168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø

In addition to the Patron being announced and interviewed by Year 11 students, in the afternoon, we have the traditional 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Run – which starts in Circular Drive.  Each year we outline the theme of year at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Day. This year it is ‘Embracing Joy’.

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Day celebrations are also followed by our whole weekend dedicated to the reunions of Old Girls from prior to 1962, 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992, 2002, 2012 and an Old Girls’ Chapel on Sunday. This year we are expecting just short of 400 Old Girls.

Below is information about the previous recipients of the role of Patron for your interest.

SISTER DOROTHY (2002)

Sister Dorothy was the ‘longest serving’ of the Sisters (professed in 1945). Although Sister Dorothy was not ever designated officially as patron, she was recognised for her service at the inaugural 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Day in 2002.

PHYL DREW (2003)

Phyl Drew was Prefect and Bede House Captain in 1933. She joined the Old Girls’ Association in 1934 and was President of that organisation. She was also the Old Girls’ representative on School Council from 1987 to 2007 and Patron of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's Foundation 2004.

JACK DALE (2004)

Jack Dale was the voluntary school photographer for over 20 years from about 1977 until 2005. He always attended Interhouse events, QGSSSA fixtures and school events to take photos for the school. He had a particular interest in sports photos. His photos have been used in many 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's publications and advertising. We are very grateful for the visual record he made of school life over the years.

MOTHER EUNICE (2005)

Mother Eunice was Reverend Mother for over 25 years. She was also a member of School Council for approximately 30 years from mid-1982 until 2012. As the Mother of the SSA, Mother Eunice had a great impact on the school, and this was recognised when we named the Eunice Science and Resource Centre.

PHIL HARRIS (2006)

Phil Harris was a Member of the School Advisory Committee (later School Council) from its establishment in 1981 and was Chair of Council 1987 – April 2001. His association with the school began in 1971 when his daughter, Sally, enrolled. He was President of the P&F in 1979 and 1980.

DAWN REES (2007)

Dawn Rees was a student from 1932 to 1944. She was School Captain, Dux and OGA Prize Winner in 1944. She was a member of staff from 1948 to 1990 and is remembered for her inspirational French teaching and production of school musicals. She was also on School Council from 1991 to 1995 and is now an alumni volunteer.

SHEENA DYASON (2008)

Sheena Dyason was a student from 1948 to 1951 and Sports Mistress/Coordinator of Physical Education from 1956 to 1998. She introduced lifesaving to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and had a long association with Queensland Royal Lifesaving,

JACQUIE NOYES (2009)

Jacquie Noyes was the Drama teacher from 1980 to 2001. Jacqui demonstrated her commitment to the school by arranging flowers for Chapel services and special events long after she retired as a member of staff.

RAY GEISE (2010)

Ray Geise was another longstanding member of staff. He established the TOC H group at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's and was also very involved with the Duke of Edinburgh program. His wife Sheila was a past student and staff member and his daughter, Nicky, a 1980 Senior. Mr Geise has published a book on the contribution of the Sisters to education in Queensland and the SSA schools.

LORRAINE GIBSON (2011)

Lorraine taught at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s from 1967 until 1992. Lorraine commenced teaching Mathematics and Science at the school, became Head of the Science Department and is best remembered as an innovative teacher of Physics and Year 12 administrator. Upon Lorraine’s retirement, the Old Girls’ Association bestowed life membership on her for support, service and contributions to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. Lorraine was the initiator of the Past Staff Association which continues to meet and funds Speech Night awards for students in both the primary and secondary school.

TONY ELLIOTT (2012)

Tony Elliott is well known for his long association with the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Rowing Program and his success as a First VIII coach. In July 1989, he essentially introduced rowing to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and in 1990, Tony led a group involving representatives from Somerville House and BSHS, in the formal structuring of the schoolgirls racing season. The inaugural Brisbane Schoolgirls Head of the River was held on the 13 October 1990. Tony, along with representatives of other schools, is credited with the formation of the Brisbane Schoolgirls Rowing Association (BSRA) in 1991.

BEVERLY FOX (2013)

Bev Fox began teaching at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s in 1980 and retired in 2012. During her teaching years, she was a classroom teacher, Head of the Business Education Department and Year Level Supervisor. In her other roles, she was Fundraising Manager for the Arts Centre, the first Director of Development (included Foundation, Fundraising, Old Girls’ Association and Alumni) and Alumni Coordinator. She was also a Director of the Foundation for approximately 7.5 years. Bev introduced the massive reunion weekend which is now a traditional part of the school calendar. Also, it was during her time as Year Level Supervisor that the Sony Camp experience for senior students was introduced into the school. Bev retains her connection to the school as a weekly volunteer in the Alumni office. 

AMANDA STEIN (2014)

Amanda Stein has been a very generous supporter and promoter of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, particularly through her business Panda Pearls Australia and her presence at rural shows.  Amanda first attended 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's as a 12-year-old boarder in 1982; her family were then living on Bougainville Island in PNG. She was soon joined by two sisters who followed in their mother’s (Wendy Wippell) and aunt’s footsteps. Amanda has never forgotten the lessons she learned at school about supporting others in need. She is a wonderful role model to all our students for her willingness to take risks, work ethic, generosity to others and her love for her school.

LIBBY BLACK (2015)

Libby Black has been a most conscientious supporter of the school, particularly as a tireless worker in the Old Girls’ Association. As she was known then, Libby Stanley was a student at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s from 1963 – 1968. In her final year of school, she was Prefect and Bede House Captain. In 1998, Libby returned to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s to be a member of the Old Girls’ Association executive. There she stayed for 16 years until stepping down in 2014. During this time, she had also served as president of the executive from 2002 – 2005 and 2012 – 2014 and was treasurer from 1998 – 2000. Libby had a particular interest in preserving the school archives, and during her presidency, she promoted the Old Girls’ Association Overseas Study Scholarship and led the project to publish information about 25 Notable Past students. Libby also enrolled her daughter in the school (2001 – 2007).

ANNABELLE CHAPLAIN (2016)

Annabelle has been a very generous supporter and promoter of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, particularly in her role as Chair of School Council, from 2011 to 2014, inaugural chair of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Foundation, and as a parent and past student and now as a member and Chair of the SSA Trust. Her long history with the school started when her family moved from Mt Isa to Brisbane where she became a student at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s with her two older sisters in 1966. She returned to the school as a parent of two daughters, who graduated in 2002 and 2005. When she was at school, she was a Prefect and Lawson House Captain (holding this latter position twice, once in the secondary school and once in the primary school), and an avid tennis player.

Students in Year 7 will shortly receive a notification asking them to select two Arts subjects for their Year 8 program. Your Head of Year will confirm this process with you within the next two weeks.

This week was the Academic Awards ceremony, which recognised those students achieving an Academic Pocket for a GPA of 13 and above and those students receiving an Academic Progress Award for an improvement since the previous semester of at least 1 GPA point.

There was an impressive number of girls that received awards on this day, and I know there are many more students that may not have received an award but who have shown gains in many areas of their academic life.

Students should now be looking at their feedback from their continuous reporting comments from Semester 1 to look at ways they can improve their skills within their subject areas. Our Academic Advising sessions in Years 9 - 12 over the next term will be focused on our students setting goals in response to this feedback.

Often this feedback indicates a change that needs to be made. For example, perhaps time management is an issue and so a change must be made in this area. Maybe feedback from the drafting process was not taken into account when submitting the final assessment piece, and so this must be addressed.

Congratulations to all students who have seen their hard work pay off. I also offer my encouragement to all students for this semester and wish them well with their learning goals.

At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s we follow a long line of strong women who have lived their lives with integrity and purpose – teaching us about what God is like and how deep God’s love for each of us is.

Friday 15 July:

Each year level was treated to an icecream bar in Eton Kitchen. The girls were able to pick their icecream flavour and mix in their favourite lollies. Boarders then enjoyed activities organised by their housemother with their cohort.

Saturday 16 July:

We celebrated our annual See My Difference See My Worth Festival. This event includes an afternoon of rotational cultural activities, run by the Year 12 boarders. Students tried their hand at island dancing and Indigenous dot painting, learned how to make Vietnamese rice paper rolls, and played a range of team games created by different cultures. In the evening, Circular Drive came alight with a DJ, disco lights, a bucking bull and a mechanical surfboard. Students enjoyed dinner from a range of different food stalls.

Sunday 17 July:

Boarders participated in the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Amazing Race. Eight teams set off from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and had to solve riddles, complete challenges and visit different locations throughout Brisbane. All teams ended up at South Bank where we enjoyed a pizza picnic lunch.

This weekend would not be possible without a mammoth effort from a number of people. A special thanks must go to our kitchen, facilities and IT teams, Lilly Devlin – Boarding Activities Coordinator, Lesa Fowler, Gracemere Mataia, Angela Crowe, boarding house staff and Year 12 boarders. Additionally, we’d like to thank the Senior Leadership Team for their support of this event.

Hannah Calcino

Particular recognition should go to the Year 12 cohort. There were an outstanding number of awards presented, which is indicative of this cohort’s drive to apply themselves all the way to the end and to rise up to challenges. I am so proud of their accomplishments so far this year and hope that this recognition provides some motivation to maintain this work ethic until the end of External Examinations.

QCAA courses

As part of preparation for their senior years, all students are required to complete the QCAA Academic Integrity course through the QCAA Student Portal. Students in Year 11 who have not yet completed this course have received an email from me reminding them that this must be completed prior to the commencement of Units 3 and 4 in Term 4 of this year. Year 10s will be allocated time in Academic Advising this semester to complete this course.

ATAR Indication Meetings

I am currently conducting ATAR indication meetings with Year 12 students who are ATAR-eligible. These bookings can be made via the POD. Parents are welcome to attend in person or via phone.

This is a great testament to the way in which many girls applied themselves to their academics last semester, particularly in light of the number of disruptions we experienced.

What I want for my children is that they are compassionate, empathetic and resilient, all underlined by a sense of wellbeing. Yes, I do want them to be happy – but not all the time. I believe we put too much pressure on our children to be happy because, let’s face it, if they’re happy then we’re happy. What a burden for them to carry. We need to be very careful of focusing continually on how they are feeling as this could inadvertently amplify feelings of anxiety or sadness.

As parents, we often try to smooth out the bumps in the road before our children trip up. Yes, we may be trying to cushion them from the disappointment of failure, but are we doing them any favours? Should we not rather use these opportunities to teach them the value of failure; teach them to acknowledge the disappointment and determine how they might improve in the next attempt and the next. The safe environment of school and home is the perfect place for them to learn these skills and thus build resilience.

Too often when parents level the path for their daughters, they are teaching them to be helpless because mum or dad will sort out any difficulties. More and more in our stressed and fast-paced world, we find students tend to pass the blame for forms not signed, drafts not completed or poor results. It is so important our children recognise they are responsible for their own success, be it academic or personal. Throughout their lives they will come across classmates, teachers, colleagues or bosses with whom they don’t gel. They need strategies to deal with these instances, not escape routes.

Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology – the study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals and communities to thrive – lists five components of the concept of flourishing (PERMA):

1. Positive emotions – happiness
2. Engagement – being completely absorbed in activities
3. Relationships – being authentically and positively connected to others
4. Meaning – connecting to things larger than oneself
5. Achievement – a knowledge of one’s genuine strengths

He states that as parents the emphasis that so many of us place on the first one comes at a cost to the other three. We would all do well – and through that, our children too – to take note.

I have noticed a growing trend of students being picked up early, especially on a Friday. As you are aware, school finishes early at 3 o’clock on Friday. This is an historical practice as it was set up so that boarders could leave early to travel home. I would encourage parents not to make appointments or travel arrangements earlier than 3 o’clock as students are still learning up until the conclusion of the day.

On Friday after lunch, students return to their own class and finalise learning for the week. They then attend House Chapel or House. House and Chapel are culturally and historically significant for 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students. House time is not just about the activities but also about the opportunity for Year 6 girls to act as leaders and for all girls to interact with students from other year levels. House contributes to the school culture and the long-time connection to the school. This term, students will also attend Chapel in House groups.  Attending Chapel is the cornerstone of our Anglican faith and it is a place and time for students to learn the rituals associated with Faith. A warm welcome is also extended to parents and families to join us for House Chapel. The next House Chapel is 12 August 2.15pm. Friday afternoon is an important time in your child’s weekly timetable.  

We understand that from time to time, students must attend appointments or external exams during school hours. If this is the case, we would like to make it a learning opportunity for the child by following the procedure outlined below:

1. Parents notify the class teacher about early leave at least 24 hours ahead of the time.
2. Parent informs own child (Years 3-6) about early leave – child records time in diary and is responsible for ensuring they tell the teacher the pick-up time, pack up and head to the office in time to be collected.
3. Parent comes to the office and signs out child while child is waiting in office.

We request unplanned pick-ups are kept to a minimum as it has a far-reaching impact. If you arrive at school for an early pick up, please come to the office, sign out and then office staff will give you a slip to take to the classroom teacher.  

Please understand we cannot call your daughter’s classroom to have your child come to the office as it impacts other children’s learning. It interrupts the class and not all classes have phones, therefore, other classes are also interrupted if administrative staff need to call and ask for your child to come to the office.

Please know we will support you and your child in the case of a family emergency.

Angela Drysdale

This term in M-Spired, students in Prep to Year 4 will be engaged in units that focus on the concept of Change. Prep students will investigate the affect change has on themselves and their environment. Year 1 students will investigate predictable changes that occur through seasons and day and night, and further exploring light and sound, finally creating their own shadow puppet play. Students in Year 2 will investigate changes to toys and technologies throughout time creating their own toy for the future. Our Year 3 students will explore earth and space, investigating relationships between the sun, moon and earth. Year 4 students will morph into museum curators as they explore how the great journeys of exploration occurred and brought about change, culminating in the development of the Year 4 Museum. We look forward to sharing and celebrating this learning.

ANGLICAN SCHOOLS MUSIC FESTIVAL

Congratulations to those students who have been nominated to perform at the upcoming Anglican Schools Music Festival at QPAC on Friday 12 August. Students rehearsed for a full day last Sunday at both 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and Cannon Hill Anglican College in preparation for the event under the tutelage of guest conductors Loreta Fin (String Orchestra), Rob McWilliams (Symphonic Band) and Sandra Milliken (Choir). The students also rehearsed a work written specially for the event by famous Australian composer Paul Jarman. For those who are interested in attending the Gala Concert, tickets are now available from QPAC ( or call 136 246) for $36. We are hoping to have many in attendance to support our student musicians.

CONGRATULATIONS – SHEP STUDENTS

Congratulations to the students who participated in the State Honours Ensemble Program last weekend. Hosted and organised by the Queensland Conservatorium, SHEP brings together secondary and primary school musicians from around southeast Qld to rehearse and perform together with renowned conductors. PRIMARY SCHOOL MUSIC NEWS

Week 1 was a busy week in the primary school with several musicians providing music at the primary assembly on the first day back. Congratulations to Lily Tribe and Isobel Stobie for playing our National Anthem on oboe and trumpet, Emily Carrick for leading the singing, and the Beath String Quartet for accompanying our school hymn. This is a great achievement for the first day of term and set a wonderful tone for the weeks ahead.

Netball Report

The first week of QG netball against Clayfield College started with a bang!  The Senior Bs and 9Bs came away with comfortable wins, with a special mention going to the Senior Bs who absolutely smashed it, winning by 53 goals! Another special mention should also go to the Senior As who despite a tough game displayed great determination playing right until the end. Well done to all the teams and we wish all teams the best of luck again this Saturday!

Hockey Report

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s hockey had an incredible first week of fixtures against Clayfield College. All players showed fantastic teamwork, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn, which was reflected in their results. Our Open team defeated Clayfield 8-0 and were brilliant to watch in their first game together. Similarly, our Senior As were victorious against Brisbane Girls Grammar, winning 4-1 and holding the attack for the majority of the game. 

The Junior As played a friendly match against Clayfield, with some of our Maggies girls joining the Clayfield team for the game to even up numbers. It was a great display of sportsmanship.

Despite the cold early morning fixtures, the girls were eager and excited to get on the field. This was great practise for what will undoubtedly be a tough game next week against St Aidan’s. 

We congratulate all 2022 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s hockey players, especially those who took part in their first ever hockey game. Everyone should be very proud of themselves and we look forward to the rest of the season!

Rhythmic Gymnastics 

Our rhythmic gymnastics team enter the final preparation stages of their season over the coming weeks.

This week, they shall compete in the friendly practice competition hosted here at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, before setting their sights on the 44^th QGSSSA Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships on Friday, 5 August.

Sporting Achievement

It’s with great pleasure that we can recognise the outstanding sport performances and representation of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students at a national and international level. I would like to highlight and congratulate the following students on their recent achievements:

• Holly Williams (Year 8) for her recent selection within the Queensland U13 Hockey Team. Holly's team will tackle the National Championships in Hobart, Tasmania in September-October. We wish Holly and her team all the best.
• Chelsea Johnson (Year 12) for her Water Polo team's qualification into the Junior Olympics, the largest Water Polo tournament in the United States. We wish Chelsea and her team all the best.

We would like to continue to recognise the outstanding achievements and representation of students’ participating a national level, outside of the school sport pathway.
