To allow the long weekend to occur, Friday the 31st of May is a student free day. Staff will spend the day in professional learning at school.

Last week saw our second Professional Women’s Network event for the year. Peter and Penny Wolff shared secrets about how they started their successful businesses in the coffee industry, with many messages including “don’t be afraid of hard work”. Their generosity in giving back to the industry and the people in the countries that supply their coffee was also noted, and the audience was treated to a coffee tasting as well.

Our next Professional Women’s Breakfast is on 20 August, where we are excited to welcome our guest speaker Julieanne Alroe, one of only a handful of women in the world to run a privatised airport, having retired as CEO and Managing Director from Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC) in June 2018 after 10 years in the role. The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way is underpinned by our school values and asks us to show qualities of appreciation, alignment and accountability, and positivity and gratitude.

Each day next week, we as a community, will be celebrating one aspect of the Way. On Monday the focus will be on everything we appreciate. On Tuesday we will be encouraged to think about how we can become more aligned to school values and be accountable for our actions, and on Wednesday, we will focus on positivity and gratitude. This week is not just for the students, but for the whole community; staff, parents and students.

To do this, the Prefects will be launching the Ribbon Effect. Each day around the school, there will be areas where you can write a message on a coloured ribbon, matching the focus of the day. These ribbons will then be tied to the fence near the red letterbox. And by the end of the week we will have a display which will quite literally, ‘show us the way’.

This will all culminate with 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way Week celebrations on Thursday 30 May on Circular Drive. Students will be treated to a free sausage sizzle, live music and chalk art.

Positivity and gratitude have an immense impact on emotional wellbeing and can create an environment where we all can flourish. That’s why the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way invites us as individuals to consider the attitude and feelings we bring to school each day. We encourage you all to get involved and make The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way apart of your everyday lives.

In the Boarding House the girls develop their independence, grit and self-control. Because of the environment in which they live they are often more mature, open minded and culturally aware. They learn the skills of collaboration and are challenged and motivated to do their best.

The girls are also taught to be mindful of themselves, of the needs of others, of the world around them and the ethos which pervades every aspect of Boarding. They develop a ‘can do’ approach and become very resilient. We endeavour to show the girls how to handle success with humility, defeat and disappointment with resilience, develop individual talent alongside team spirit and camaraderie. All of these these lessons are about building their character.

On Friday, the Year 10s will be asked to complete an online survey by Monday 3 June to identify the 5 or 6 subjects they are thinking about selecting for Year 11 2020. This information will inform the 2020 timetable and the subjects we will offer. Staffing and resource constraints oblige us to remove those subjects which are not sufficiently supported by student selection. The students’ final subject selection will follow the Information Evening on Friday 5 August.

During this process many families begin asking questions about the calculation of the ATAR at the end of Year 12. To help you understand, we have invited QTAC to present at our free Trends in Education Seminar on Wednesday 5 June to talk about the ATAR calculation process and pathways to university. All parents with daughters in Years 5 to 12 can access results and feedback on assessments completed by their daughter. Currently all assessment information and due dates for Years 5 to 12 is available in Parent Lounge. By logging into Parent Lounge parents are able to view assessment details and results from Term 1.

End of Semester 1 Reports
End of Semester reports will be available on Parent Lounge by 5pm on Friday 28 June. Each student’s report will consist of a comment from her Head of Year, as well as information for each subject. The final page of the report shows the Grade Point Average (GPA) graph which records the student’s overall level of achievement and tracks this from semester to semester.

Round 2 Parent Teacher Interviews
The second session of Parent Teacher Interviews for 2019 will be held on Monday 15 July from 10:00am-8:00pm. These interviews are scheduled to allow you to meet with all classroom teachers following the Semester 1 Report.

Bookings for Parent Teacher Interviews will be facilitated in Parent Lounge and more information will be provided in Week 7.

World Vision Youth Conference
The World Vision Youth Conference is a platform for young minds to come together to build their social awareness and learn how their actions can help put a stop to global injustice. The Conference unites thousands of students from across Australia every year and gives them the opportunity to channel their potential for leadership. The Youth Conference empowers students to act and inspire others to stand up for young people experiencing injustice and inequality – and be leaders of global change.

Gender Summit
On Tuesday 21 May we travelled to Churchie to participate in the annual Gender Summit. The day focused on the theme of ‘A more gender equitable Australia’ and was facilitated by staff from the One Woman Project. Through the summit we learnt to look critically at messages in the media which can reinforce gender stereotypes. A highlight was hearing from Pip Harvey Ross (’10), a Maggie’s Old Girl, as a member of the panel discussion. The day provided us with renewed appreciation for the educational opportunities we are fortunate to receive. We enjoyed meeting new people and learning strategies to challenge gender inequality, especially unconscious bias in our everyday life. Thanks to Churchie for hosting such a worthwhile event.

This year’s theme is “Celebrating the Diversity of Languages within the Home, Culture and Community”. Our Pre-Prep – Year 2 students participated in a range of fun and educational activities, including watching a performance of ‘Where in the World is Mr Chicken?’ by students from the Australian Catholic University. They also shared in a yarning circle and completed a number of different activities focussed around diversity.

As part of this week of celebration the Pre-Prep - Year 4 students took part in the National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) on Wednesday 22 May at 11:00am. NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read aloud, simultaneously, in schools, libraries, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. The students were delighted by some of our Primary staff’s creative abilities in re-enacting the story of, ‘Alpacas with Maracas’. The purpose of this event is to highlight the value of reading and literacy. It is an engaging and interactive way to model to our students the enjoyment and pleasure reading can bring. Thank you to Mrs Jackson, Ms Brennan, Miss Richards and Mr Box for their involvement.

Thank you also to all teachers and teacher aids for their organisation and planning in ensuring a successful and engaging Under 8s Week.

Boarder Musicians’ Concert
Congratulations to the Boarder musicians who performed at a concert held in the Arts Centre Foyer on Monday evening. A great variety of repertoire was presented and on many different instruments. Thank you to all girls who performed!

Thank you to Akari Komoto for her music contribution to the Girls Got Heart charity function held last Friday at Riverside Receptions in New Farm. This was a special event to raise money for medical services provided to women in rural communities. Her performance was greatly appreciated by all in attendance.

Encorah/Exultate Music Tour 2020 – France/Belgium
A meeting was held last Thursday evening to discuss the proposed 2020 Music Tour to France and Belgium during the June/July holidays. The provisional cost for the tour is $6,200 and is inclusive of flights, accommodation, tour guide, chartered bus, the majority of meals and all costs associated with the World Choir Games. A draft itinerary and letter with further details is attached below. The tour is open to all students currently in Years 8-11. The Music Department is currently seeking deposits of $750 for students to secure a place on the tour. Deposit payments are required by Friday 14 June and can be made via Flexischools: . The deposit is fully refundable if insufficient numbers sign up for the tour.

The next Music Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 4 June at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

Autumn Fixtures
On Friday 17 May, teams in Touch Football and Soccer played against Clayfield College. Our Intermediate Soccer team was successful, winning 9-0. Our Touch Football teams recorded 7 wins out of 7 games, with the Open team having the biggest win of the round, recording a 12-0 victory. Special mention must go to the Year 8A team and the 7B team who are currently on top of the table. Our Basketball girls are back in action this Friday against St Aidan’s and are looking to continue their good form.

Autumn fixtures are in the final two weeks with the majority of games being held on Thursday 30 May due to the Day/Boarder weekend. Please check each individual POD page for game times.

Athletics
The Athletics season got off to a great start with over 100 girls having run, jumped and thrown during the first week of training. To view the Athletics training schedule, please click here (PDF 83.6KB).

To complement the Athletic training sessions, strength and conditioning by our resident exercise physiologist, Dane Larsen from Aspire Fitness will be held every Monday and Wednesday. Please see the Activities Office for further information.

Winter Fixtures

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Tennis Open Championships
On Friday 7 and Sunday 9 June the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Tennis Open Championships will be held at Churchie Tennis Centre. The Championship is conducted in the following divisions:

Primary: Years 4 – 6
Junior: Years 7 – 8
Intermediate: Years 9 and 10
Senior: Years 11 and 12

The Boarders’ Cup will also be contested. This tournament is open to all girls and is not restricted to students playing QGSSSA. Registrations are to be made through the Tennis POD page and will close by Monday 3 June.

Cocktails on the Creek
168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Rowing celebrated 30 years on the weekend at the annual Cocktails on the Creek, held at Sci-Fleet Toyota Albion. Tony Elliot was on hand to share the story of how 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Rowing and the Brisbane School Girls Rowing Association (BSRA) came together. Tony’s wife Kay was also in support as they celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary on the same night. Sally Kehoe ('03) was the guest speaker and told of her story from humble beginnings; learning to row at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s to representing Australia at 3 Olympics Games.

There were numerous raffles and silent auction items up for grabs, with the main event of the evening being the live auction of a restored vintage rowing oar.

Thank you to all those who attended and contributed to the success of the evening. Special thanks goes to the event organiser, Nicole Gerber.

Portia Creevey (Year 7) who was selected in the 10-12 Years Metropolitan North Netball team and will contest the State Seconday Schools Netball Championships in Bundaberg on the 20-23 June.
