Academic Assembly
This week, we recognised the Semester 1 achievements of our Years 10 to 12 students at our Academic Assembly. At this assembly, I spoke about the significance of our mindset when it comes to the way we think about our achievement and learning. Carol Dweck (2017) has written numerous pieces about this topic and says that, ‘You have a choice about the way you think. Mindsets are just beliefs. They’re powerful beliefs, but they’re just something in your mind, and you can change your mind”. I challenged the girls to think about their mindset in my address, which I’ll share with you here:
There is no doubt that each one of you felt a sense of pride and accomplishment about something on your Semester 1 report – maybe it was a result you were working towards or a positive piece of feedback from a teacher. For that success, I would like to congratulate each and every one of you. What I am also interested in though, is what you thought when you saw something on that report that you weren’t expecting, something that surprised you or even disappointed you.
What was your reaction? Did you think: Well I can’t really change that very much, I’m not very good at that subject, everyone else is better than me.
Or did you think: I can work on that, I can study harder, or even, I’m studying hard but I need to ask my teacher or find out how to improve.
I would like to encourage all of you to think like the later response and then confront the challenge of how you are going to follow-through … talk to your teacher, set some new goals, talk to your academic advisor.
These two different ways of thinking are the answer to what makes someone smart or just smarter than someone else. This morning, we may be tempted to think that the girls receiving an academic award are just naturally smart – that they have never struggled to learn something, never failed or had to spend late nights studying. But this isn’t the truth – it would be a very rare experience to be able to arrange your study so that every result was easily achieved and perfect. Being smarter can be as simple as changing the way you think to achieve something you really want.
So, in Semester 2 don’t let a bad result or a difficult lesson or even the feeling of having lots of work to do stand in the way of your ability to grow and become smarter. Stretch yourself and stick to it.
To be eligible for the awards presented at the Academic assembly, the following criteria was met by each student
- Progress Certificates were awarded to students who have improved their GPA by at least 1 whole point.
- Academic Pockets were awarded to students who have achieved a Grade Point Average of 13 or above with no overall grade lower than a B. This means that they have achieved at least an A- average.
