The National School Improvement tool assesses the School’s teaching and learning programs and processes against nine domains, which according to the evidence-based research, are the hallmarks of a high performing school.

These domains assess to what extent (in 4 categories from low, medium, high to outstanding) a school operates:

• An explicit improvement agenda (High)
• Analysis and discussion of data (Medium to High)
• A culture that promotes learning (High to Outstanding)
• Targeted use of school resources (High to Outstanding)
• An expert teaching team (High to Outstanding)
• Systematic curriculum delivery (High)
• Differentiated teaching and learning (Medium to High)
• Effective pedagogical practices (High)
• School Community Partnerships (Outstanding)

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s results in each area are listed in brackets above and these results accord with the view of the School’s leadership team and staff. For example, work has been done in the domains relating to the analysis and discussion of data and differentiated teaching and learning, but our initiatives here have been relatively new and therefore, have not been institutionalised in school practice. More importantly, however, is that each assessment is accompanied by Findings which ultimately lead to a series of commendations and affirmations of current practices, and recommendations for future implementation.

From the outcomes of the review and the advice of the reviewers, the school has developed an implementation plan which will drive teaching and learning initiatives over the next 18 months and beyond. The review’s recommendations encouraged the school to ‘narrow and sharpen’ the focus on pedagogical practices and teaching and learning initiatives. The recommendations centred around:

1. Using the full range of data available on student performance to further differentiation and personalised learning in the classroom.
2. To systematically review this data to develop specific achievement targets across the school.
3. Develop and implement a whole school Professional Learning Plan with direct links to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Quality Teaching and Learning Framework and the School’s narrow and sharp focus on learning intentions.
4. To continue to place high priority, through coaching and modelling lessons, to improve classroom teaching.
5. To continue to support teachers to embed high expectations and intellectual rigour into lessons, by reducing over-scaffolding of student tasks and focussing on encouraging student ‘deep thinking’.
6. To ensure all Year 12 students are engaged in the current Queensland Core Skills Test preparation and understand the importance of the additional preparation and their classroom learning experiences in influencing their final results.

The great thing about the review was that it affirmed our current practices and the strategic direction of the school. It acknowledged that more work needs to be done on the initiatives we have introduced and more time given to ensure that elements of these domains are institutionalised in school practice. Not only is reading enjoyable and informative, reading can boost your brain power as it stimulates the mind and improves your memory function. It is also an important literacy skill to have. Students learn to read from an early age, often to begin with from their parents and then through robust reading programs such as that which is in our Primary school. By the time students reach Secondary school, reading becomes something they need to do to gather, interpret and form opinions about information in all the subjects they choose.

I read recently that with the increase in people gaining information from social media as their primary source, the danger can be that they don’t know the origin of that posted material. As Facebook and Twitter are not news organisations, we don’t know the actual source of the information, which means we can’t actually trust it. However, there are so many reputable sources of news and information out there.

A great YouTube clip I watched spoke about how we can use books as resources that can help us almost like a good mentor can. We can learn of others’ ideas, how they have made decisions, how they perfected their craft, the mistakes they made and how they learnt from them, and simply pose questions and challenges to us on how we can shape our own experience. In fact, it is said that 75% of self-made millionaires report reading at least 2 books a month.

It would be an interesting dinner table conversation to ask students what have they read lately. Where have they learnt their information? What genres do they enjoy reading? What do they plan on reading next?

Confirmation 2017

On Wednesday evening, 5 beautiful young women from our community took an important step in their spiritual journey. They each chose to be Confirmed. This means, they chose to declare for themselves the promises made at Baptism. In the act of Confirming, our regional Bishop Jeremy Greaves prayed for God’s Spirit to fill them each with fresh life and love, that they may each be empowered to boldly live lives as young Christian women.

We have decided to have just the ONE Sunday Young Families’ Service this term and it will be on 6 August at 9am. It is an opportunity for all those seeking a Sunday place of worship, especially with children, to be able to come and celebrate in a comfortable age-appropriate environment.

Reflection

I found this delightful prayer and shared it with the Secondary Staff at morning briefing this week. It comes from a small book called “Celtic Devotions”, written by Calvin Miller (IVP: Illinois, 2008):

Our Father, O Christ, stop the ogres - drive out all the demons that make the world so monstrous. Take fear from my journey. Make the oceans small of wave, and short for the sailing. The way I go is yours, so take the fear from my going. You are for me a refuge, and ever present help in trouble. Therefore I will not fear, though the monsters confront me in the depths of the sea. Make gentle but constant the wind that bears my soul to continents I have not seen and battles that require my sacrifice. I trust you for the journey. In my rounds, I heard about many great holiday adventures, time spent watching TV, seeing movies, spending time with family and friends and generally having time to relax and ‘chill out’. I did have an interesting conversation with one group who felt, like most girls, they needed more holidays to get done what they wanted to. Being me I wanted to find out the things that they felt like they still needed to do, and them being young adolescent girls felt like they needed more time to do more relaxing, reading, adventuring and catching up.

On holidays and indeed during the term and our lifetime, there are infinite possibilities of things to do or to become. It is funny how the more possibilities we have, the more difficult it is for us to narrow down what we want to achieve or do. Previously I have heard Erica McWilliam and Peter Taylor present a future focused keynote to help us as educators to assist our students to be prepared for their future. Part of this presentation covered the reality for the young generation about the job market, and how different this is going to be for them. With the infinite of possibilities that await our girls, like all the opportunities of the holidays, the more impossible it becomes to choose what to do and where to go.

During the year, the girls have many opportunities through academic classes, pastoral care days, sport, music, camps and school events to investigate these endless opportunities. These opportunities all aim in some way to help the girls discover their passions and purpose, and to look to their future and the possibilities that await them.

2018 Curriculum Handbooks and Subject Selection
All year level Curriculum Handbooks for 2018 are available for download on the web. These can be accessed by clicking the Learning Tab and selecting Secondary and the links are at the bottom of the page. Please take the time to look at the courses of study for your daughter next year as there has been some changes to the organisation of the curriculum.

For girls in Years 8, 9 and 10 they will be asked in the coming weeks to make some decisions about their course of study by selecting subjects for 2018. To assist you and your daughter with this decision it is important that you both have looked at the Curriculum Handbooks and subject selection forms on the website.

Along with the Curriculum Handbook as a guide, this term the Years 8, 9 and 10 students will be addressed by each Head of Faculty during Year Level Assembly times. The curriculum details and requirements of each elective subject will be outlined. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the subjects they may be interested in pursuing next year. These talks begin in Week 2 and it is important for your daughter to have looked at the Curriculum Handbooks to understand her options.

In addition to these information sessions, a Parent Information Evening will be held on Monday 7 August. This event will incorporate a Subject Expo where parents and students can speak with staff about subject offerings.

Following the Information Evening, students will be required to select their subjects through an online process during Form time. More information about this process can be found in the Curriculum Handbooks.

Supervised Study Sessions
Supervised Study Sessions start next week on Monday 17 July and will run every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday until 7 September, from 5:00-7:30pm in the Eunice Resource Centre. These sessions are supervised by tutors from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s College and have been a great support to the girls who attend. Bookings for the all sessions for the term can be done through Flexischools on the School’s website. While the study session is free of charge, if you would like you daughter to have dinner this can be purchased for $10 at the time of booking the session on Flexischools.

The challenge for the term ahead is to keep these lines of communication open with your daughters when the weeks start to become hectic. I encourage parents to continue to talk to their daughters about what happened at school that day, what homework they have, what assignments are coming up, how they feel they’re going with the content, what goals they’re trying to reach and discuss any issues they’re experiencing. If your daughter is having difficulties, please contact her Head of Year and ask how you can work together to support her learning. Partnerships between the school and home are vital for your daughter’s overall achievement.

Pastoral Care Days - Sexual Health and Healthy Relationships
As part of the School’s Pastoral Care Program, students from Years 7 and 8 this week will be presented with a comprehensive session around healthy relationships and sexual health by Judith Krause, a clinical social worker and sexual health educator. Students from Years 9 to 11 will have their sexual health and healthy relationship sessions at the beginning of Term 4 with outside providers, the True Relationship organisation. These programs provide age appropriate and factual information that meets curriculum content and is where students can discuss and ask questions in a safe and non-threatening environment.

Year 11 Dinner Dance
The Year 11 Dinner Dance was a very enjoyable evening and the students are to be commended for the mature way in which they conducted themselves at this event. The Year 11 students will continue their leadership journey with a series of personal development lessons during the term and a 3 day program held in the last week of Term 3. Students will be informed of the nomination process for all senior leadership roles at the beginning of Week 7.

Year 12 students will continue to work towards their exit goals this term both academically and as leaders of the school. This cohort has shown generosity in both the time they have given to younger students and raising awareness and funds for a number of charities. They are commended on their efforts with the support of the whole school community as they move into their final semester.

Pony Tail Project

The Pony Tail Project is the prefects' initiative which will be held on Wednesday 2 August where funds raised will go to The Minotti Trust and The Cancer Council. More information will be emailed to students regarding this event.

The results of this report will inform the basis of Term 3 learning so that at the end of this term you will have the opportunity to discuss your daughter’s progress at parent/teacher interviews. The interviews will allow you to discuss your child’s strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement.

The teachers will report to you on all aspects of your child’s learning. This is an ongoing process employed by the teacher of gathering, analysing and reflecting on evidence to make informed and consistent judgements to improve the learning of your child.

In the classroom, teachers use two types of assessment - summative and formative assessment. Summative assessment generally occurs at the end of a unit and is used for reporting purposes and the allocation of grades. Formative assessment is an integral part of planning, with samples of students’ work collected over time and stored in portfolios owned by the students. Ownership of learning also includes self-assessment and self-reflection by the students.

The practice of self-reflection opens up the potential for improved learning and increased student self-regulation. It achieves this by providing opportunities for students to share with each other and their teacher their thoughts and feelings about learning. Each term, students reflect on: 

• What they are learning
• How they are learning
• What they are achieving
• How they view themselves as a learner

Such reflection can provide critical feedback to your child’s teacher about whether your child is engaged with her learning. It can also help focus students’ attention towards classroom processes by encouraging them to continually think about learning. Thus, through collaboration between teacher and student (and student and student) to create portfolios and the reflective practices that are explicitly taught, our students learn about learning and have greater ownership over it.

At the next designated parent/teacher interviews on Monday 11 September, 3pm - 6pm and Friday 15 September, 9am - 3pm, your child will play a significant role. Your interview will be conducted as a student/teacher led conference. This approach to learning supports our commitment to creating a learning community.

Community Choir 2017

We will once again be offering family and friends the opportunity to sing in the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Community Choir this year. This is always a fantastic way of engaging with the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community through the medium of music. This year, the Community Choir will again participate in our annual Classics in the Cathedral concert held in St John’s Cathedral singing Leonard Cohen’s classic Hallelujah, as well as in the whole of school Choral Concert held in Eton Hall at the end of Term 3. There is no need to register in advance for the choir, just come along to the first rehearsal which will occur on Thursday 27 July, 6pm in the Drama Room (directly below the Arts Centre Foyer). The next Music Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 1 August at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

The extension of the two ‘arms’ away from the form’s base is particularly impressive as her skill to successfully manipulate clay in all directions becomes evident. The predominantly white, black and orange magazine flowers also add a nice contrast to the sculpture’s brown colour and assists in enhancing the work’s theme of linking natural forms to a culture or place.

Audition Information for Bachelor of Music (Honours) Applications
The School of Music has released its audition information for Year 12 students wanting to enter the Bachelor of Music (Honours) program in 2018. Written applications for entry are due by Monday 14 August, with the on-campus audition process occurring Saturday 16 - Saturday 30 September. Auditions are limited to students performing using classical orchestral instruments, classical guitar, piano and classical voice.

Law scholarship for disadvantaged students
The TC Beirne School of Law Leadership, Excellence and Diversity (LEAD) Scholarship offers students $7,000 towards living expenses during their undergraduate law studies, and one-on-one academic support.

Eligible students are those who are currently completing senior schooling in Australia at a non-selective government school, have demonstrated significant educational, social and/or financial disadvantage, and are intending on studying a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) at The University of Queensland in 2018.

In addition to the scholarship, students can apply for the UQ Special Admissions Scheme (SAS) for undergraduate law programs. The scheme offers eligible students access to support services and considers the level of hardship they may have experienced, as well as their OP/Rank.

Applications for the LEAD Scholarship and SAS will open online from 3 August until 8 September 2017.

School of Economics Scholarships
Applications are now open for two invaluable scholarship opportunities at the UQ School of Economics: The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship and the Year 12 Equity and Diversity Scholarship.

The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship is for outstanding Australian domestic students who are completing Year 12 studies. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year for three years. Applications close 3 November 2017.

The Year 12 Equity and Diversity is for students who can demonstrate a very keen interest in economics but who have faced educational disadvantage during high school. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year plus a mentoring scheme. Applications close 28 November 2017.

Support for international students under 18 years of age
If you have international students who will be aged 17 at the time they will commence their studies at UQ, The University of Queensland Student Services offers a supervision program which approves the accommodation, support and general welfare of unaccompanied international students under 18 years of age.

Applicants under the age of 18 will be identified in the admission process and an offer of admission will be conditional on the applicant submitting a completed International Student Supervision registration form signed by the applicant and their parent/legal custodian.

If the University accepts responsibility for accommodation and welfare arrangements, a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) alongside a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) letter will be issued, so applicants can then apply for a student visa.

You can apply direct to Bond right now. Applying online to study at Bond University is free and easy. We encourage you to lodge your application as soon as you have decided what you would like to study. There’s no application fee - no obligation to accept a place if it is offered - it simply gives you another option when it comes to making a decision about your future.

The University of Queensland: Accommodation guarantee for new students
For students commencing study at UQ and looking for accommodation, UQ's accommodation services is providing guaranteed accommodation for eligible students before they arrive!

Students who will be studying as an international, regional or interstate student at the St Lucia or Herston campuses will receive guaranteed accommodation through the UQ Colleges and UQ's external partners.

QUT’s Oodgeroo Unit offers the entry pathway from mid-October for QTAC applicants who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and place QUT within their top three preferences. Applicants need to have their from a and as this process can take time, we recommend students and/or their parents start this process early.

QUT Additional entry requirements and scholarships in creative industries
For such as auditions, portfolios or interviews, students must apply online to QUT by 5pm on Friday 15 September as well as applying through QTAC. Students interested in creative industries can also access , ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, many of which are awarded based on creative ability.

Several Tertiary Institutions offer early entry schemes that require you to apply directly to the University:

USC

The Early Offer Guarantee enables Year 12 students to be offered an early and guaranteed place at the University of the Sunshine Coast in November. These offers are made prior to the release of Year 12 results, rather than students having to wait until the main QTAC offer round in January. Early and guaranteed offers will be made to students based on the recommendations of their school Principal. Applications open 3 August.

ACU Early Achievers' Program (EAP)

We believe students should be recognised for their contribution and leadership potential, and this is why we grant them status as Early Achievers. One of the biggest benefits of the program is that successful applicants receive an offer well ahead of the usual tertiary admissions announcements. You can apply if you are currently in Year 12. Both domestic and international students can apply if you hope to enrol in a course at ACU.
