80.6% (87 out of the 108 Year 12 completers in 2020) completed the survey. Of those, 88.5% continued in some recognised form of education and training. The most common study destination was bachelor degree. A further 9.2% transitioned directly into paid employment and no further study. There were 2.3% of respondents not in the labour force, education or training.

The Year 12 completers from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's continued in education or training in 2021 in the following areas of study:

I am just following up on an earlier newsletter in which I wrote about the concerns about young people and vaping. The Lung Foundation Australia (LFA) has launched a campaign, , to inform young people, parents and educators about the dangers of vaping. From 1 October 2021 it will be for Australians to access e-cigarette products containing nicotine without a prescription. In theory, this should effectively put an end to adolescents’ access to nicotine-based e-cigarettes. However, commissioned by LFA found 100 per cent were inaccurately labelled and 20 per cent contained undeclared nicotine. A range of other substances toxic to humans was also detected.

The 124^th Speech Night and Prize Giving Ceremony (12 October 2021) is fast approaching and excitement is building as students anticipate the end of the year and all that it brings.

This year we will again be booking tickets for Speech Night online through QPAC booking system.  Please note that due to COVID restrictions, our venue QPAC is only able to have 75% audience capacity. In order to reduce our audience capacity, we now only require prize winners and all Year 12 students to attend the evening. Year 12 Graduation and Special Awards Ceremony

Parents of Year 12 graduates, and parents of students in years 5 – 11 who are receiving awards at this Special Awards Ceremony are invited to attend this event. Last term I talked about the need to be flexible as we respond to the constant changes we have faced during this pandemic and always watching the QLD government announcements for the latest restrictions. As with everywhere in the school it is a very busy term here in the Boarding House with many significant events, particularly for Year 12. Celebrating Graduation next week prior to knuckling down for External Exams will be a very emotional time for the Seniors. Even though the Seniors don’t officially depart the Boarding House until the end their of External Exams, the Boarding House Dinner planned on Monday night will give us all the opportunity to say goodbye to these lovely young women and also give them the opportunity to farewell their extended family of “Sisters”.

After next week they officially step down from their roles as Seniors leaving the Year 11’s to step up into their Leadership positions and start their journey of leading the Boarding House.

We wish all our Boarding Seniors the best of luck with their busy schedule and know that the have the full support of the Boarding House over this very busy time.

Determination of Honours Awards

Honours awards are given for excellent academic achievement based on results from Terms 1, 2 and 3 of a given year. In Years 7-10, students who achieve a Grade Point Average of 13 or above with no overall result lower than a B, will receive an Honours award. These awards are calculated using the results of all subjects which are studied for three or more lessons a week. In Year 7 where some subjects are studied on a rotational basis, only those subjects studied in the first rotation are used in the calculation of these awards. In Year 8, the Arts subjects that are studied for 2 lessons a week are included in the calculation for Honours Awards. In Year 11 and 12, Honours awards are based on the grades awarded using the provisional subject results for the internal summative assessments in each subject. The Year 11 and 12 Honours are calculated using the results of the students’ top 5 subjects.

Determination of Commendation Awards

Year 7

Commendation awards are given in recognition of excellent engagement in learning. They are based on the level of application demonstrated in class and at home, as well as the attitude displayed in all contexts. The Attitude to Learning result is recorded on the report card. In Year 7, these awards are calculated using the results of all subjects (except Science of Learning). To receive a Commendation Award a student needs to receive an average score of 4.5 or higher over Terms 1, 2 and 3. Students who receive an Honours award are not eligible for a Commendation award

Year 8-12

Determination of Year 10 Subject Prizes

A subject prize is awarded to a Year 10 student who receives the highest subject result based on three terms of work. If more than one student receives the highest subject result the decision is made by the Head of Faculty in consultation with the year level teachers to review the collection of assessment and make a judgement based on the quality of the assessment folio to deem who should receive the prize. To receive a subject prize all assessments must be completed.

Determination of Internal Year 12 Subject Prizes

A Year 12 Internal Assessment Subject Prize is awarded at Speech Night to the student who receives the highest provisional subject result based on the internal assessments. Note that percentage results are used in determining these awards for the Maths and Science Subjects. If more than one student receives the highest internal subject result from Unit 3 and 4, the cumulative result from Unit 1 and 2 in that subject will be used to determine the prize winner. To receive a subject prize all internal assessments must be completed.

Determination of the Internal Assessment Dux of the School and the Proxime Accessit to the Dux of the School

The Internal Assessment Dux of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Anglican Girls School will be awarded at Speech Night. This award is presented to the student in Year 12 who has attained the highest internal assessment subject results across 5 subjects. The Proxime Accessit to the Dux of the School is awarded to the student who has attained the next highest internal assessment subject results in that Year 12 cohort. The determination of these awards is based on students’ subject results at the completion of the summative internal assessment period for Unit 3 and 4. This subject result will be calculated by adding together the three internal assessment results for 5 subject results. To be considered for the awards, students must complete all three assessments for five subjects. Subjects are not weighted. In order to distinguish candidates for the final award results from Unit 1 and 2 may be considered. If it is not possible to distinguish between two students both shall be awarded the Internal Assessment Dux or Proxime Accessit to the Dux prize. The decision as to the Internal Assessment Dux and the Proxime Accessit to the Dux of the School shall remain confidential until the presentation at Speech Night.

For students attending these sessions after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the Senior Library is open until 5:00pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Dates for the final term of 2021 Supervised Study Sessions are below (please note that bookings open the first day of each term):

Term 4:

11 October - 18 November (except for 12 October due to Speech Night and 28 October due to the moved RNA holiday)

To book, parents will need to log into Flexischools and select ‘Supervised Study Sessions’. Bookings are limited to 25 participants each night and when a session is full no further bookings can be made. Bookings are essential and should be made in advance (and prior to 9:00am on the booking day SSS is required) to ensure a place is available. If dinner is required, payment must be paid at the time of booking and this option selected in Flexischools.

During these sessions, girls work with supervisors to organise a plan of study for the term. This involves looking at their assessment calendar and planning how to ensure they are prepared for their next lesson and assessment. The main goal of SSS is to assist students to revise work covered so far and support and extend their understanding of learning from lessons so they are prepared for assessment. It is important that students arrive on time and check in with the supervisors to get their name marked off and then sign out when they are collected by their parents. Please note that Year 12 students are not permitted to use the Study Centre for Supervised Study Sessions.

SONY CAMP

On the first weekend of the September holidays, Year 11 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and Year 11/12 Churchie students amalgamated to prepare for the annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp. The camp saw 21 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students wholeheartedly dedicate their time to become the primary carers for approximately thirteen female guests intellectually and physically impaired children. The school also provided 6 helpers who prepared and served food and cleaned up over the 3 days for over 100 people.

Since 1999, the Camp Program has given Year 11 students the opportunity to care for a child with special needs over a three-day period in what is a unique and life-changing experience for all involved. Each camp is provided free of charge for the participants and the majority of the camps run in the September and December school holidays.

The students, supported by a team of dedicated teaching and medical staff, are responsible for the care of these children during the days over the course of the Camp. They quickly learn about the challenges and demands involved in caring for a child with special needs. Not only do the students have an enriching experience, but the children are treated to a weekend full of activities and interactions they would not normally have the opportunity to experience. The Camps also provide much needed respite for parents, siblings and primary carers in what may be their only break of the year.

The eager guests arrived on Saturday morning and their grateful families handed a challenging responsibility over to the students. In return, the parents received beautiful gift packs, which were donated and prepared by the generous 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community. A range of activities were available throughout the camp, including; swimming, art activities, karaoke and a trip to Australia Zoo.

Through great acts of devotion, persistence and responsibility, each companion and helper ensured that their guest’s experience was one that they would never forget. When the students relinquished the responsibility of their guest back to the parents, it was clear that the students’ contribution to the camp had made a significant impact on not only the children, but their inspirational parents, many of whom were able to take a well-deserved break. The camp deeply broadens students’ understanding of the realities and complexities of life as they carefully consider the lives of those living with a disability and the impacts this can have on their families. It must also be noted that our 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Year 11 students attended lunch time workshops prior to the camp learning how to assist high needs children under the guidance of these staff members.

There were many staff involved in the Sony Camp experience. I would also like to particularly thank Ms Anderson, who facilitated the camp with the staff from Churchie, Ms Bloomer for her assistance and Ms Pallot oversaw the care of each guest and coordinated the nursing staff. I would also like to thank Josie Gracey, Reggi Ali, Claudia Mazzotta and Tom Smithers who also helped supervise over the weekend.

Prep students retell the birth of Christ through performance and song. The Year 1 and 2 students provide an angelic choir. Each student will cross the stage and receive a book as acknowledgement of their school year.

Year 3 – Celebration of Achievement - 16 November at 9:00am

Students share their key learning experiences and perform with their string instrument. The students are presented with their Key to Success Certificate that identifies their learning achievements.

Year 4 – Celebration of Achievement -16 November at 11:00am

Students share their key learning experiences and perform with their string instrument. The students are presented with their Key to Success Certificate that identifies their learning achievements.

Year 5 – Celebration of Leadership Journey - 17 November at 8:45am

Each class will share an aspect of their leadership journey. They will also showcase musical skills developed as part of the Year 5 band program.

Year 6 – Final Chapel Service and Morning Tea - 23 November at 8:30am

This service celebrates the journey of our Year 6 students so far, as they move to the Secondary School. Parents are invited to attend the Service with the girls, followed by morning tea. Students will present a performance outlining highlights of their Primary Years at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s.

In the upcoming weeks, I will share each year level service-learning project. There is an air of excitement in the Primary School as the hours are counted down to Arts Spectacular. Good luck to the Year 5 and 6 girls for tomorrow.

Congratulations to AHEP/SHEP students

Congratulations to Taylah Murphy (Yr 12) and Hilary Davis (Yr 9) who participated this year in the Australian Honours Ensemble Program (AHEP) over the recent school holidays. Hosted and organised by the Queensland Conservatorium, this event brings together the finest young secondary school musicians from around the country during the September school holidays to rehearse and perform together with renowned international and national conductors. The State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) was also to be held during the recent holidays; however, due to COVID restrictions was unable to proceed.  Congratulations to the following students who were accepted into the program and were intending to participate: Anna Bridge (Yr 11), Annette Chan (Yr 11), Arkie Edwards (Yr 10), Sofie Gustafsson (Yr 10), Brianna Higgins (Yr 9), Emi McBride (Yr 11).

QGSSSA Athletics Wrap Up

On the final day of Term 3, the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Athletics team ran, jumped and threw to the best of their ability at the QGSSSA Athletics Championships. There were some amazing individual achievements and plenty of personal bests throughout the day which resulted in the team being 20 points in front of BSHS, an athletics powerhouse, prior to going into the relays. The team managed to hold their group with some terrific change overs and an outstanding win in the 17 Years and Over A Division Relay team consisting of Ryanne Coe, Tyla Proctor, Rory Owen and Caroline Williams to place 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s to an equal best placing of 3^rd overall in the aggregate Stephen’s Cup and 2^nd in the Del Mellefont Percentage Cup.

Sports Awards Evening – Friday 8 October

We look forward to welcoming all awardees, families, and any interested students to the Sports Awards evening on Friday 8 October. This event provides an opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of so many girls and celebrate the immense contribution individuals and teams have made throughout the year to the sporting program.

The guest speaker for the evening is Bronwen Knox, a four-time Olympian, dual Olympic bronze medallist and Australia’s highest capped female Water Polo player. Outside of the sporting arena she has completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Laws and has a Graduate Diploma in Public Health. Professional Women’s Network

Our fourth Professional Women's Network Breakfast will be hosted on Wednesday 20 October in Term 4 with special guest speaker, Ruth Drinkwater. Ruth has had a diverse career with more than 20 years’ experience in management, business development, marketing and commercialisation, investment in emerging technology companies and capital raising.

She has been at the forefront of change in Angel investment and start-up activity. As an experienced non-executive Director, Ruth has sat on several Boards and Advisory Panels. She is currently Chair of Alkira Software Pty Ltd and Mrs Clucks Pty Ltd and a past CEO of Alkira Software, as well a past Director of several other quasi-Government, university and private company Boards. She is a co-founder of Mrs Clucks, continues as a member of the Queensland Government’s Advance Queensland grant assessment committee and is a long-term member of Brisbane Angels.

QUT Mathematics Summer School

Year 11 student interested in mathematics are inviting to attend a four-day mathematics summer school, from 17 - 20 January 2022. Through a series of lectures and computer practicals taught by staff from QUT’s School of Mathematical Sciences, you will explore mathematics concepts and examples relevant to real-world applications. It will cost $90 to the Summer School which includes all morning teas, lunches and afternoon teas. SAE FlickerUp Schools & Youth competition 2022

SAE FlickerUp 2022 competition in partnership with SAE Creative Media Institute is an Australian Youth & Schools Competition which screens at Flickerfest. It is open to films from students enrolled in primary or secondary schools in Australia, or individuals under 18. This competition is divided into 2 sections: one for primary age & one for secondary age youth/students with films under 35mins. The competition is now open and closes on 5 November 2021.
