Each year the Old Girls’ Association (OGA) invites graduates of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s to apply for a scholarship to receive some financial assistance to study overseas.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Old Girls’ Association (OGA) and is available for students for undergraduate and postgraduate overseas study for periods of 6 months and 12 months. Students in Year 12 who have organised overseas study for the following year may also apply.

In 2017, the following 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s graduates were successful candidates for OGA Overseas Study Scholarships 2017-2018. It is interesting to see the range of interests for our Old Girls in their tertiary studies.

Bridie Davis ('15)
Undergraduate: Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Creative Arts, Queensland University of Technology.
In August, Bridie travelled to the United States of America to study at the University of South Carolina, undertaking a combination of units from the Business, Marketing and Retailing Bachelor course.

Isabelle Harris ('13)

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Science/Mathematics (Physics, Applied and Computational Mathematics), Queensland University of Technology.

For her overseas exchange, Isabelle studied at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. She chose to complete this exchange to further explore her passion in various types of mathematical physics and discover where this field could take her career.

Charlotte Lane ('13)

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws, University of Queensland.

In September, Charlotte commenced a six-month exchange at the University College Dublin, studying six law electives that will be credited towards her degree. She is particularly focusing her studies in Commercial Law and Human Rights Law.

Blaire O'Loughlin-Mills ('13)

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Business (Economics), Queensland University of Technology.

In September, Blaire began a four-unit course within the Bachelor of Business Administration Program at HEC Montreal, Canada. During her time, she is hoping to revisit her French language skills she studied at school and develop her business skills.

Sophie Robertson ('14)

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Creative Arts, Queensland University of Technology.

In September, Sophie travelled to Ireland to study at the Lochlann School of Business at the University College Dublin. During her time, Sophie hopes to increase her knowledge by studying Business and the Law while experiencing a new and creative culture.

Alexandra Smith ('11)

Undergraduate: Bachelor of Arts (International Relations) and Law, University of

Queensland.

In September, Alexandra began her study at Sciences Po in Paris to finish her degree. During her time in Paris she is looking forward to being inspired and challenged in a different learning environment.

Congratulations to these past students. The OGA, through providing these scholarships, offers another way that our past students remain connected to their schools and we are very appreciative of their support.

Applications for the OGA Overseas Scholarships 2018 – 2019 are now open and are due Friday 22 June 2018. Preference will be given to students studying at an overseas tertiary institution/university for one or more semesters. Candidates studying overseas but not at a university are also welcome to apply. Speech Night
The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Speech Night is a significant event in our calendar. It is compulsory for all students in Years 5 to 12 to be present and we welcome parents to join us in acknowledging and celebrating the academic and extra-curricular achievements of 2017. Speech Night is always a beautiful evening of celebration and fine performances delivered by our music students.

Information detailing arrangements for rehearsals and the big event will be sent out closer to the time.

This year we are again using the QPAC online booking site for ticketing. Booking will be open for Year 12 parents towards the end of the month and a week later it will open to all parents. Parents will be given exact dates when they become available. Invited guests will receive their tickets in the post.

Please note that all students will receive their tickets at school and therefore you will not need to book seats for your daughters.

Cyber safety
I’d again like to take this opportunity to remind you of the cyber safety program we have that is available to all 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s families.

The Anglican Schools Commission has engaged Brett Lee from Internet Education and Safety Services (INESS) to develop a series of online courses for parents about cyber safety. 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s strongly supports this training for parents within our school community. This course is a user-friendly and practical resource that will equip parents with information and skills to assist their children to safely navigate the online world.

There are separate, tailored courses for parents with students in:

• Lower Primary (ages 4-8)
• Upper Primary (ages 9-11)
• Lower Secondary (ages 12-14)
• Upper Secondary (ages 15-18)

These courses are free. All of the courses can be accessed using the link and password below:

Please note: The Anglican Schools Commission has entered into a financial agreement with INESS to provide this training to school parents for a period of five years including annual updates. Many questions were raised about the overuse of mobile phones by the girls and the need for some of them to have time away from all of their electronic devices. As a Boarding House, we have rules in place to monitor and teach the girls the appropriate use of their technology and this is also supported by a very rigorous program in the day school.

Monitoring individual use of phones is not possible in a boarding environment and when the girls are not connected to the school wi-fi it is also a very difficult task to know what the girls are viewing. The girls need to use their own data to connect to apps like ‘Snapchat’ and ‘Instagram’ and the only way to prevent them from using social media is for parents not to give the girls a data allowance.

The Boarding House Mobile Phone Policy means that mobile phones are to be used in accordance with Boarding House phone times and are stipulated in the year level routines in the Boarding Handbook. Outlined below are the rules the girls must abide by:

• They are not to be used as alarm clocks
• If phones are used inappropriately, the following consequences apply:
  • First instance – the phone is confiscated overnight
  • Second instance – phone is confiscated for a week (parents informed)
  • Third instance – phone is confiscated for a Term (parents informed)

• If a student’s phone has a camera, and this is used inappropriately and contravenes privacy, the phone is confiscated on the first instance for the Term, and parents will be contacted immediately.
• Mobile phones that have internet access are not able to be monitored by Boarding House Supervisors.
• Mobile phones are not permitted to be used to record conversations with either staff or students without their permission.
• Boarders in the Junior House (Years 6 to 10), will hand their mobile phone to staff from Monday to Thursday at 8:45pm, and these are returned the following morning upon request.

If parents wish to negotiate a different arrangement for their daughter, they will need to contact the  House Mother in charge of that year level. The specific details of this agreement will be discussed between the parent and their daughter before boarding staff will put this in place.

In the end, we hope that with education we can teach the girls the appropriate use of technology, however, this needs to be done in partnership with parents.

Welcome to Term 4 everyone! One of the many joys of working in a school is the consistent opportunity for renewal. Each term is a new start for students and for staff. I have included the words (above) that I finished last term with as for me they are both motivating and soothing. They give a clear message that we can all make progress using what we already have. It is important for students to know that what they need is within them. All learning regardless of context has a common element – it happens in the head of the learner. The most powerful determinant of learning success is the learner. Understanding this is the first step needed for success.

Schools play a role in ensuring that learning is accessible to all students. They do this in a variety of ways. One of the initiatives we are implementing in classrooms this year relates to the language of learning and its accessibility. This term, in every classroom, in every subject, in every year level, we are targeting three cognitive verbs. Our aim is to make sure that our students have a common understanding of what these terms mean and how they are applied in different contexts. The three we are focusing on this term are identifying, analysing and justifying. To ensure that the explanations we provide are consistent we have had posters made for classroom walls. We have explained IDENTIFYING as the process of recognising, locating, choosing or naming, ANALYSING as reading or looking closely, breaking something down or pulling it apart, to create meaning or to understand more deeply and JUSTIFYING as providing evidence to support an answer, a comment or a conclusion. Many of the girls have already been working with these terms but we are broadening the approach for the rest of the year.

Pre-Service Teachers
As a school, 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s is committed to the professional development of their staff. Due to this commitment we also value the opportunity to have Pre-Service teachers in our school to learn from our professional staff. During this term, we have 5 Pre-Service teachers from QUT, 1 from Griffith University and 1 from the University of Queensland completing elements of their education degree through practical experiences in the classroom.

We welcome the following Pre-Service Teachers and thank the supervising teachers who have offered their time and classroom to help develop the teachers of the future:

Nicole Devlin 

We are fortunate enough to be able to have on-going contact with the Sisters through special functions held at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's. Our students look to the Sisters for their example of servant leadership and the care and compassion in which they lead.

Previous student leaders have also served as strong role models to our current student leaders. From those examples and experiences, the current students have an enhanced understanding of leadership. Their personal observation helps them to understand that leadership entails duty, a sense of service, as well as involvement with younger students. As a consequence of watching those who have previously held leadership positions, the 2017 Senior cohort have noted the benefits of leading students in younger year levels. Discussions have highlighted the need to balance study commitments with leadership responsibilities and the demands of having to be a role model ‘all the time’.

Real women in positions of leadership have featured in a number of conversations during the leadership process. It is a pleasure to meet with each of the fine young women who have put themselves forward to be considered for a student leader position in 2018. The interview process allows the interview panel to learn more about the outstanding personal qualities of the students making application for School Captains. These students show such confidence, energy, wisdom, along with other personal qualities, and so providing me with the assurance that there is great capacity in our Year 11 cohort.

Our current student leaders show us that leadership is the ability to bring a group of people together and work toward a common goal. We watch them motivate and guide others, bringing the best qualities out of each person and using their talents for the betterment of the group.

Sony Camp

On the first weekend of the September holidays, Year 11 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and Years 11/12 Churchie students amalgamated to prepare for the annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp. The camp saw 42 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students wholeheartedly dedicate their time to become the primary carers for 10 female intellectually and physically impaired children.

Since 1999, the Sony Camp Program has given Years 11 and 12 students the opportunity to care for a child with special needs over a four-day period, in what is a unique and life-changing experience for all involved. Each camp is provided free of charge for the participants and the majority of the camps run in the September and December school holidays.

The students, supported by a team of dedicated teaching and medical staff, are responsible for the care of these children twenty-four hours a day over the course of the Camp. They quickly learn about the challenges and demands involved in caring for a child with special needs. Not only do the students have an enriching experience, but the children are treated to a weekend full of activities and interactions they would not normally have the opportunity to experience. The Camps also provide much needed respite for parents, siblings and primary carers in what may be their only break for the year.

The eager guests arrived on Saturday morning and their grateful families handed a challenging responsibility over to the students. In return, the parents received beautiful gift packs, which were donated and prepared by the generous 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community. A range of activities were available throughout the camp, including swimming, art activities, a disco and a fair with pony rides and a petting zoo.

Through great acts of devotion, persistence and responsibility, each companion and helper ensured that their guest’s experience was one that they would never forget. When the students relinquished the responsibility of their guest back to the parents, it was clear that the students’ contribution to the camp had made a significant impact on not only the children, but their inspirational parents, many of whom were able to take a well-deserved break. The camp deeply broadens students’ understanding of the realities and complexities of life as they carefully consider the lives of those living with a disability and the impacts this can have on their families.

There were many staff involved in the Sony Camp experience. However, I would like to particularly thank Ms Anderson, who facilitated the camp with the staff from Churchie, Mrs Walker for her assistance and Ms Pallot who oversaw the care of each guest and coordinated the nursing staff. It must also be noted that at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s interested Year 11 students attended lunch time workshops prior to the camp learning how to assist high needs children under the guidance of these staff members. Kudos must go to Mrs Wade for the tremendous contribution she has made to Sony camp over many years. Her work in the area of planning and preparing meals has been an integral part of the camp for a long time.

Nikki Townsend

This program includes participating in an interaction with Konan. Earlier in the year, the girls in these year levels spent time with these students as they shared learning experiences. This interaction began 11 years ago but we officially became sister schools in 2008 after signing an Agreement of International Friendship and Understanding. When Konan visit in 2019, we will sign this agreement again. This trip is an outcome of our relationship with our sister school and weekly Japanese club, which focuses on language and understanding Japanese culture. This trip offers first hand so many learning experiences for the students.

Personally, they learn to live together and be aware of others, manage money and individual responsibility for self and belongings. Educationally, they develop an understanding and tolerance of another culture, one that is similar and one that is significantly different and they become global citizens.

This tour does not happen without extensive planning. Thank you to Miss Surtees whose thorough organisation ensured that the trip was a great success, Mr King and Mrs Emmett for speaking the language and getting us around Japan and Miss Porter who volunteered at very short notice.

As is usual practice, I start the term with an update of all the upcoming events, however, our Primary School Captains, Evangeline Phillips and Isabella Bluett, shared the following summary with the whole school at Assembly this week. So, in turn I would like to share that speech with you:

“Before we get to the end of the term there is so much on.

The Year 6 debaters are keenly preparing their debates. We have a ‘friendly’ competition with St Aidan’s. Our OptiMinds team will compete in the State Finals at the end of Week 2.

This term, Andrews Cup is starting straight up in Week 4. On 23 October, the softball girls will be playing their heart out at Downey Park, we all know your hard work will pay off. Then, artistic gymnastics will compete on 2 November at Somerville House. We will also have girls participating in invitational hockey and basketball competitions.

Orientation day will take place in Week 4 as well, with Year 6 excited to see the senior school! Then, the pre-preps have an orientation morning on 2 November.

The most important event in the Year 3 calendar, is the Year 3 camp. This will take place on 12 and 13 October. Then, rehearsals, rehearsals, rehearsals. Speech night and the Prep – Year 4 celebration is nearing! This is a highlight in the Prep’s calendar, as they are performing their nativity play! The Year 6 cohort will be preparing for their final chapel and morning tea in the last week of this term and then right at the end of this fun filled year, we have activities day!

This year has been filled with serious learning, new possibilities and trying new things. But I think we can all agree that this year isn’t over yet. Girls, do your best, and you will make it to the end of the year.”

Needless to say, it is going to be a very busy race to the end of the term and this will be in unison with the students working alongside their teachers as they focus on achieving their academic learning goals. I look forward to watching the girls participate and flourish as they engage in everything on offer this term.

Selected from more than 2,500 students; nominated by 165 state, private and distance education schools; participants travelled from as far away as Mount Isa and Cairns to represent their schools and work alongside renowned international and national conductors. The students rehearsed together in a variety of ensembles for four days and the program culminated in several concerts given at the Qld Conservatorium of Music. Music Tour 2018

Thank you to all who have registered their expression of interest in next year’s Music Tour to Europe. Interest in the tour has been very strong and further details will be emailed to parents in the very near future.

Combined Churchie Music Afternoon

On Wednesday 11 October, members of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Wind Symphony, Encorah and Stradivari Strings will participate in an informal rehearsal and performance with the members of Churchie’s Music Program in Morris Hall, Anglican Church Grammar School. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the girls to experience performing in a large ensemble setting.

Students will rehearse between 4:00pm and 5:30pm and from 5:30pm, Churchie’s Music Support Group will provide a sausage sizzle dinner for all students. At 6:30pm parents are invited to attend an informal performance in Morris Hall at Churchie, Oaklands Parade, East Brisbane which will conclude at approximately 7:00pm. Music Fest

On Friday 20 October, Wind Ensemble will be competing in Music Fest 2017 to be held at Calamvale Community College Performing Arts, 11 Hamish Street, Calamvale. This is a valuable experience for the girls where they will receive feedback on their performance and have the opportunity to hear similar ensembles from other Brisbane schools. A bus will take the girls to and from Calamvale Community College, leaving 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s at 3:30pm. Wind Ensemble is scheduled to perform at 5:30pm. There will be a presentation soon afterwards and the girls will return by bus to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. It is anticipated they will be back at school by approximately 6:45pm. Queensland Percussive Arts Eisteddfod

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Percussion Ensembles will be performing at the upcoming Queensland Percussive Arts Eisteddfod. Regale Percussion Ensemble will perform on Sunday 15 October at 2pm at Sheldon College, Taylor Rd, Sheldon, and the Elayne Jones Percussion Ensemble will perform on Sunday 22 October at 10.30am at Somerville House, Main Theatre, Graham St, South Brisbane. All are welcome to attend these performances. Please see below letters for further details.

Jane is collaborating with another photographer in offering adults a residential project to experience the process of planning, shooting and post production of surreal photographs. In addition, the exchange students and their families had the opportunity to have one-on-one discussions with past exchange students and parents about their exchange and hosting experiences which gave a great insight into what to expect and prepare for when they commence their own exchange journeys next year. There was an overwhelming turnout and feedback from the evening was very positive. It was great to see the active participation and interaction between everyone.

This year, the South African exchange moved from 2 terms to 3 terms (Terms 2, 3 and 4). We welcome Arabella Clouston and Jodi Sadik who have transitioned well into the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community.

We also welcomed back Sophie Cosgrove and Imogen Morison from their South African exchange. They’ve enjoyed a fantastic exchange and have returned with wonderful memories.

P&F General Meeting

The P&F invites the school community to share their views and ideas at the General Meetings. Our next meeting will be held in the Arts Centre Foyer on Monday 30 October from 6:30 to 8pm.

Old Girls’ Association Annual General Meeting

The OGA AGM will be held on Tuesday 28 November in the Mooloomburram Boardroom from 7:00 to 9:00pm. All past students are warmly welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Students who study an ESP course do not pay tuition fees. ESP students enjoy the associated with being a UQ student, including access to UQ libraries, student services, guest lectures and use of UQ’s extensive sporting facilities. In addition, students who successfully complete ESP will receive one bonus point (1-99 scale) towards their university entrance rank through . Students who later enrol in a relevant UQ program may receive for their completed course.

Eligibility
Students currently completing Year 11 (in the year of application), in all Queensland state and non-government high schools and colleges, including on-shore international students:

• are high academic achievers gaining at least a 'B' cumulative average (or equivalent) during Semester 1, Year 11; and
• can participate in ESP during first semester of Year 12; and
• are confident the extra study will not negatively impact their Year 12 studies; and
• have gained support and permission from their parent/guardian and their school to take on the additional workload.

UQ School of Economics Scholarships
Applications are now open for two invaluable scholarship opportunities at the UQ School of Economics: The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship and the Year 12 Equity and Diversity Scholarship.

The Year 12 Domestic Australian Scholarship is for outstanding Australian domestic students who are completing Year 12 studies. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year for three years. Applications close 3 November 2017.

The Year 12 Equity and Diversity is for students who can demonstrate a very keen interest in economics, but who have faced educational disadvantage during high school. The successful candidate will receive a $5,000 bursary each year plus a mentoring scheme.
