A tremendous amount of building and refurbishment work occurred over the holidays and I hope the students enjoy some of the up-graded areas in the school. In addition to upgrading staff facilities and parking areas and painting throughout the school, the following were also completed:

• updating secondary amenities in Avoca Ground and West Wing
• creating a new area of School Support on the larger lower floor Toorak veranda
• refurbishment of several classrooms, including converting E201 to a science lab
• expanding the primary toilets near Churchill Lawn
• repurposing the original primary toilets into a teaching space
• improving the flooring throughout common areas in the school
• updating the IT office and reception area
• creating a new classroom below the Arts Centre Foyer and two classrooms on Circular Drive.

I look forward to seeing you at the parent information evenings in the first week of face-to-face school and please do not forget the P&F AGM and Welcome Drinks on Monday 14 February in the Arts Centre Foyer at 6.30pm. The P&F welcomes all parents to attend and to become involved at whatever level they can manage given work and family constraints.

On the POD in the year level sections all parents are able to access our COVID-19 risk management plan. As we are given more information about the return to school, we will ensure we update this plan. Our Principal will also continue to communicate to the school community on any health directives relating to the return to school.

We are proudly an Anglican school with our traditions being built upon the ethos and philosophy of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent. The Sisters began our school in 1895. The Sisters’ mission was to provide education and empowerment to women and children who faced disadvantage. This core value runs through the DNA of our school. We care about the world and all who are in it.

We are a spiritual community that holds regular worship services which your child will attend. We have a beautiful chapel, 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Chapel, within our school grounds. There are opportunities for families to attend special services throughout the year. Next week, I will send a schedule of special Chapel services and events that will be held over Terms 1 and 2, including First Communion, Holy Baptism and Confirmation.

The beauty of boarding is its immersive nature as the girls not only learn with each other in class, but from each other in the boarding house. Our staff provide outstanding support, guiding the girls and helping them to grow intellectually, socially, and emotionally. The girls share their daily lives together, bringing their own strengths, talents, and points of view, and respecting each other’s differences. Boarding is an inclusive and supportive living and learning environment where the girls gain a greater understanding of themselves, others, and the world.  

We look forward to the girls returning to boarding as the boarding house becomes a vibrant, challenging, and caring environment where the girls feel part of the community.  The relationship between the boarding house staff and parents is integral to the girls' success. Working in partnership with parents is vital to ensuring that the best possible care is given to everyone. The key to this is communication, and at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s we pride ourselves on developing authentic relationships with all families.

While the girls are enjoying some extra time at home, we encourage them to engage in their online learning and continue to communicate with each other and the staff. All the boarding staff are looking forward to welcoming the girls back to boarding in the coming weeks.

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s staff have shown themselves to be adaptable and creative with their approaches to online learning. In the lessons I have seen so far this week, students have completed scavenger hunts in breakout groups on Teams, collages in English, strength workouts in PE and collected data from around their homes. While we are looking forward to seeing everyone in person, I think it’s safe to say that it’s been a positive start to Term 1. If your daughter does have any concerns about her online learning experience, I encourage her to speak to her class teacher, Academic Advisor or Head of Year.

Assessment Planners – Years 11 and 12

Years 11 and 12 students will be able to access a 12-month Assessment Planner on their Year Level POD page from early next week. All assignments and exams for Terms 1 to 4 are recorded so your daughters can begin to plan their study schedules. Effective study habits rely on your daughter’s capacity to prioritise her academic progress and allocate sufficient time for homework and study. Your daughter will have met with her Academic Advisor this week and started reflecting on her progress last year, goals for this semester and appropriate strategies for reaching them. Regular check-ins with her Academic Advisor can help to keep her on track and motivated, so we encourage all students to engage fully in this process.

Over the past week, important information has been placed on the POD by the Studies and Academics Office regarding the operation of Maggies Connect in the Secondary School. I encourage all girls to read this material and refer to the Frequently Asked Questions document if they remain unsure of any procedures or expectations.

Finally, I would like to assure parents that our teachers are very aware of the fact that we have many new girls starting at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s this year, for whom the Maggies Connect experience is an entirely new one. Staff will be contactable through email and the Microsoft Teams application, and I encourage girls to reach out to their subject teachers, Form Teachers/Academic Advisors, or Heads of Year when they are experiencing issues with their remote learning. We’re all here to help you!

Supervised Study Sessions

Supervised Study Sessions (SSS) will recommence in Week 3 of this term. It will operate out of the Eunice Resource Centre (Senior Library) on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. Each session runs from 5:00 pm to 7:30 pm, with students having the option of purchasing dinner from the boarding house for $10.

The purpose of these sessions is to provide girls with a quiet and well-resourced space that is conducive to productive homework and study time. Each SSS will be staffed by up to two tutors, who offer advice and guidance on how to plan effectively for upcoming assessments. The SSS tutor group is made up of ten young women who are currently studying at university.

For students attending SSS after an afternoon of sport, transport is available to and from Windsor Park. For those staying on after school to attend SSS, the Eunice Centre is open until 5pm prior to the commencement of the study sessions.

Parents who book their daughters in via Flexischools can feel comfortable knowing that their daughters are receiving academic support but are also interacting with peers in a physically and emotionally safe environment.

2022 Supervised Study Sessions

Please note the following conditions:

1. The booking cut off through Flexischools is 9:00am on the day. This enables us to plan and advise the kitchen on the number of meals that will need to be catered for in the evening. Please note, that we can only accept a maximum number of 25 students, so therefore, we recommend you book well in advance to avoid missing out.
2. For bookings that miss the cut off, no dinner can be provided but students are welcome to attend SSS provided the maximum number of students has not been reached. An email notifying the school of their attendance is necessary, and this will be noted on the supervisor’s roll.
3. Dinner will be provided at the set time of 6:00pm to allow for the boarders’ dinner sittings to be finalised.
4. SSS students will occupy the first two tables located on the right-hand side upon entering the Dining Hall.Strict sanitising and social distancing will need to be adhered to.Supervisors have been briefed in this regard.

We understand that each girl walking through the gates on 7 February, whether a returning student or a fresh face to the school, will have her own story and her own needs. With the assistance of our experienced and well-qualified staff, we will endeavour to assist you daughters settle into 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s for 2022 as best we can.

Each girl in the secondary school is allocated a Form Teacher (Years 7 & 8) or an Academic Advisor (Years 9 & 10), who will have face-to-face contact with your daughter most days. There is also a Head of Year assigned to each cohort of girls, who will work closely with the Form Teacher and Academic Advisor to oversee student wellbeing. Along with these key people, a number of other staff may be of assistance to your daughter; namely the Heads of Faculty, Dean of Studies (Years 7 to 9), Dean of Academics (Years 10 to 12), Student Counsellor, the Chaplain and myself.

I encourage parents to keep the lines of communication open with your daughters as to her schooling experience. Usually, we say that no news is good news, but sometimes no news can mean something is bothering a student and she may not know the best way to deal with it. Each year can present new challenges, socially and academically, and often these challenges are unexpected.  All of the staff can be reached by telephone or email, and I encourage you to contact the school if you have any concerns about your daughter throughout the year.

The ease in which this has happened is because of teacher preparation. The teachers spent last week preparing learning programs for take home packs and online learning so that each child could start their school year with enthusiasm and interest for learning. Thank you to the teachers for their tireless work to ensure week one started smoothly.  I have, like parents and students, appreciated each teacher’s effort. As one parent shared, “The take home packs, Maggies Connect content, the clarity of instructions, the check in phone calls from staff and the smiles on the faces of everyone at the drive-through take home pack and laptop collection were flawless.”

Thank you also to everyone for helping new members of our school community with their transition. This year we have welcomed 140 new students as well a a new teacher to each year level excluding Year 2. When not planning, the teachers have been working to create stunning learning environments including renovated learning spaces. I know the students will enjoy learning in them when they physically return to school on 7 February.  

Please don’t forget to access the Primary Parent Handbook a useful source of information available on the POD. All new parents will receive a hard copy from the class teacher on Friday 4 February at the book drop in (check class POD page for details). Please don’t forget to also bring in a lunchbox and drink bottle to donate to children in need (Zephyr Education Inc). I would encourage parents to use the POD constantly as a source of information and ensure that you set notifications for any groups that your daughter is involved in. Please refer to the  to assist you in setting up the school App. The POD and school App work together, and we recommend you have both accessible. Importantly, to receive information regarding the activities and extra-curricular groups your child is involved in, you will need to request to “join” those groups. At present, this concerns primary and secondary swimming, as they are currently training. You are welcome to “join” the other sports and activities too and familiarise yourself with the information on the pages in preparation for those sports commencing in 2022.

I look forward to meeting parents at our Parent Information Night on Wednesday 9 February. Please check the POD for details about the evening. In the upcoming weeks, I will also meet with the new students at morning teas. This is an opportunity for each of us to get to know each other. As the term progresses, I will also host year level new parent morning teas as a way for new parents to meet each other and to meet the class parent representatives. For class parent representatives to work with families in their year level, they request that you forward your contact details to them. The list of year level representatives can be found in the Parent Handbook tile on the POD (page 65) and also by .

Whilst it has been an unusual start to the year, I am sure it will be a successful year. I thank parents in anticipation of support and contribution and please do not hesitate to contact me regarding any aspect of your child’s education.

Some of these include the Music Day Camp, Classics in the Cathedral, the MAYO Festival, the Anglican Schools Music Festival at QPAC, inter-school ensemble workshops and several recitals at which students may gain solo performance experience.

All parents who have daughters involved in the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Program are encouraged to join this page, along with Strings, Band and Choral pages and their relevant ensemble pages, dependent upon your daughter’s involvement.

Our 2022 Music Captains, Ella Woods and Eva Matyear, put together a special 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Couch Choir performance of Walking on Sunshine to welcome everyone back to the school year. It’s a wonderful performance involving many students and staff and I encourage everyone to jump onto the POD and check it out!

PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS AND ENSEMBLE REHEARSALS

Private music lessons and ensemble rehearsals will be commencing from Week 2. Private music teachers will be in contact with parents and students prior to Week 2 to provide information regarding the delivery of lessons. Some lessons will be able to be given online during Week 2, while some will begin on campus in Week 3, dependent on the individual teachers’ circumstances. For students involved in music ensembles, parents and students are asked to check their respective ensemble POD pages on which information will be provided as to how rehearsals will occur in Week 2. Some ensembles will have an online rehearsal via Microsoft Teams, while others may ask students to complete some preparatory exercises in readiness for Week 3.

We very much look forward to seeing students online during the first two weeks of school and then welcoming everyone back to the school campus from Week 3!

MUSIC DAY CAMP

Our biennial Music Camp had been scheduled for the weekend of February 18-20; however, due to the current COVID situation in Queensland, we have decided instead to run a Music Day Camp to be held on the school campus on Saturday 19 February 9:00am – 4:00pm. Students involved in the following Secondary Music Ensembles will be asked to attend: Stradivari Strings, Chamber Strings, Jackson Wind Ensemble, Sister Helen Wind Symphony, Volare and Exultate. The focus of the Day Camp will be two-fold: the day will be an opportunity for students to spend time rehearsing new repertoire in preparation for performances on Open Day, and it will also allow students to further build friendships with others across the Music Program. Further information will be made available to students and parents soon.

MUSIC STAFF NEWS

There have been some staff changes over the holidays. Ms Evelyn Stephan and Ms Patricia Rogers have resigned over the course of the school holidays. Both Ms Stephan and Ms Rogers have made a wonderful contribution to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Program and we wish them all the very best in their future endeavours.

We welcome some new staff to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Program for 2022. Welcome to Ms Jessica Bell, who will teach upper strings. Ms Bell is an Old Girl of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and is excited to be returning to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community. She comes with a wealth of performing and teaching experience, most recently having been concertmaster for the musical Hamilton in Sydney. We also welcome back Ms Elena Katahanas, who will take on the role of upper brass teacher. Ms Katahanas taught at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s some years ago but has recently been heading up the Band Program at St Andrew’s Anglican College on the Sunshine Coast. It will be wonderful having Ms Katahanas back as part of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s music team! We are also in the process of recruiting a new singing teacher and will look forward to introducing the new teacher to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community soon.

STATE HONOURS ENSEMBLE PROGRAM

The State Honours Ensemble Program is a fantastic program organised by the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University that invites young people to come together and share their passion for making music. Congratulations to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students who were involved in both the primary and secondary SHEP programs that occurred at the end of Term 4 2021. The students participated in an intensive two days of music-making, concluding with finale concerts in the Conservatorium Theatre, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University at South Bank.

MUSIC SUPPORT GROUP

The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Support Group is a committee of dedicated parents who meet regularly to support the girls who participate in the school’s Music Program. The Music Support Group organises and assists with refreshments at school concerts and fundraises to purchase a range of instruments/equipment to enhance the department’s resources. The first meeting for 2022 will be Tuesday 22 February at 5.00pm in M’s Café. Parents from both the primary and secondary schools are welcome to attend.

In any given new year, we are excited by the challenge of new goals and opportunities that lie ahead. We hope that these challenges will be positive in nature and inspire us to work hard and push the limits of our potential. However, challenges are not always positive; some are harder than others, and it often comes down to the choices that we make in our approach as to whether we learn and grow, or struggle to progress. Recently, watching the hit TV show Ted Lasso, an American Football coach who tries his hand at coaching Premier League English Football, a quote by Coach Ted stood out to me that defined the importance of decision making: It’s our choices that show who we truly are, far more than our abilities.

Already in 2022, we have faced the challenge of remote learning and a delayed start to our school sport preparation. The simple choice may be to put off starting our physical preparation, hitting the snooze button in the morning, or turning on Netflix after that last class at the end of the school day. However, that choice rests with us. The potential to tap into our self-motivation, to go for a run, complete a home workout or practise our respective sport skills in the backyard with a friend or family member, is a choice that rests with each of us. Our Sports Captains, Amelia Butler-Wood and Kate Bloomfield, have already challenged us all to stay sporty and active across this time. I encourage all students to keep an active routine across these two weeks. The independent choices we make will be the ones that set us in the best stead for our sporting goals and opportunities that lie ahead.     

Remote Learning Period

Across the remote learning period students can access a number of resources through the POD to assist their sport preparation:

• Strength & Conditioning @ Home – Strength & Conditioning sessions are taking place online for all students on a Monday & Wednesday afternoon.
  • Years 7,8 & 9 3.30-4.30pm
  • Years 10,11,12 4.30-5.30pm

• STM Fit Club – The STM Fit Club POD page provides some great resources regarding programs that can be completed from home.
• Seasonal sports are also providing useful resources on their POD pages to help guide students’ training from home.

Sport Registration

All girls have the opportunity to experience this unique sporting culture by registering their intention to participate for one or more sports on offer in Terms 1 and 2. Trials for sports will be dispersed across Weeks 3 and 4, with information being available on individual Sport POD pages. The sports currently available for registration for Terms 1 and 2 are listed below:

District and Regional Sport Information

A POD page specifically designated to representative sport is now accessible. Previously the Metropolitan North Secondary School Sport POD page was accessed through Secondary Sport. Please note that the Met North POD page is now an independent page for registration. If members already have access to this page, please ensure that you modify settings to ensure you receive notifications when news items and nominations for trials are released. New members, please ensure your settings allow you to receive notifications via phone and/or email.

Representative sport opportunities are occurring over the next four weeks and it is very important for those wishing to trial to be aware of the nomination time frames. There are some changes to the nomination process this year which will be provided on the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Met North POD page shortly. The following sports are currently upcoming for nominations:

• Swimming 10-12 Years and 13-19 Years

2022 Professional Women’s Network

Our Professional Women’s Network events program for 2022 has been confirmed!

PWN 1 will be hosted on Tuesday 15^th March with guest speaker Genevieve Gregor (’86). Genevieve is a Founding Partner of Colinton Capital Partners, a mid-market private equity firm investing in Australian growth companies. Prior to this, Genevieve was the co-head and Managing Director of the Asia Special Situations Group in Australia for Goldman Sachs for eight years. Genevieve has had over 25 years’ experience working in banking and finance. She has completed numerous major financing transactions for the Australian corporate market over her career and been involved in a number of high-profile investments.

ROMA PICNIC RACES WEEKEND: LAST WEEKEND of MARCH 2022

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s parent Jenny Slatter is encouraging 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s parents to get together at Roma for their Picnic Race Weekend.

For those 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's parents interested in heading to Roma for the Roma Race Weekend, which involves the Roma Ball on the evening of Friday 25 March 2022 and the Roma Picnic Races during the day on Saturday 26 March 2022, she is hoping someone may be able to recommend a milliner or a jeweller and a leather worker who can design and make:

a) a hat/jacket pin or a brooch or similar in 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's colours (brown, navy and white) for the Maggies Mums to wear to the Roma Race weekend events; and

b)a hat band or belt or similar in 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's colours (brown, navy and white for the Maggies Dads to wear to the Roma Race Weekend events.

Ideally, these clever talented designers and artisans will be ex-students, relatives of current students or have some link to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's and/or Roma or rural / regional Queensland.
