These are wonderful, celebratory events focused on the Year 12s and this important milestone in their lives. It is a time of appreciation – from the staff who have enjoyed teaching them and from the students for the quality of their education and the relationships that have been formed.

At the Year 12 Final Assembly I took the last opportunity to give the students three pieces of advice.

1. You cannot entirely control the events in your life, what you can control, however, is what things mean to you.
   I found this interesting because it is slightly different to the usual advice – which is ‘You cannot control what happens to you, you can only control your reaction to it.’ There is a really important distinction here: you can only control what things mean to you. Meaning or the sense of what we make of the world, can only be driven by perspectives. If these perspectives have been shaped in some way by our 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s School’s values then I think the students have a solid foundation.
2. Rather than pursuing your passions or dreams, pursue who you are.
   I encouraged the girls to discover what makes them really do what they do - to find something inside of themselves, that no matter what changes on the surface, this part does not change, it is the part that you come back to you, the part that guides you to make the right decisions, the part that makes you fulfilled.
   I suggested that the School’s demonstration of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s values in action has had an influence here, in helping to shape who they are.
3. Adversity, failure, disappointment, disillusionment will happen – but these times should cause you to dig inside to discover more of yourself, to use the real capacity of you as a human being; those traits that only expand when you are really challenged.
   Always being safe and avoiding the uncertainty of life can limit the shape and quality of our lives – and not for the better.
   Despite all the subject lessons, all the assessment, the extra-curricular – it is perhaps the lessons the school has provided about the school values which are the most important.

In the words of Patrick Overton, from his book of poems, The Leaning Tree. 

“When you come to the edge of all the light you know,
And are about to step off into the darkness of the unknown,
Faith is knowing one of two things will happen:
There will be something solid to stand on,
Or you have been taught how to fly.” (Patrick Overton, The Leaning Tree)

With this verse, I encouraged our Year 12 students to remember our school motto, Per Volar Sunata (Born to Fly Upwards).

I wish all Year 12s well for the future – in the short term, a safe ‘schoolies’ experience, a restorative holiday and joy on receiving their OP and QTAC offers; in the longer term, a life lived well with much to celebrate. I hope they see the value in remaining connected to their School and enjoy their new status as ‘Old Girls’.

There were many key messages from our wonderful speakers on the evening, but I’d like to pick up just one of those messages in my article this week.

Our guest speaker spoke of the 10 things that she wished she knew as a student. One of those things was that it is okay to fail.

As adults, it can be hard to sit back and let our children fail, without stepping in to stop this from happening. As parents we find it hard, and as teachers we also find it hard.

However, I read something recently that really resonated with me and helped to put this into perspective.

“It’s hard enough for adults to sit back and let children make decisions. It’s even harder to sit back when you are sure that what they are about to do is a mistake or likely to fail. Yet this is what you must do… It’s okay to let them skin their knees, but not break their necks. If the decision they are about to make represents a real danger, then you should obviously step in. But if it’s not dangerous, step back. It’s okay to give a warning or offer advice – but if they aren’t listening or interested in your opinion, don’t push it.” (Appleman, 2011)

Children (and adults) young and old learn lessons every single day. These lessons are learnt through experience, so we need to let our children experience the good as well as the challenging times. The main message though is even in those challenging times there is always a lesson to be learnt. It can be as simple as “well I’m not doing that again” to “next time I do that I will do that differently”. Yes, of course, it is acceptable to help our students when they need it, but recognising when they just need to navigate their way through a challenge themselves can be hard but necessary.

As we come to the end of the year, it is a great time for our students to reflect on the experiences they had and what they learnt from them, what they would do again, and what they would do differently.

To our Seniors of 2017, I wish you all the very best and know you will take the lessons learnt here at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's and apply them to what the future brings.

As we nudge our seniors into the post-school world, amidst the harsh realities of life itself, amongst it all there are glorious moments of joy and reflection … and hope.

Our young people are the future but they are also the ‘now’. Optimism, faith, hope, compassion, tolerance and understanding are all elements of a strong and courageous life. Parents and teachers are called to nurture such things in the hearts of the young. Thus, we may send them forth into the world in peace, as peacemakers.

A few years ago, I shared the following with the departing seniors. The simplicities of our younger days can remind us of childhood wisdom:

“Everything I need to know I learnt in Kindergarten…”

• share everything
• play fair
• don’t hit people
• put things back where you found them
• clean up your own mess
• don’t take things that aren’t yours
• say sorry when you hurt somebody
• wash your hands before you eat
• flush
• warm cookies and cold milk are good for you
• live a balanced life – learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some
• take a nap every afternoon
• when you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together

To each one of our departing Seniors, may God bless you and keep you, May God make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you, the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you his peace.

The Year 11 boarders performed a beautiful song, ‘Little Wonders’ by Rob Thomas, to bid the seniors farewell. This showed the girls have formed beautiful bonds over the years, living side by side.

Our Head of Boarding, Lesa Fowler, delivered some timely and emotional comments about this wonderful group that we have had the significant privilege to watch grow and who we will truly miss. One thing that was truly highlighted was the strong sisterhood, embraced whole-heartedly by everyone.

This clever reference to the difficulties life can involve and the resilience required to live successfully reminds us of the importance of holistic education. As an educator I am acutely aware of the responsibility of developing resilience in students. As a parent, I am aware of how difficult that task can be when my children are confronted by disappointments and challenges.  Building resilience is one of the most important tasks we have as both teachers and parents.

Andrew Fuller is a clinical psychologist, author and a Fellow of the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Learning and Educational Development at the University of Melbourne. He has done a significant amount of work relating to the promotion of resilience in children and adolescents. His website () is a wonderful source of ideas relating to this and other topics connected with the well-being of young people. Fuller describes resilience as “the fine art of being able to bungy jump through life”. He provides hints regarding the development of resilience. I have chosen three of these to include below.

1. Promote belonging - resilience is promoted by a sense of belonging. Children are most resilient when they have three types of belonging: a sense of being part of a family; having different friendships to belong to; having an adult outside their family who connects with them.

    

2. Have some mooch time - we live in a world that suffers from attention deficit disorder. We rush children from activity to activity, from lesson to lesson and from one organised event to another. Then we wonder why, when there is a lull that they say “I’m bored”. Be a counter-revolutionary. Find some time each week just to be at home without anything structured happening.

    

3. It is clear who is in charge - Families do not work well as democracies. In fact they seem to work best as benevolent dictatorships in which the parent or parents consult a lot with their children but at the end of the day, the parent has the final say. Some parents fear that if they take charge that they will lose the friendship of their children, but often the reverse is true. In families where parents fail to take their own role seriously, children may feel that to express their independence they need to engage in risk taking behaviour and avoid responsibility. Authoritative parenting allows children to feel safe, have clear boundaries and flourish.

The first thing I know is study is a skill and it can be taught and it needs to be practiced; or, as I explained to my Year 7 Science of Learning class last week, you cannot expect to make it into the Olympic team if you start training a week out from the competition. Training in a sport or practice for an instrument and study are the same, you need to commit to the plan to develop good study habits.

Below are some tips to help develop good study habits:

1. Spaced Practice
   Space out your studying over time. Far too many students wait until the night before a test to study for it. It is important to front load, do a bit each night over the weeks leading up to the exam. Create a studying calendar to plan how to review for the exam.
2. Retrieval Process
   Practice bringing information to mind without the help of materials. Many people think of “studying” as simply re-reading notes, textbooks, or other materials. But having the information right in front of us doesn’t force us to retrieve it from memory; instead, it allows us to trick ourselves into thinking we know something. Recalling information without supporting materials helps us learn it much more effectively.
3. Elaboration
   Explain and describe ideas with many details. This method asks students to go beyond simple recall of information and start making connections within the content. Students should ask themselves open-ended questions about the material, answer in as much detail as possible, then check the materials to make sure their understanding is correct.
4. Interleaving
   Switch between ideas while you study. Common knowledge tells us that to learn a skill, we should practice it over and over again. While repetition is vital, research says we will actually learn that skill more effectively if we mix our practice of it with other skills. This is known as interleaving.
5. Dual Coding
   Combine words and visuals. When information is presented to us, it is often accompanied by some kind of visual: an image, a chart or graph, or a graphic organiser. When studying, pay attention to those visuals and link them to the text by explaining what they mean in their own words. Then, students can create their own visuals of the concepts they are learning. This process reinforces the concepts in the brain through two different paths, making it easier to retrieve later.

One more piece of advice on how to maximise these strategies for learning:

Combine them - these strategies don’t necessarily work in isolation. You can space out your retrieval practice, and when doing retrieval practice, try to recall concrete examples, elaborate, or sketch out a concept. When doing retrieval practice, you can interleave between different concepts.

As part of our final Year 12 assembly this week, it was an honour to announce the 2017 recipients of the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Awards; Hilary McKie and Susanna Lehman. The awards are presented to students each year in many Australian Secondary Schools, in remembrance of the soldiers who died at the then South Vietnamese Village of Long Tan in 1968.

The students are selected based on the following attributes:

• Leadership
• Teamwork
• Cooperation
• Resourcefulness
• High Personal Values
• Problem Solving
• Communication Skills
• Involvement in Community

During the assembly, a number of students were awarded with a Diploma of Business or Project Management. This is an outstanding achievement for these girls and they are commended on their effort and accomplishment. These courses, which have been offered are ‘in house’ at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and facilitated by outside providers.

Finally, the term finishes on Thursday 30 November at 3pm and students will be engaged in learning and assessment until this date. We strongly urge parents to resist requests from their daughters to depart early. If an early departure is unavoidable due to extenuating circumstances, please advise the school in writing, as early as possible.

The Prep teacher is Kylie Briggs who has taught a variety of year levels for the past years at Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School. The Year 2 teacher is Briar Bracey and comes from teaching at Holy Family Primary School at Indooroopilly. The Year 5 teacher is well known to the students; Marguerite Erasmus, has spent the past two years relief teaching and fulfilling contract positions at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. The Year 6 teacher is Kimberley Bachmann who joins us from The Gap State School and will also work as a literacy coach for the Years 5 and 6 cluster. We look forward to welcoming these staff officially in the new year and students and parents will have the opportunity to meet all staff at the drop-in Monday 22 January before the first day of school.

Coding in Schools

In 2015, I visited schools in England and at this time, the subject of coding in schools was at the forefront of educational discussions and implementation planning. The idea of coding in schools has also been on the radar of Australian education since that time. There has also been a push by the business sector to include coding in the school curriculum with many businesses supporting coding programs.

This term, we made a decision to offer coding to our Prep and Year 1 students. This program was developed and is offered by specialist educators. The benefits of participating in a coding program are numerous and include an understanding of technology; developing skills for life; the development of problem solving; and, support of mathematical skills.

Through participating in coding programs, students can become acquainted with the basics of coding, that is computer programming, to gain an understanding of how the devices that play a large role in modern life actually work. A knowledge of coding will also have long term benefits as it will eventually contribute to the economic competitiveness of our country because of the availability of qualified workers. Coding is highly creative, it contributes to a person’s problem solving ability and equips students for a world changed by technology.

More immediately, the Prep and Year 1 students are developing hand-eye coordination, sequencing and developing an ‘algebraic’ language of programming. On Monday, the coding teacher reported, “we are constantly astounded by the progress of children at such a young age who are following our program; hearing a 6-year-old child explain the concept of an algorithm and sequence is something that melts our hearts as we know that what they are learning now will be so vitally important for their future”. I certainly agree as I watched the Prep girls engage in the program with a level of sophistication.

We have been so impressed by the outcomes for these students that we will be offering holiday coding programs during vacation care. In the first week of holidays, a full week of coding will be offered – a one day camp on Friday 1 December and a two-hour daily program for the following week. Be sure to look out for information in the coming weeks as I am sure places will fill quickly.

Speech Night

Thank you and congratulations to all music students on presenting so many wonderful music performances at Speech Night last Tuesday evening. These performances always provide a lovely counterpoint to the speeches and prize presentations. Thank you also to the conductors who prepared the girls in the lead up to the event. This is always a special event involving many parts of the local Racecourse Rd community. Congratulations to Monique Dodd who recently auditioned to participate in the Queensland Youth Orchestra. Monique has successfully been placed into the third bass position of the Queensland Youth Orchestra 2 for 2018. This is a wonderful achievement and I know that her involvement in this orchestra will be a rewarding experience.

Our 2017 Captains, Eliza McKendry and Annabelle Kennedy, also gave a lovely farewell speech acknowledging their peers and the Art staff. Thank you girls, you will be missed.

The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Parents and Friends Association has established a strong tradition of giving back to the school through its social and fundraising activities.

The P&F is comprised of an active group of parents within the school. QTAC:Selection guidelines for initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers)
As part of the Australian Institute for Teaching and Leadership (AITSL) revised Standards and Procedures (2015), all applicants to initial teacher education courses (pre-service teachers) must satisfy both .
