There will be time to formally and appropriately farewell Ms Bolton and Mrs Edwards later at the end of the year. Mrs Edwards and Ms Bolton will leave us with our good wishes and our thanks as these inspiring educators have left a legacy for the school, particularly through their work on the professional growth of staff and the school’s teaching and learning program.

The school will advertise nationally this weekend and will work to find candidates of a similar calibre to fill their roles. In the meantime, we say congratulations to Ms Bolton and Mrs Edwards.  

Congratulations also to all girls who have been appointed to positions of formal leadership in the secondary school and, in particular, to our two School Captains for 2018, Annabel Garland and Xanthe Lowe-Brown. At the student assembly on Wednesday, I acknowledged the fine leadership of our current Year 12 students, particularly our current School Captains, Hannah Lane and Charlotte Traves, and thanked them for their service to the school community.

Also, in my address to the assembly, I spoke about leadership behaviours and competencies.

In my address, I encouraged ‘all student leaders in 2018 to aim to demonstrate self-awareness, self-management, versatility and adaptability; to aspire to excellence, to manage relationships well, communicate with meaning, and through your actions and words, inspire trust. This is what a responsible leader does and this is how you become a role model for all students in how to behave and treat everyone.

I reminded our students that ‘Leadership is both a privilege and a responsibility’.

‘Leadership is not about a badge or a title; it represents a decision to serve others, be a positive role model and enthusiastically engage in all aspects of school life.

In accepting a leadership position, a student is making a commitment to live the mission and values of the School in both their words and actions.’

This year we will again be booking tickets for Speech Night online through the QPAC booking system.

Bookings are now open for Year 12 parents only, and these families would have received an email this week with the details of how to make their booking.

Tickets for all other year levels will open on 2 November.

Your daughters will receive their tickets at school (they will not be sitting with you) and therefore you do not need to book seats for them.

This year there is the added option of print@home which will make it much easier for families to access their tickets. Of course, families are still able to choose the option of QPAC box office collection; however, please be aware that the box office is a busy place just prior to the event so you may wish to opt for print@home.

We look forward to seeing many students and families at our annual Speech Night and Prize Giving Ceremony.

Saturday 4 November is a night for all the family with a lantern parade, food and stalls for Christmas shopping. The Primary Chorale will also be singing at this event!

Primary Ichthus Camp, Boys and Girls in Grades 4-7 in 2018! 10-13 January 2018

Primary Ichthus is a four-day, three-night residential camp during the January school holidays. It is an exciting holiday experience that challenges young people to step outside their comfort zones through participation in group and individual activities. Primary Ichthus also gives the participants opportunities to form and strengthen new and existing friendships and to spend time in group discussion. All of this takes place in a safe Christian community that encourages participants to meet the God who challenges us to step out and live a life of faith in Jesus.

Ichthus camps have been around since 2002. Many of the leaders on these camps grew up attending them. The word Ichthus comes from Koine Greek, where it means ‘fish’. In Koine Greek, it is also an acronym for “Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Saviour”.

When is Primary Ichthus?

Primary Ichthus 2018 starts at 2pm on Wednesday 10 January and ends at 11am on Saturday 13 January after our family service at 10am, which parents, families and friends of the campers are welcome to attend.

Where is Primary Ichthus?

Primary Ichthus is at Mudjimba, a campsite on the Sunshine Coast.

What is the cost?

The total cost to attend Primary Ichthus 2018 is $199. This cost is subject to change closer to the date of camp. Registration closes at 5pm on 17 December 2017. We are unable to process registrations after this date due to strict catering deadlines.

Who can attend the camp?

Anyone in Grades 4, 5, 6 or 7 in 2018.

What can participants expect to experience?

This year, we will be taking advantage of being on the Sunshine Coast to include a wide range of activities including beach games, puzzles, archery, ropes courses, raft building, real-life Cluedo and much, much more. A key aspect of the camp is the worship and small group time, giving the participants a chance to discuss and reflect with other participants their own age on what the Spiritual Director’s talks mean to them.

One clear focus was on the role that women play in agriculture and recognising the significant contribution that women play in this area. The youth awards that were presented also showcased the amazing work that young women in these areas are achieving. They are leading the way for future generations to recognise that distance is not a barrier to success.

As a Boarding community, it is important that we acknowledge the contribution of women in rural and remote areas and celebrate their achievements. Whilst in Emerald, I was able to enjoy a day with the Kirkwood family at Disney Station. This provided me with a wonderful opportunity to catch up with Jane and Laura who were past boarders at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. Jane is in the final stage of completing her degree as an agronomist and Laura, after having a year at home working, will attend university next year. I would like to thank Tim, Alison, Jane and Laura for taking the time to show me around their property.

Chris Rider, the CEO of the QCAA and other senior staff spoke about the benefits of the changes for students and their parents. These can be categorised in terms of:

• greater comparability of results between schools
• reduced summative assessment load
• better evidence to determine fair subject results
• transparent and easy to understand method for the calculation of subject results
• reinvigorated curriculum
• focus on twenty-first century skills

In the current Queensland system, there are Authority subjects (contribute to an OP), Authority Registered subjects (attain QCE credit but do not contribute to an OP) and Vocational qualifications. To attain an OP students are required to complete 20 semester credits of Authority subjects. Twelve of these credits must come from three subjects studied for four semesters. To be OP eligible students are also required to sit the QCS examination in Term 3 of Year 12. This exam is used to scale students’ school subject results. It is these scaled scores which are the basis of their OPs. Presently, vocational qualifications at a Certificate III level or higher attain a separate tertiary entrance rank, as do high level qualifications (AMEB/Trinity College etc.) in Music, Dance and Speech and Drama. These qualifications (vocational and AMEB etc.) do not contribute to an OP at all.

In the new Queensland system there will General subjects, Applied subjects and Vocational qualifications. There will be two methods of calculating an ATAR. A student may choose to study 5 general subjects to attain an ATAR or to study 4 general subjects plus an applied subject or a vocational qualification. This is a significant difference because it will be possible for a student to have a vocational qualification contribute to an ATAR. Vocational qualifications will not provide a separate rank which can be used for tertiary entrance, although QTAC has indicated that they will remain a medium for admission to University. The details surrounding this are yet to be provided although it is expected that this will be at the discretion of each institution. The other change relating to ATARs is that to be eligible for an ATAR a student must pass an English subject. Currently while a pass in English is a requirement for admission to most post-secondary courses it is not a requirement for an OP.

Another major difference in the new system is that there will no longer be a State-wide exam, such as the QCS test, which is used to scale internal school results. Each subject result will be expressed in terms of a percentage, calculated by adding the four pieces of assessment completed in that subject in Year 12. The external piece will not be used to scale the internal pieces. In fact, in 36 out of the 46 General subjects the external assessment will be 25% of the final grade, contributing the same as each of the three internal pieces. In the ten Maths and Science subjects the external exam will be 50% of the final subject grade. The scaling that will exist in the new system will be inter-subject scaling. That means that some subjects will be worth more than other subjects in terms of ATAR calculation. The easiest way to explain this is to say that 75% in General Maths (like Maths A) will not contribute the same to an ATAR as 75% in Mathematical Methods (like Maths B) or Specialist Maths (like Maths C). Details regarding how subjects will scale will not be available until 2020 the first year of the new ATAR system. This is because scaling will be based on how the students achieve in a subject relative to other subjects. As we receive more information regarding this we will provide you with a deeper understanding of the implications for your daughters.

Advice regarding which subjects students should choose in their senior years remains the same. That is that girls should choose subjects that:

• they enjoy
• they have some success in or believe they can develop in
• provide them with a balanced course of learning
• meet the pre-requisites for tertiary study that are relevant to them

Each week in this newsletter I will write something about the new QCE system so that over time parents and girls begin to feel a level of comfort regarding what Year 11/12 will look like in 2019/2020.

This year, the timetable was arranged so that students (Years 3 – 6) had the opportunity to work with many different teachers. Our planning for the new year also includes recruiting staff; we are currently in this process.

After Orientation Day, the teachers begin the process for class lists for 2018. In the upcoming weeks during pastoral care lessons, each girl in Years 2 – 5 will complete a friendship sociogram. The teachers will use this information to construct class lists for 2018. The teachers value this information as it allows girls to think about friends who they can work with in a classroom setting.

The process for the development of class lists is as follows:

1. Each student completes a sociogram sheet. Students record 4 friends, 2 from each class (if two classes). Students are allocated at least one friend. All students also record names of new students they know.
2. Teachers record friends’ names on class master sheet.
3. Teachers review sociograms (based on social behaviour and academics) and creates Form classes ensuring there is a balance between the classes.
4. Class teachers discuss with specialist teachers and Learning Enhancement.
5. Parent applications are considered.
6. Class teacher creates list.
7. Parents are informed of the class and teacher of their daughter for 2018, at the beginning of the Christmas holidays.

If you would like to provide information about your child that you believe would be valuable for teachers when creating classes, please complete the attached form (PDF 337.1KB) and return it to Alex Kemp in the Primary Office by Monday 6 November 2017. Unfortunately, no late forms can be accepted beyond this date as teachers will create new class lists on Wednesday 8 November and changes will impact on all class arrangements.

Whilst all applications will be considered, it is important to note that the submission does not provide a guarantee that your application will be granted. These applications, along with the professional judgement of the Primary staff and sociograms from the students, will be used to inform our decisions about class placement for 2018.

Year 6 Final Term

As we look towards 2018, the girls in Year 6 are finalising their final term in the Primary School. Many activities are planned for the upcoming weeks, with one of the traditions already shared with the school. Over the years, the parents of Year 6 have always offered a goodbye gift. In 2014, two year levels left the Primary school. The Year 7 cohort’s parting gift was the vertical garden and the Year 6 gift was the Primary Captain’s honour board. The playground clock was donated in 2015 and last year, the popcorn machine was donated. Similarly, the Year 6 gift has already arrived and is in pride of place in the playground.

On Thursday, the Friendship Leader, Gabrielle Butcher, and on behalf of the other leader, Eliahna Smeath presented the gift to the school.

“Every year, the Year 6 girls donate a gift to the Primary school. We have had the vertical garden in 2014, the outdoor clock in 2015 and the popcorn machine in 2016. We began using the popcorn machine as soon as it was received – a very welcome gift, indeed. This year, the Year 6 cohort has already donated its gift. You may have even seen it already – it is the buddy bench on Churchill Lawn. As your Friendship Leaders, we invite you to use it. You might like to have a rest – sit on the bench! You might like to read a book – sit on the bench! You might like to watch people play – sit on the bench! You might see someone sitting on the bench – go and have a chat. You might make a new friend. Just sit on the bench!

If you see someone on the buddy bench, go over and talk with them, invite them to sit with you or even to play with you. This is a wonderful chance for big and little Primary girls to help each other.”

This is a wonderful gift which encourages friendship and it has been wonderful to watch the girls enjoying the outdoors as they sit and talk with each other! I would like to thank the parents of Year 6 for their kind donation and this bench will always serve as a reminder of the friendly Year 6, 2017 cohort.

Sport Results

On Sunday, the gymnastics team competed in the Megan Mitchell Shield which is a lead-up event to Andrews Cup Gymnastics. The team competed against Clayfield College and St Hilda’s. Megan Mitchell Shield is run by Delta Gymnastics and started in 2002.

Our 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s team won the shield achieving overall first place. This is only the third time with 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s having won it in 2002 and 2004. Congratulations to the girls on their fabulous results:

Queensland Sporting Representatives

Recently, Lani McWilliam and Milla Roberts competed in the State Track and Field Carnival. Congratulations to both these girls on their amazing results. Lani was placed first in 11 years 800m and Milla Roberts placed first in 10 Years Tetra at State Athletics. Lani and Milla have now made the Queensland Athletics Team and will be competing in December at Nationals in Adelaide. We wish them all the best.

St Mark’s Anglican Church - Primary Chorale Performance

Primary Chorale has been invited to perform at the Lantern Parade and Family Evening at St Mark’s Anglican Church (corner of Bonney Avenue and Bellevue Terrace, Clayfield) on Saturday 4 November. This is a wonderful opportunity for our girls to perform in the local community. Girls are asked to arrive at 5:15pm for a 5:45pm performance. All are welcome to attend!

Music Dinner

The Music Dinner will be held on Friday 10 November, 6-9:30pm in Eton Hall. The Annual Music Dinner is an occasion where students and parents celebrate the culmination of a wonderful year of music at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. This year’s theme is ‘Disney’. Congratulations to Annette Chan (Year 7) who achieved 3rd place in the Quota Beenleigh City of Logan Annual Eisteddfod in July. Annette performed a contemporary marimba piece in the Open age section for instrumental solo of a 20th century piece. Well done Annette!

Weekly exchange meetings continue during lunch time on Tuesdays between 1:15pm and 1:45pm. This week, we had a very interactive meeting where travel tips were discussed at length for each exchange destination.

Hello Ms Achari

Just wanted to touch base and update you on our time on exchange, so here is a recap of our time so far at Emma Willard. When we arrived in Troy we were immediately welcomed and made to feel so at home by all the Emma Willard girls. Making our way around the school was quite a challenge at first, especially considering all the buildings look the same and a key-card is needed to get inside. So there were numerous occasions where in that first week I would be waiting outside the door of the building lingering until someone opened the door. But once we were given our own schedules and key-cards, we already felt like a true Emma girl.

That first weekend I went with the school to the local mall, where I got lost in a Forever 21 store as it was so large, I literally could not find the check-out nor the exit. I think I was in there for an hour and a half. The South African exchange girls, Georgia and Tayana, and I then went on to shop at our first American supermarket, which did not disappoint. Never in my life have I seen so many types of Oreos and Ramen Noodles, and for only 99c!

Charlotte spent her first Saturday at the Troy Markets with her exchange family, where she had her American crepe, which was reportedly amazing. She then spent that night touring through a haunted corn maze with her exchange family, as well as cruising on a hay ride. A perfect way to get into the American Halloween spirit. That Sunday, Charlotte and I both went to downtown Troy to experience the annual Troy Chowder Fest, where Charlotte had no chowder and I had a spoonful of a carrot and kale chowder, which apparently doesn’t count as chowder. We did however explore downtown Troy and visit numerous boutiques and quaint little cafes.

That next week was our first week of school where things ran very smoothly considering. We were beginning to participate in all our classes, and whilst they were very different to the classes we are used to, we have found them a fun challenge and something we can really get into. Such as intro to drawing, which in no way am I an artist, but I have found that diving in and giving it a go has been something that has made the class very enjoyable.

Charlotte and I are absolutely loving this experience so far and cannot wait for many more trips we will go on. Emma Willard has been amazing and we are still speechless looking at breathtaking grounds. I think the view is one we will probably never get used to.

All students wishing to hire a church dress must have a ‘Hire form’ completed and signed by a parent/guardian at the time of hiring. These forms are available on the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s website or from the Supplies Shop. There is a $100 deposit at time of hire with a $70 refund when the church dress is returned as per conditions on hire form. A late return may result in a late fee after Monday 20 November.

Bond University - Student for a Semester applications now open for January 2018 semester
Participants of the Bond University Student for a Semester Program gain a distinct advantage over their peers by completing a tertiary subject and getting a true experience of university life, before they leave high school. Student for a Semester participants receive a Student Mentor to guide them through their studies, and students who successfully pass their subject may also be eligible to receive credit towards their Bond University undergraduate degree. New Psychometric Testing as an entry requirement to the Bond Medical Program
The top 500 eligible applicants will be invited to complete a compulsory online psychometric assessment. Applicants will be required to pay a fee to sit the test. The results will identify 250 applicants who will be shortlisted and invited to attend an interview to gain selection into the Medical Program.

UQ School of Economics Scholarships

QUT For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
QUT’s Oodgeroo Unit offers the entry pathway from mid-October for QTAC applicants who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and place QUT within their top three preferences. Applicants need to have their from a and as this process can take time, we recommend students and/or their parents start this process early.

QTAC Information about the ATAR system
From 2020, the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) will replace the Overall Position (OP) as the standard pathway to tertiary study for Queensland Year 12s. The ATAR is the primary mechanism used nationally for tertiary admissions and indicates a student’s position relative to other students.

The ATAR will be introduced for students commencing Year 11 in 2019, who will graduate from the end of 2020 and seek entry to tertiary courses from 2021. QTAC will calculate ATARs for Queensland school leavers. QTAC have produced a video with information about some of the changes that will take place. This is available at: .

QTAC:Selection guidelines for initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers)
As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), all applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both .
