arts Festival. Aptly themed ‘VIBRANT’, the event truly does promise something for everyone, from appreciation (and purchase) of the always inspired arts and crafts, bountiful food trucks, a creative array of market stalls, ‘fun-of-the-fair’ activities in the Barley Sugar Garden, such as lob-a-choc, lucky dip, face painting, putt putt, a sideshow alley caravan and more, while on Petrie Street you’ll be able to go on a Kombi ride, take a spin in the super flyer chairs, visit the animal farm, enjoy laser skirmish and challenge yourself on the rock-climbing wall.

This year’s 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Day Celebration will be held on Friday 19 July and is marked by a special assembly and service in which we will explore the history of the school, the heart of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, through an expression of this year’s theme, 'Striving'.

In addition to our special assembly, in the afternoon, we have the traditional 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Run – which starts on Circular Drive. 

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Day celebrations are also followed by our whole weekend dedicated to the reunions of Old Girls from prior to 1964, and the decade years of 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994, 2004, 2014, and an Old Girls’ Chapel on Sunday. This year we are expecting just short of 400 past students.

It is an important weekend in our school calendar, as it is a wonderful opportunity for our past students to reconnect with their school mates, and with the school.

Karen Gorrie

In the video, Brene Brown uses the metaphor of being stuck in a hole to illustrate the difference between sympathy and empathy. The hole represents the difficult situation that we find ourselves in. An empathetic response is someone sitting with us in the hole. Just being with us. A sympathetic response is feeling for the person and attempting to silver-line (Brene uses the term as a verb) the experience for them, trying to move them through the pain without first acknowledging the hole and all of its contours.

She explores empathy as a choice, and says it is the ‘vulnerable’ choice. To be empathetic means we reconnect with our own painful experiences, the times in our lives that have not been bright and shiny, the deep holes of our own existence…. The part of us that knows the feeling. However, in the process of giving empathy, we connect on a deeper level, foster compassion, and build our community, nurturing the village that will have our back when we too find ourselves in our next hole.

We don’t want silver linings. We want connection. Let’s sit together in our pain, laugh together in our joy, and wonder at the endless possibility.

It is the responsibility of all staff to support and notice all types of learning with the outcome being that there is growth in everyone. We need to support the girls in responding to challenges and setbacks and to not give up when they are frustrated but to keep trying. We want the girls to be excited about further developing their abilities, trying new things, and seeking help when they need it. Encouraging the girls to reflect on times when they overcame challenges shows them that they can work through difficult situations with good strategies, mentoring and asking for support. We can use these occasions as lessons where the girls can feel inspired in what they can achieve. Pressure is something that all girls feel at different times, so we need to channel that pressure to promote collaboration, camaraderie and use the feelings of pressure to help and support each other. 

Developing a sense of purpose is also a valuable tool in promoting a culture of growth. We can help the girls to develop among themselves a sense of collaboration where they trust each other to help them grow and where each individual feels that they belong to this community and have a purpose.

Secondary Assessment Policy

A reminder that all students should familiarise themselves with the Secondary Assessment Policy, which can be found on the POD. In particular, I would like to draw attention to the checkpoint and drafting expectations. Checkpoints and drafts are important in assisting students to manage their time effectively, giving goal posts along the way to a larger task, and develop strategies to submit completed assessment by the due date. They also provide opportunities for teachers to gather evidence of completed work prior to the due date and implement intervention if required. Students and parents should note that failure to meet a checkpoint will result in parents/carers (and boarding house where applicable) being contacted by the teacher and the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed. If a student fails to submit a genuine attempt of a completed draft by the due date, it will result in parents/carers (and the boarding house where applicable) being contacted, the relevant Head of Faculty and Dean of Studies/Academics being informed and an afterschool Academic Detention being issued.

Caitlin McCluskey

The purpose of these sessions is to provide girls with a quiet and well-resourced space that is conducive to productive homework and study time. Each SSS will be staffed by up to two tutors, who offer advice and guidance on how to plan effectively for upcoming assessments. The SSS tutor group is made up of ten young women who are currently studying at university and have much to offer our girls in the way of study skills.

For students attending SSS after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the Eunice Centre is open until 5pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Parent Teacher Interviews

I would like to thank parents, carers, students and teachers on the collaborative and congenial way in which they engaged at Secondary Parent Teacher Interviews this week. The start of a new semester is always an opportune time for students to be introspective on the successes and challenges from their previous semester, and to consider practical steps they can take for improvement.

To this end, over the coming weeks all Years 7 to 12 students will be working with their Academic Advisors or Form Teachers to map out their Learning Pathsfor Semester 2 on Learning Analytics, which includes the development of three S.M.A.R.T. goals. Progression towards these goals will be evaluated by the students throughout the semester, and I would warmly welcome them becoming a source of discussion at the dinner table.

On Tuesday, we held the Secondary Interhouse Athletics Carnival, where girls enjoyed an unseasonably warm day with their peers to support their House members as they battled it out on the track, field and in spirit through cheering and war cries. Days like this demonstrate what can happen when, as an individual, you contribute. The result is essentially achieved as a team. Our athletes competed for themselves but contributed towards their House points score, which gives an extra layer of healthy competition to the day. Cheers were abundant as the girls rounded the bend into the finishing straight. Any athlete could tell you how much the crowd can help you find that little bit extra to get you over the line that little bit faster. Girls feel the support of their peers and it is always fantastic to see the celebrations and congratulations at the conclusion of events. 

In addition to the running, jumping and throwing, we saw our philanthropy leaders raise funds for their chosen charity, Eat Up, by organising a sausage sizzle, Dip 'n' Dots, a coffee van and Shaved Ice. Our philanthropy leaders are making a real difference in helping Eat Up by not only raising funds but most importantly raising awareness. Eat Up is Australia’s only organisation providing free lunches to students on a national scale. To date, they have provided over 3 million lunches to Aussie kids in need! With the help of our partners and dedicated volunteers, each week Eat Up makes and delivers over 20,000 lunches directly to schools for vulnerable children.

Our philanthropy leaders choose the organisation Eat Up as they are aware that many children across Australia frequently arrive to school without the food they need to fuel their growing bodies and brains. Missing out on lunch has a big impact on children, with hunger causing fatigue and poor concentration. This commonly leads to learning difficulties and behavioural problems in school, with disadvantaged children falling further behind their peers. Many children come from homes experiencing financial hardship, substance abuse, violence, homelessness or are refugees. It is with these children that our leaders feel we can make an impact and support our wider community.

Throughout this week, students in each year level participate in a variety of activities which enhance their learning and addresses different aspects of the 3Cs of the program as outlined in the attached Camp Overview (PDF 129KB)

The PP-2 students celebrated Under Eights Week, an annual event that encourages play-based learning and celebrates children in their early years. This year's theme, ‘Connecting to Culture through Play,’ was explored through various activities guided by community members. These activities included cooking, dancing, and engaging with a puppet show. The girls also experimented with different materials to create their own puppets, with the Year 2 girls serving as wonderful leaders to the Pre-Prep students during the creation process.

The Year 3 students experienced ‘camping’ at school. Arriving on Wednesday morning with their classroom set up as a camp site, they ventured to Windsor Park for games and then headed back to school for a barbeque dinner prepared by parents; many thanks to these parents. The following day they headed to Australia Zoo for a wildlife experience. 

The Year 4 students connected with their community by collaborating with an illustrator and map making. They also listened to parents discuss their careers. Thank you to Sarah Best, Kate Strawson, Serena Lawlor and student teacher Dana Sherwood for taking the time to share their career journey. Years 3 and 4 students also learnt mindfulness techniques to build their wellbeing and physical health. These skills can be applied to daily life and will support the Year 4 girls when they head off to a two-day camp in Term 4. 

Following their camp immersion days, the previous week, the Years 5 and 6 students attended their respective camps. Year 5 participated in a leadership preparation camp, while Year 6 travelled to Canberra for their curriculum-in-context camp.Thank you to all the staff who supported the girls throughout this week. A special thank you to the Years 5 and 6 staff for giving their time to stay overnight during the camps; your commitment is greatly appreciated. A particular thanks goes to Annette Box for overseeing the camp program.

The feedback found in school reports is essential for student growth. It offers students clear insights into their academic performance, helping them understand where they excel and where improvement is needed. This understanding empowers students to take ownership of their education, set specific goals, and develop strategies to enhance their skills.

Feedback also supports personalised learning by addressing each student's unique needs. Tailored feedback in school reports and Continuous Reporting (Learning Analytics) offers specific suggestions and resources to help students overcome challenges, reflect on areas for improvement, and maximise their potential.

I encourage each student to take the time to reflect on the feedback their teachers have provided and use it to develop their learning goals for Semester 2.

The tour was truly an enriching experience for our music students and one that we know they will treasure for many years to come. STATE HONOURS ENSEMBLE PROGRAM CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to our students who participated State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) last weekend. Hosted and organised by the Griffith University Queensland Conservatorium, the Honours Ensemble Programs bring together the finest young secondary school musicians from around the country to rehearse and perform together with renowned international and national conductors (including our very own Mr Ng). These programs are wonderful opportunities for our music students to further develop their musical capacity while also developing friendships with other young musicians from around Southeast Queensland. Congratulations to the following students who were selected to participate: Elizabeth (Voice), Jessica (Voice), Gemma (Trumpet), Greer (Voice), Charlotte (Viola) and Christy (Violin).

QISSN Netball Success

Congratulations to the 2024 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's netball team, who have returned victorious from Townsville, clinching the prestigious Candice Adams Trophy after an undefeated tournament at the QISSN Championships. Their exceptional performance saw them win 10 consecutive games, a testament to their skill, determination, and teamwork.

The team's success was further highlighted by individual accolades. Aaliyah Poihipi was named 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Player of the Tournament for her outstanding performances, while Lauren Packer earned a spot in the QISSN All Stars team, showcasing the high calibre of talent within the squad.

This remarkable achievement wouldn't have been possible without the dedication and hard work of the team's support staff. A heartfelt thank you goes to Gayle Coutts, Ms Camille Poupardin and Maggie Ryan for their roles as head coach, team manager and assistant coach, respectively. Their guidance and support were instrumental in the team's success.

Additionally, the contributions of the Netball Support Group were invaluable, and special recognition is due to Jane Kovac, who managed the challenging task of scoring throughout the tournament.

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's community is immensely proud of the netball team and their extraordinary accomplishment. We look forward to seeing our girls in action throughout the upcoming QGSSSA season and reminder of the club netball season.

Sporting Achievement

It’s with great pleasure that we can recognise the outstanding sport performance and representation of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students at a national and international level. I would like to highlight and congratulate the follow student on her recent achievements:

• Congratulations Lucy S. (Year 10) on her Australian representation and achievement at the recent World Aquatics Women's U16 Water Polo Championships. Across the holidays Lucy travelled with the Australian team to compete in Turkey. Australia performed extremely well placing 3^rd overall within the competition. Lucy played extremely well throughout the tournament and was named player of the match in her round 2 match. We congratulate Lucy on her outstanding achievement and look forward to watching her journey into the future.
• Congratulations to Adelaide B (Year 9), Annabelle S (Year 9), Ruby C. (Year 9), Danica G (Year 8), Clementine C (Year 8), Lucy B (Year 8), who represented Queensland at the recent 2024 East Coast Challenge. All girls played extremely well and thrived in the opportunity of competing in a national championship. Adelaide, Annabelle and Ruby were all apart of the Queensland Maroon team that placed 1^st overall. We congratulate all girls on their achievement.

We would like to continue to recognise the outstanding achievements and representation of students’ participating a national level, outside of the school sport pathway. We cannot thank our community enough for the generous donations for this year's Mayo Arts Festival stalls.

For anyone that still might like to donate an item or two for our stalls, we'd be very grateful to receive donations of bottles of any variety of wine or champagne for the wine wheel, packets of individual snack sized chips, bottled water and items for the lucky dip stall (minimum value of $5 and must fit into a brown paper sandwich size bag, suited to under 8 boys or girls or over 8 boys or girls).

This year we have introduced Mayo Money to the Festival to streamline payment options for festival attendees. Mayo Money will be available for purchase via EFTPOS at the Merchandise Stall on Circular Drive, in bundles of $35, $50 or $70.

Ride armbands are now on sale. 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students and friends can ride all day with an armband. Pre purchase for $40 or purchase on the day from the Merchandise Stall for $45. Individual ride tickets will also be available. The rides will kick off at 11am and finish at 5pm while the animal farm will operate between 11am and 3pm.

For our younger 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students and perhaps younger siblings or family members, please note there are age/height restrictions on some rides which are listed on the Trybooking page. Individual ride tickets might be a better value option for smaller children.

In Conversation with Lindy Lee

We are thrilled to announce that one of Australia’s foremost contemporary artists Lindy Lee AO will be in attendance at the Mayo Arts Festival this year.

With a practice spanning over four decades, Lindy Lee has a well-established reputation in Australia, and widespread international recognition, exhibiting in Canada, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore. Her significant public works include Secret World of a Starlight Ember at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney; Life of Stars at the Art Gallery of South Australia; The Garden of Cloud and Stone in Sydney's Chinatown; Life of Stars: Tenderness of Rain, at the Zheng Zhou Cultural Centre, China; and she has significant projects currently under development throughout Australia and Asia, most notably 'Ouroboros' for the National Gallery of Australia's 40th anniversary.

We invite you to join us for a very special event with Lindy and arts writer and curator Alison Kubler. ‘In conversation with Lindy Lee’ will take place during the Mayo Arts Festival on Saturday 27 July, between 12pm and 12:45pm. Sadly there are too many reasons why we need to hold an event such as the Ponytail Project as too many lives have been and are currently touched by cancer. However, when the power of community combines to contribute to this cause in so many ways through donations of ponytails and money, hopefully, together we can help make someone's future much brighter. 

We have Old Girls from Broome and Perth in Western Australia prepared to #rockthechop and a group from the Class of 1960 are getting together at the VIP reunion and donning headwear or hats in the colours of the houses that existed in 1960 to raise money for the cause. Reunion Weekend and Old Girls’ Day - calling all Old Girls!

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's warmly invites graduate students from 2014, 2004, 1994, 1984, 1974, 1964 and VIP graduates from the years 1963 and prior to return to the school to celebrate their milestone reunions. The reunion events will be held at various locations at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s over the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July.

The annual Old Girls’ Day Chapel Service and Morning Tea, open to graduates from all years, will be held from 9.00am on Sunday 21 July, and is always a wonderful opportunity to reconnect, remember and share personal histories with one another.

Professional Women’s Network Breakfast – Featuring Emma Covacevich (‘93), Chief Executive Partner of Clayton Utz

Tickets are available for the third Professional Women’s Network Breakfast on Tuesday 20 August, with Guest Speaker Emma Covacevich (’93).

Emma is the Chief Executive Partner (CEP) of Clayton Utz - a leading Australian law firm, and recently celebrated 25 years with the firm.

Emma has deep expertise in the energy sector in Australia and New Zealand, and has advised major energy companies and supported new entrants establish themselves in the Australian energy market.

Prior to being appointed CEP, Emma was the Deputy CEP from 2020 to 2023, a Clayton Utz Board Member from 2017 to 2022, and has been a Partner of the firm since 2007. Emma was on the Queensland Symphony Orchestra Board from 2017 until late last year and is a member of Chief Executive Women.
