On the following Sunday, we had the inaugural mother/daughter high tea which was yet another sold out P and F event. It is always sad when people miss out on an event; however, it is evidence of the high level of parent engagement and support in our school community.

We have a lot of 11 to 14-year-old students in our school (approximately 400 in fact) and below is a summary of a generalised view about what drives them and what is important to them. Of course, these will not apply to every child as there are always exceptions.

1. They care more about what their peers think than pretty much anything else. This is hard to take when you used to be the person that they thought knew everything. Social media provides our 11 – 14-year-olds with all the answers now. However, I would encourage you never to give up teaching them your values and insisting on what to wear, how to speak to people, and how to react appropriately in conversation.

    

2. They are horrified by what their bodies are doing. Pimples, body odour, developing too slowly, or developing earlier than others. The best advice: don’t draw attention to what’s happening, just be understanding.

    

3. They tend toward hyperbole. There’s a spider in the corner? Get ready for a wall-climbing, horror-movie-scream. Whether it’s due to limited life experience or the trying on of identities, young adolescents tend to exaggerate. More advice: don’t overreact, describe problems in a calm, rational way, maintain a sense of humour, and model the way a healthy person navigates life’s little surprises.

    

4. They are mortified by public praise. Early to mid-primary students may beam at being recognised, but that changes for this age group. Praise, as they still need it; but keep it low-key or less public.

    

5. They can’t be trusted with confidences. At this age, they can’t resist the temptation to share a juicy secret. Treat your young teenage daughters the same way you should treat the Internet: don’t share anything you don’t want made public.

    

6. They’re fascinated with you as a human being, but then they’re not. Young adolescents are emerging from being the centre of their own childish universe to becoming aware that other people see the world differently. Therefore, they may be intensely interested in teachers and love to share any personal information about their teachers that they have gleaned. Adolescence is all about identity formation and sometimes they will prefer their teachers or other adults (like a quirky aunt) to you. It is only transitory but still can make parents sad.

    

7. They are pulling away from their parents. This is a normal part of adolescence, but it’s at this time that they need adult guidance more than ever.

    

8. They are still children. One minute they’re having a serious discussion, the next they’re making rude noises. My advice is to take advantage of their enthusiasm and willingness to help, but don’t expect mature behaviour to last very long. They’re actually acting their age.

September is for Years 7-9, January camp is for Years 4-7 and July camp is for Years 10-12.

Its significance is far reaching and occurs during ‘Ekka week’ when many boarder families are in town for various events associated with the Royal Queensland Show. Boarder parents invite the day parents who have provided significant support for their daughter throughout the year. The BSG, led by Jane Garland, organised the event, alongside Sandra Johnson and our Garden Room assistants. Without a doubt, it was a huge success and all parties involved are already looking forward to this event next year.

• The Assessment Calendars are located on the Year level pages of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s POD and will include all due dates for assignments and exams.
• Students are expected to submit assessment on or before the due date. All assessment will have conditions clearly stated on the task including the due date, checkpoints, where applicable, and instructions about the submission of work.
• An extension may be requested if there are valid grounds to do so. A student must apply to the Head of Faculty by completing a Request for an Extension form. This form can be accessed from the Academic Hub page of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s POD and must be submitted five days prior to the due date. A medical certificate must be supplied in Years 10-12 in the event of illness. If a request for more than one extension is required, a student must apply to the Dean of Studies (Years 7-9) or Dean of Pedagogy (Years 10-12) by completing a Request for an Extension form and further consultation may be required.
• If there is a valid reason for the non-submission of an assignment or inability to attend an exam on the set date, such as illness, a student must also complete the Request for an Extension form. A medical certificate must be supplied in Years 10-12 in the event of illness. The Dean of Pedagogy and HOF will determine an alternative due date to hand in the assignment or complete the exam.
• To ensure equity and examination security no examinations will be allowed prior to scheduled examination times. For students who will be absent for scheduled exam block examinations in Years 11 and 12, they must negotiate alternative arrangements with the Dean of Pedagogy.

All students have copies of Assessment Calendars for this term and they are also available on the POD and in Parent Lounge (in the reporting area). It is important to note that assessment is held in the last week of school. All girls are required to attend school until the last day of term to complete all assessment.

Student Goal Setting

Across the Secondary School in the last few weeks, the girls have been setting goals in relation to a reflection on how they went last Semester and by setting personal learning goals with Academic Advisors or Form Teachers to enhance their learning path.

During this process the girls have been asked to think deeply about what the assessments, numbers and letters mean to them as a student. It has been a very worthwhile experience for us as educators to learn from the girls how they think about themselves and the purpose of education they are taking part in. Much of our conversation has been around the concept of the girls as individuals reflecting on what to get better at, what they need to do. However, when it came to writing goals the girls became very focussed on the outcome, the end mark.

“Beautiful Failures” by Lucy Clark contains a whole chapter about competition in education. Through reading this book and working with the girls, we have challenged them to re-look at their goals and to switch them from being mark focussed to goals that are behaviour and process focussed. For example, changing from “My goal is to get an A in Maths” to “My goal is to fully understand the content of my maths class, and if I don’t understand I will ask questions so I don’t get left behind. I also promise to pay 100% attention in class”. For as Lucy Clark writes:

“Paying attention and a willingness to ask questions leads to a thorough understanding of content, and thorough understanding content adds to enjoyment, and enjoyment leads to intrinsic motivation, and intrinsic motivation leads to a love of learning.” (page 78)

Last week, the school announced the 2019 Senior Leaders, as well as the Year 11 students who will attend the 3-day Sony Camp at Churchie. I would like to acknowledge all our Year 11 students on how they demonstrated resilience and emotional intelligence during this time.

As part of the student leadership process, one of the questions asked of the Year 11 girls who have applied for these positions was “How they will deal with disappointment if they are not successful in being selected?” Dealing with disappointment is an important life skill. In fact, you often learn more about yourself through these unexpected disappointments.

As adults, we are all well aware that life will have its fair share of disappointments and frustrations. At home, reacting to these stressful situations might start with shouting, hiding or feeling sorry for oneself. At school and in the girls’ future careers, these types of behaviours could in fact harm their reputation.

We must remember that decisions will be made but, it is the individual’s final decision and choice on how they behave and react. Individuals are encouraged to do the following if they find themselves disappointed:

Have a positive mindset – realise that not all things will go your way all of the time; look for something positive.

Adjust your goal – if you are disappointed that you did not reach your goal, that does not mean the goal is unreachable in the future.

Record your thoughts – writing allows your negative feelings to be expressed and released.

Smile and support those who have been successful – this shows a lot more about your character if you can rise above your disappointment and continue to be the best person you can be.

Being part of a team is such a valuable experience. Learning to share successes and failures is part of the experience and the support provided by the group after loss is just as important as the shared joy from a win.

Special mention must be made of the Pre-Prep and Prep students who, for some of them, it was their first time competing in a whole school competition. It was evident from their joy, excitement and enthusiasm that they relished the day from lining up at the starting line, collecting a ribbon after they stepped across that finish line, interacting with the ‘big’ girls and just being ‘amongst it’.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Year 6 girls displayed their leadership skills and abilities as they helped organise the younger students in their House into their races and ball games.

After the final calculation, Kendall took home the trophy for the track events, Milton took the trophy for the field events and “The Mace Cup” trophy for the ball games. Well done to these teams. 

The carnival provided an authentic experience for the girls to practise the art of winning and losing graciously. All girls were winners as they happily accepted the outcome of their events and the final results. Each girl should feel proud of their performance.

Thank you to Ms Richards, Ms Rowe and Mrs Edwards for their organisation. Thank you to all Primary school staff for supporting the girls and events. Thank you also to the Year 6 parents who worked tirelessly to provide a barbecue lunch on the day. It was wonderful to see so many parents, relatives and friends of the girls attend and support them. Both the staff and girls appreciated your attendance. We now look to next week when many of the girls will compete in Andrews Cup Athletics on 23 August. 

Downey Park Netball
It was wonderful to watch many of the Downey Park netball teams play their final games on Saturday. Congratulations to all the girls for their commitment to the long season. Thank you to the families and coaches for their support of the girls.

Teams 14, 15, 16 (non-competitive teams) played their last game last Saturday and received their medals for their efforts. Out of the 11 Years teams, Team 14 will play their last fixture round this Saturday. Teams 12 and 13 are finished for the season, missing out on making the semi-finals by 1 point; a great effort! Of the 12 Years teams who include some Year 6 players, Team 10 are finished. Team 11 girls will play their last fixture round this Saturday and are currently sitting 2nd and will play semi-finals the following week.

To celebrate the conclusion of a long season, a break-up will be held this Friday (17 August) at Windsor Park. Students will be transported on the school bus. The break-up will include a sausage sizzle, Karen’s Krazy Kapers, blow up obstacle course, team awards and cake. The break-up will finish at 5:30pm for parents to pick up students. Thank you to Gayle Coutts for supporting the Primary girls throughout the season and in anticipation of the break-up. 

Young Families’ Service
The Reverend Canon Nicki Colledge and 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s School offer Sunday Church a few times a term where ALL AGES are welcome to come and celebrate in a relaxed atmosphere. We use the traditional communion service with a contemporary feel. It is a comfortable way to participate as a family. Children of all ages are welcome to be present for the sacrament celebrations. Morning tea is shared after the service and it is a great way to gather together within the school community faith life.

The dates for Young Families’ Services are Sunday 19 August, Sunday 16 September, Sunday 14 October (Pet Blessing in Garden) and Sunday 4 November. All start at 9am.

High Tea and Open Morning Performances

Thank you to the Sculthorpe String Quartet and Akari Komoto who performed at the recent P&F Mother Daughter High Tea event held in Eton Hall, and the Open Morning held on Thursday in the Arts Centre Foyer. The girls assisted in creating a special atmosphere for the guests attending. I know that all in attendance very much appreciated the girls’ contribution to these events.

Winter Sports

Winter Fixtures

Round 4 of Winter Fixtures saw our teams travel down to St Hilda’s early on Saturday morning. It was an exceptionally successful morning with six out of eight Netball teams, two out of two Hockey teams and three out of five Volleyball teams all recording a win. Our Tennis teams had a much more difficult morning with only the Senior B team recording a win. This week signals the half-way point of the season; therefore, I urge all teams and their team members to remain consistent in their attendance and application to training to ensure all girls perform to the best of their ability.

This week’s fixtures see Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School travel to our venues, except for our Hockey teams who will be playing at the Ipswich Hockey fields. The weekly schedule is available to download via the Secondary Sport POD page or by clicking here (PDF 253.6KB).

Club Netball

Congratulations to our Club Netball teams who finished their season on Saturday 11 August, including our non-competitive NetSetGo teams, who had a fabulous introductory season with 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Club Netball receiving their medallions. On Saturday 18 August, six teams will play their final games, while another two teams commence their first round of semi-finals. Good luck to all teams.

A reminder that the Club Netball break-up will be held on Friday 17 August at Windsor Park from 3:30–5:30pm. This will be a fun-filled afternoon including an inflatable obstacle course, games, sausage sizzle and cake, as well as Coaching awards.

Water Polo

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s will once again be competing in the Brisbane Water Polo Incorporated Junior 2018/19 Season and will be entering teams in the Under 13, 14, 15, 16 and 18 Year divisions. La Boite Theatre’s Young Artists Company

Since February, Olivia Garland (Year 10) and I have had the privilege of being part of La Boite Theatre’s Young Artists Company (YAC). The group consisted of ten secondary school aged girls, all of whom had very different personalities, but shared a passion for the arts and a love for the stage.

Over the five months we had together, Liv and I worked tirelessly with the other eight girls and our incredibly talented and inspiring mentor, Director, Playwright, Author and Education Producer Claire Christian, to not only learn and perform in a theatre, but to create the theatrical piece as well. As an ensemble, we decided to base our work around the theme of feminism, as is something we were all passionate about and very much in the media at present. The product of our hard work and determination was Ten Letters, a devised drama that discussed ten different things that we, as young women, felt we needed to say. It was amazing to have had the opportunity, at such a young age, to develop a work with other like-minded people about issues of great significance in our society. YAC will undoubtedly have a lasting impact on our lives, as we have not only met some incredible people, but have learnt how to be the best and truest versions of ourselves.

Australian National University
ANU is changing how we do admissions, making it easier for students to apply to Australia's National University. Students wishing to commence at ANU in 2020 will apply directly to ANU in a single application that covers admissions, scholarships, and accommodation.

A pathway to medicine at ANU
The Bachelor of Health Science offers a pathway to the postgraduate at ANU without having to sit the GAMSAT. At the end of their second year in the Bachelor of Health Science, up to 30 students will receive an offer of entry to the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD), contingent upon their grade point average (GPA), an interview process and successful completion of the Bachelor of Health Science. Ten of the 30 places in the Doctor of Medicine and Surgery (MChD) program are reserved for rural and Indigenous students from the Bachelor of Health Science.
