There is a lot of research which shows that children benefit in numerous ways, when parents are interested and engaged in their child’s learning; however, the research had not dealt with the effect of the gender of the parent and child. Drawing upon data from a number of sources indicating the interest shown by mothers and fathers in their child’s education during adolescence, the researchers came to the conclusion that in adolescence, there was no significant relationship between parent interest and standardised test scores and literacy abilities. However, a child’s self-evaluation had direct correlations to the interest shown by their parents. Positive self-evaluations are related to increasing the odds of children attaining a university qualification post school. The most interesting conclusion drawn from the research was that fathers played a key role in determining their adolescent daughters’ expectations for future educational attainment. The conclusions of the report also stated:

‘Furthermore, when fathers were perceived as showing little to no interest in the education of their adolescent daughters, as opposed to lots, their daughters were significantly less likely to expect to attain a university qualification in the future. While further research is needed, these findings suggest that fathers’ engagement is important for fostering high educational expectations in adolescent girls.

The 34-page working paper could not suggest reasons for this influence by fathers other than perhaps some still held on to a traditional view of gender roles which limited the life chances of their daughters. The authors have encouraged further research in this area.

From time to time in the eNews, I need to remind parents that it is important to follow the road rules around the school. On some occasions, during pick up and drop off time, one or two parents can behave ‘badly’ on the road. 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s tries to be a good neighbour but a number of our neighbours are unhappy because our parents block the road or park in their driveways. It is really important that we treat our neighbours with respect, and I would ask that parents be mindful about not parking across driveways. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep our students safe and reduce community complaints to the school; considerate and cautious driving will ensure this.

The vision of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way is to ensure social and professional interactions between all within our community – students, staff and families – that foster a sense of belonging, coherence and well-being. There are two key focus areas – firstly we appreciate and acknowledge (each other, students, parents), and we are aligned and accountable (to ourselves, to each other, to the vision of the school).

Essentially it is a pastoral approach that is designed to give a language to the way we are and strive to be in our interactions with each other.

It is about wellbeing and is focused on two questions – how do you want to feel and what do you need to do to make others feel that way? It is a focused energy on wellbeing, noting that all within the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community has a role to play in the wellbeing of all in our community.

One of the initiatives the committee is planning is to have a 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way celebration lunch on the last day of school for Term 3. We are hoping that as many students can join us for a sausage sizzle, music, fun and dancing on Circular Drive. The students on the committee are also organising a Gratitude Board – they are hoping that staff and students will take a ribbon that is provided and right a message of what they are grateful for at school. More information about this event will come from students in the coming weeks.

Some of the Spaces this term will include:

Letting Go - headphones will be made available to assist in the process of reflecting upon things in our lives which we are holding on to. Visitors are invited to listen, reflect and to write or draw on a piece of paper which can then be placed into a closed box. In this simple process, we may begin to ‘let go’ of those things weighing us down or holding us back.

Calm Jars - a space to sit and consider bringing some of the ‘chaos’ of our lives into peace. Colourful glitter bottles are available to shake and observe, watching the glitter settle again in the bottom. In doing so, one is invited to bring calm and peace into hearts and minds.

Clay Pots - visitors are invited to consider the pressures on our lives. By taking a small piece of clay, one is invited to mould it into a ‘pot’, considering the pressures that may have assisted in our growth and change … in good ways.

Grove of Gratitude - visitors are invited to ponder the things they are grateful and thankful for. All are invited to write or draw onto paper and peg it onto the netting wall.

Light in the Darkness - in a darkened space, visitors are invited to consider God’s place in their lives, who is God, what is God like? Lava lamps, a plasma ball, a UV light … all may explore the wondrous possibilities of God’s light shining through our darkest moments.

We witness change daily, indeed in every moment. Do we notice these changes? Nature provides an endless array of change, if we choose to see it.

Yet, there is another change that occurs. Change within ourselves and that of others. As we learn, develop and grow, we change. This does not stop. Sometimes change also comes in the form of pressure, those things that life throws up at us. These pressures or challenging situations in life can mould, shape and make us who we are. It is within these moments that we can also discover new things about ourselves, new personal strengths and new knowledge.

Unexpectedly, we can find ourselves in the throes of life’s pressures and gaining from it also.

My name is Jondayah Martin. I am originally from Cairns but I spend a lot of my time on Thursday Island. The reason I wanted to come to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s was because my mother came here. I started when I was in Year 8; I went from being on an island of 2,000 people to a city of a million people. I used to go to school barefoot, so having to wear polished brown shoes was something that took some time to get used to. The highlights of my time here have been the formals, Sony Camp with Churchie and my exchange to Japan. What I know about myself is that I like meeting new people and changing my environment because you grow as a person. My thoughts for next year are that I’m hoping to attend University. I have been offered a place at Bond which is exciting but I am keeping my options open. Being part of Yalari has given me a strong sense of community. I haven’t just been part of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community, I have been part of a much wider community through Yalari. This weekend we are going on a skiing trip which is a final leap before graduation.

My name is Racy Lawton. I am from Charleville and started in Year 8 as part of the Yalari program. I remember how big the school was and I was so excited to be here. It felt like a holiday away from home. I didn’t mind being out of Charleville as there was not much to do. Some of my highlights of being a boarder have been meeting new friends and having close ‘sister-bonds’. Next year I am going to Toowoomba to start a job but my ultimate goal in life is to head to the Northern Territory to help Indigenous children in their communities. Yalari has helped me to engage in as many opportunities as possible. I have been able to make connections with other students my age across Australia. This is what I have loved the most. Yalari has helped me to embrace both cultures, home and boarding life.

We are incredibly proud of all our Yalari students and we wish Racy and Jondayah well for their upcoming graduation. We have no doubt they will continue to journey through some amazing experiences beyond their time as boarders of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s.

Every Year 12 student, whether following an OP or a Selection Rank pathway has a part to play on these 2 days. It is important that they are all united in support of each other as students, as friends and as part of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community. This will help those girls sitting the QCS tests and those spending time completing Diplomas, Certificates and meeting the challenges of their academic commitments, to give of their best. All Year 12 girls will be provided with breakfast and lunch on 30 and 31 August. The days will run as follows:

Year 10 Study Days

On Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 August, Year 10 girls will have study days. These are designed to assist them as they transition into the Senior School and have full Exam Blocks. On Monday, they will be in supervised study sessions where they will have the opportunity to work independently as they would if they were at home. They will be given some guidance relating to strategies to employ to make their time and effort effective. On Tuesday, they will be sitting a History Exam from 8:20am until 10:20am and a Science Exam from 1:30 until 3:20pm. Between these exams they will have a break which can be used for study or rest depending on the needs of each individual. This initiative is an important part of the preparation for Years 11 and 12 and it would be useful to discuss it with your daughters.

Student Goal Setting

Across the Secondary School in the last few weeks the girls have been setting goals in relation to a reflection on how they performed last Semester. By using the SMART Goal process, they have been setting personal learning goals to enhance their learning path.

Through Form time, under the guidance of Form teachers, girls have been asked to think deeply about what the assessments, numbers and letters mean to them as a student. They have used the Learning Analytics Program to reflect and set goals. This process has been valuable for the girls to think about themselves and the purpose of their education. However, when it came to writing goals the girls became very focussed on the outcome, the end mark.

We, as staff, have challenged the girls to re-look at their goals and to switch them from being mark focussed to goals that are behaviour and process focussed. For example, changing from “My goal is to get an A in Maths” to “My goal is to fully understand the content of my maths class, and if I don’t understand, I will ask questions so I don’t get left behind. I also promise to pay 100% attention in class”.

Nicole Devlin

Professor of Psychology and leading academic in the field of motivation, Carol Dweck has done extensive research on why people succeed and how to foster success. The above quote, underpins her theories and beliefs on our ability and willingness to learn. Mindsets are beliefs - beliefs about yourself and your most basic abilities. In her work, Dweck has found that people have either a fixed or a growth mindset.

In a fixed mindset, people accept as true their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time recording their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates achievements - without effort and determination. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic capabilities can be established through dedication and hard work - brains and talent are just the initial stage. Growth mindsets create a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.

Thank you to the Year 4 girls and Mrs Chamberlain for presenting a puppet show of the classic story, “Where the Wild Things Are” and the teachers sharing their enthusiasm for a modern-day version of this story, “Where the Wild Mums Are”. Thank you to Audrey Kerle, Kalista Sanday, Mariana Breslin, Scarlett Franklin, Lucy Goodall, Elise Selwa, Charlotte Kerr, Olivia King, Ruby Reynolds Campbell and Millie Campbell for the puppet show. Thank you to Mrs Jackson for her contribution to the Book Week celebrations and to the teachers for their humour and spirit in the contributing of the video. Thank you also to Mr Crowe – his filming and editing skills certainly enhanced the outcome.

‘Escape to Everywhere’ was the theme that anchored our celebrations this week. The Atrium became ‘Neverland’, a place to share the act of reading with another person and the library was sprinkled with hot air balloons ready to lift readers to another place.  ‘Escape to Everywhere’, serves as a reminder of the many journeys books can take a reader on and to the many different places those readers can go to; real places through information books, imaginary places like the 100 Acre Wood in Winnie the Pooh or in Wonderland with Alice and different worlds like Hogwarts in Harry Potter.

This year’s shortlisted picture books were no exception to helping the reader to escape. Some of these shortlisted books had the power to take the reader on an emotional roller coaster as the reader shared the character’s feelings. The love of life was experienced in Nannie Loves by Kylie Dunstan and this is contrasted by loss of life so tenderly told in One Photo by Ross Watkins and My Brother by Dee Huxley.

Books can take the reader to different places and help you realise that our life sets us down in places and how tremendously important these places are to a character’s life and story. In All I want for Christmas is Rain by Megan Forward, a reader feels ‘down’ with Jane and her family on their drought stricken farm and then rejoice with Jane when the best gift she received on Christmas day was rain. The relevance of rain features in the two winning books, Go Home Cheeky Animals by Johanna Bell and Rain by Bob Graham.

Books can take you on a journey by exploring the setting of the book. The Snow Wombat by Susannah Chambers takes the reader on a journey around the Snowy Mountains, a great reminder for the young reader that it snows in Australia. The setting sets the stage for the character’s actions in Chip by Kylie Howarth and Gary by Leila Rudge, two stories with the same theme, a bird finding a creative solution to a problem.

Books are such an important part of society and the impact a book can have on a life should not be confined to one week a year. So, in the words of author Madeleine L’Engle “A book, too, can be a star, living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”

Boarder Musicians Concert

Congratulations to all boarders who performed at our inaugural Boarder Musicians Concert on Tuesday evening. This concert was a fantastic opportunity for boarders undertaking private music lessons to showcase their developing skills. Thank you to all girls who participated!

Choral Concert

Fast approaching is our annual whole of school Choral Concert. It is always a fun night filled with lots of dynamic performances from all choirs across the Primary and Secondary Schools. This year’s concert will be no exception with girls learning a wide variety of repertoire ranging from Broadway tunes to pop songs. The Year 2s will perform with Encorah which is always a special treat and we will, of course, hear from the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Community Choir. The concert will be held on Tuesday 12 September in Eton Hall, starting at 6:30pm with refreshments available in Eton Courtyard from 6:00pm. Thank you to the Sculthorpe String Quartet who performed at this week’s Professional Women’s Networking Breakfast. Congratulations to Nicola D’Abreton (Year 6) who recently entered the Enoggera Eisteddfod. Nicola competed in the vocal section (11-14 years) last week and achieved 1st place in three categories and a highly commended in another. These are outstanding results - congratulations Nicola!

Music Support Group Meeting

The next Music Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 5 September at 4:30pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Please note the earlier start time to allow parents to attend the Trends in Education seminar at 5:30pm that evening. Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

If you are heading up to the Regatta to support the rowing community please leave plenty of time for parking and read the tips:

• Bring drinking water as there are no freshwater taps on site
• Parking is $10 per car. Please have the correct change to assist parking attendants to make the process efficient
• A shuttle bus takes you from the car park to the supporter’s headland
• No dogs are permitted at the Dam
• Food stalls are available for coffee and lunch
• The first race commences at 9am with the Head of the River first VIII at 12:40pm
• Supporters buses have been made available for students

Thank you to our Rowing Captains, Katie Hill and Allison King for their strong leadership and the wonderful role models they have been for our rowing shed in 2017. Wishing all our girls and coaches the best of luck on Saturday.

Rounds 5 and 6 of fixtures saw strong results from the girls. The Hockey Open girls had a win on the turf against Clayfield and a loss against St Aidan’s. The junior teams continued their success with our Junior A team still in contention for the pennant providing they win this week against Brisbane Girls Grammar School. I hope they continue to be strong on the ball and play tight defence again this week.

The results in Volleyball have been mixed. The senior A girls are playing a top of the table clash this Saturday against Brisbane Girls Grammar School. All other teams are sitting mid field in their ladders and have continued to grow in the positional play thus far.

Our thirteen netball teams have been working on their centre court plays and footwork this year. The girls in the 7A and 10A teams have continued their undefeated run against both Clayfield and St Aidan’s. Many other teams are also sitting in the top half of their divisions; Senior A, Senior B, 9A, 8C and 7C. What a great season our girls are having!

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s has 39 girls vying for selection at the Met North Athletics Championships this week. The championships are being held at the University of Queensland Athletics Centre, St Lucia. As this was written we have kept the podium busy (Wednesday). Girls who are successful will compete at the State Athletics Championships in Term 4.

Marnie McLaren’s rise in the financial services industry has been meteoric. After graduating from UQ, Marnie relocated to London to immerse herself in the world’s financial hub and learn more about the industry. She accelerated quickly in the field, and as portfolio assistant to JPMorgan Private Bank’s Manger of Manager’s team began dealing with ultra-high-net worth individuals with more than $100 million to invest.

Since returning to Australia in 2002, Marnie has held a number of senior roles within the Westpac and St George Wealth businesses. As BT Financial Group’s Head of Investment Research and Governance, Marnie has primary responsibility for monitoring and oversight of approximately $100bn of investments across BT’s Platform, Superannuation and Asset Management businesses.

Marnie has achieved this remarkable career success despite what many would consider a life-altering setback. In 2006, she was diagnosed with a brain tumour. Fortunately for Marnie, her clinical care was under the careful management of fellow Queenslander, neurosurgeon Professor Marcus Stoodley. In the years that followed, she endured eight surgical procedures before the tumour was fully removed.

True to Marnie’s spirit, she saw herself as one of the lucky ones and felt compelled to pass her great fortune onto others. With that, she established the first charity within the financial services industry in Sydney, encouraging her banking peers – many from competitor organisations – to give back to the community. In 2006 FICAP was born, with the aim of raising money for charities that benefit young people with the support of the Sydney financial services community. Marnie has since helped fund over 13 Australian charities to the tune of $1.5m dollars, including Youngcare, SISTER2Sister, Australian Childhood Foundation, Bear Cottage, Open Family Australia, YWCA NSW, Redkite, Weave, The Shepherd Centre and Mirabel.

Marnie was named by Financial Standard as one of the top 50 most influential social media users in finance in 2014 and again in 2015.

University of Queensland Scholarships
UQ Sporting Scholarships - apply now
UQ's sporting scholarships support students to balance their studies with the demands of elite-level competition. In addition to financial support, these scholarships offer academic tutoring, facility access, workshops and much more. UQ's sporting scholarships opened on Thursday 3 August. UQ School of Economics Scholarships
Applications are now open for two invaluable scholarship opportunities at the UQ School of Economics: The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship and the Year 12 Equity and Diversity Scholarship.

The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship is for outstanding Australian domestic students who are completing Year 12 studies. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year for three years. Applications close 3 November 2017.

The Year 12 Equity and Diversity Scholarship is for students who can demonstrate a very keen interest in economics but who have faced educational disadvantage during high school. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year plus a mentoring scheme. Applications close 28 November 2017: .

UQ Support for international students under 18 years of age
If you have international students who will be aged 17 at the time they will commence their studies at UQ, The University of Queensland Student Services offers a supervision program which approves the accommodation, support and general welfare of unaccompanied international students under 18 years of age.

Applicants under the age of 18 will be identified in the admission process and an offer of admission will be conditional on the applicant submitting a completed International Student Supervision registration form signed by the applicant and their parent/legal custodian.

If the University accepts responsibility for accommodation and welfare arrangements, a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) alongside a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) letter will be issued, so applicants can then apply for a student visa:

QUT For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
QUT’s Oodgeroo Unit offers the entry pathway from mid-October for QTAC applicants who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and place QUT within their top three preferences. Applicants need to have their from a and as this process can take time, we recommend students and/or their parents start this process early.

QUT Additional entry requirements and scholarships in creative industries
For such as auditions, portfolios or interviews, students must apply online to QUT by 5pm on Friday 15 September as well as applying through QTAC. Students interested in creative industries can also access , ranging from $10,000 to $30,000, many of which are awarded based on creative ability.

QTAC: Selection guidelines for initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers)
As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), all applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both .
