Last Friday, we celebrated 168��’s Day with our Annual 168��’s Day Run. Unfortunately, this year, with the absence of the Philip Harris Sports Centre, we decided to forego our usual service and assembly. Next year, the new Sports Precinct will be available for our traditional 168��’s Day celebrations and it will be a special one, as in 2020, we will be celebrating our 125th anniversary.

It is that time of year again when members of the school community can submit nominations for the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) for Inspirational Educators. This is an opportunity for our school community to publicly recognise and encourage our great teachers.

ASG’s National Excellence in Teaching Awards program was established in 1994 to honour exemplary teaching throughout Australia and New Zealand.

We know that parents value the efforts of our teachers and there are very few opportunities for a public expression of this appreciation and support. One way of doing this is by nominating a teacher for this award. Nominated teachers receive a congratulatory NEiTA Certificate of Nomination and become eligible for NEiTA State and National Awards.

Subject Selection for 2020
Over the holidays, students in Years 8 and 10 would have been discussing their subject choices for 2020 with parents. On Monday 5 August, students and their parents will have the opportunity to attend the Subject Selection evening, where they will have the chance to ask questions and speak to teachers about various subjects. Parents and students are encouraged to come to the evening so that they feel confident when making their selection.

Students in Year 9 in 2020 are able to take subjects in a major or minor strand, and students in Year 11 (2020) should be choosing subjects according to what they enjoy and what they are good at; these are the ones that will put them in the best position to achieve well in years to come. For those students moving into Year 11 2020, we also have set criteria in terms of groups of subjects students should choose from – this is to give our students the best possible chance of achieving their potential and open up as many pathways as possible after Year 12 and beyond. It is unreasonable to determine subject choices based on the career that they wish to pursue, as very few people at the age of 13, 14 or 15 years can know with any level of certainty what their career will be. Sometimes, students may need to move out of their comfort zones and try something that they would normally shy away from. They would certainly need parent support in order to take up this challenge. Luckily, in this day and age, the only subject prerequisites for university courses are English, a particular level of Mathematics, possible a Science and, occasionally a language.

As you will understand, not all students will be able to do their preferred subject choices and this is unfortunate – we would so love to be able to accommodate all individual preferences.

Year 11 2020 students will be choosing five (5) subjects, which will give them a line of independent study each week, that is the equivalent to 6 single lessons. This added time in the weekly timetable will assist students in consolidating their work over the five subjects they choose, as well as helping them organise their assignment work. Only students who receive less than a B- in English in Year 10 will do six subjects in Years 11 and 12. This will be done through consultation with Ms Butterworth.

On the afternoon of the 5th of August, all students in these year levels will receive an email with the information required for entering their subject preferences online. It is very important that this is done by 4pm on Friday 9 August 2019, as this is when the portal will be closed. For your records, please print a receipt of your subject selections. This is for your reference only - there is no need to submit this receipt to the school as we have an electronic copy of your preferences.

Closed Weekend
Community spirit was exemplified over the weekend, when all of the girls in the Boarding House came together. On Saturday, we celebrated our diverse community through different, unifying activities led by the Year 12s. These included: damper making, leaf art, different styles of dancing, whip cracking and games. Jo Armytage, an expert in clay, led one of these activities and worked with the girls to create clay pots showcasing the national flowers of the different countries represented in the Boarding House. These pieces will be a feature in the Boarding House with more work to be done on these over the coming weeks. We would like to thank Jo for her time and effort and we are looking forward to displaying this piece of art to the community. The evening ended with a live band and dancing.

On Sunday. we hosted “The Amazing Race” where the girls worked in teams to find their way from 168��’s to the Botanical Gardens in the city. Along the way they needed to complete different challenges with staff stationed at each point. The community spirit that was displayed over the weekend highlighted the willingness of all girls to participate and work with each other. The weekend could not have been possible without the planning and coordination by Gracemere Mataia, Fiona Spooner and Sandra Johnson. It was a wonderful weekend.

Academic Assembly
At the Academic Assembly on Tuesday we recognised the achievements of students in Semester 1 by awarding Progress Certificates and Academic Pockets.

To be eligible for the awards presented, the following criteria needs to be met:

Progress Certificates are awarded to student who have improved their GPA by at least 1 whole point.
Academic Pockets are awarded to students who have achieved a Grade Point Average of 13 or above with no overall grade lower than a B. This means that they have achieved at least an A- average.

Semester 1 Reporting
As mentioned in the letter that was sent with reports, the Semester 1 Reporting has now been finalised with all teachers entering results and comments from Semester 1. You can again access your daughter’s Semester 1 Report Card in Parent Lounge. Please note that changes to GPA were taken into account for Years 9 and 10 Digital Technologies students for the Academic Assembly held this week. ICAS Science, English, Maths and Writing Competitions
The International Competitions and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) are conducted yearly by UNSW Global at the University of New South Wales in schools throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region. These competitions are written to be challenging and assess skills the students may not have encountered.

This year, we would like to offer students in Years 7-12 the opportunity to nominate and pay to participate in these competitions. These competitions will be run under strict timed conditions on the following dates:

Thursday 5 September: Science, cost $15.00, 7:00am in The Independent Learning Centre
Tuesday 10 September: Writing, cost $15.00, 7:00am in The Independent Learning Centre

Ponytail Project
In 2015, news that a member of the 168��’s Anglican Girls School parent community was diagnosed with breast cancer fueled our girls’ hearts with a spontaneous desire to help. So many lives are touched by cancer and our girls felt overwhelmingly that they must do something – so began the Ponytail Project.

Last year, an amazing 90 students volunteered to cut off their ponytails, donating the hair for wigs for chemotherapy patients. Incredibly the girls – and the wider school community – raised almost $96,500 for Cancer Council Queensland, funding research programs into all cancers. So, the challenge for 2019 has been set!

The Ponytail Project has been so successful that the Cancer Council negotiated with the school to drive the campaign as an annual event and challenge other schools to get involved.

This year, the students will be fundraising again for both the Cancer Council and the Minotti Family. Amanda Minotti was a beloved Old Girl and teacher of the school who battled cancer. This year's Ponytail Project will raise funds for both Amanda's family and the Cancer Council's ongoing research.

Our sixteen new students have settled in well, thanks to our ‘Old Girls’. The new girls include five from overseas, who will be at 168��’s for a short time as they undertake a study experience. There will be benefits for all students; the study experience students will improve their English, while other students can learn about other cultures, first hand. The relationships the girls will form will help contribute to our school mission of developing global citizens. We also welcome Mrs Nicole Weinert as the new Administration Assistant - Primary. With the departure of Mrs Cox, Miss Surtees has taken on the role as Acting Assistant Head of Primary School. This role will include elements of her current role with me supporting the Cluster Program. We are most grateful to Miss Surtees for taking on this role, and we wish Mrs Cox well as she embarks on the huge task of relocating her family to northern New South Wales.

This week was the first assembly where we acknowledged NAIDOC Week, which occurred in the holidays. Each cluster presented their interpretation of this year’s theme, “Voice. Treaty. Truth”. This theme is a focus for all Australians to work together for a shared future. Thank you to the teachers and students for their insightful presentations. This marks the beginning of many special events this term with books being a major theme with three special events.

Bands Concert
Congratulations to all girls who performed at the Bands Concert on Wednesday evening. It was a brilliant night with many fantastic performances. A special congratulations to our Year 5 girls on their first public performance! Thank you to all students and conductors for their outstanding efforts. Thank you also to the Music Support Group for organising the refreshments and raffles, with particular thanks to the Year 5 parents for their donations.

Classics in the Cathedral
The 168��’s Music Department is very excited to again present our annual Classics in the Cathedral concert. Classics in the Cathedral will be held this year on Tuesday 13 August in St John’s Anglican Cathedral at 7:00pm. This is a spectacular evening of beautiful music, performed within the stunning setting of St John’s Cathedral and is one of the highlights of the yearly 168��’s music calendar. Tickets are $25 for adults (no cost for students/children) and may be purchased through Flexischools or at the door. Further information will be provided to students soon.

The next Music Support Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 30 July at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room (second floor of Chaseley). Parents from both the Primary and Secondary Schools are welcome to attend.

Winter Sports
The winter sport season got underway on Saturday 20 July, with our teams taking on Somerville House. The Hockey players had a great start to the season with both the Open and Junior A teams drawing 3-3 and 2-2 respectively. Our Tennis girls experienced success in the senior ranks with the Open, Senior As and Senior Cs all triumphant in their first round of matches.

The success continued on the Netball courts with our three Year 7 teams either winning or drawing, while the Opens showed great skill and strength to win 34-26. Our Volleyballers had mixed success with the Senior A and Year 7s winning 2 sets to 1. Congratulations to all girls on a great start to the season and we look forward to competing against Brisbane State High School on Saturday 27 July at their venues. Queensland School Sport Cross Country Success
168��’s had six girls compete at the Queensland School Sport Cross Country Championships. Congratulations to Annabel Bright, Matilda Lee, Milla Roberts, Isabella Harte, Chloe Fenwicke and Bella Donaldson.

Congratulations to Isabella Harte who won this event easily in a fast 14 minutes over 4km. Also securing a top ten result and a place at the National Cross Country Championships is Matilda Lee, placing 5th and Chloe Fenwicke, placing 4th.

Congratulations to…
Chelsea Johnson (Year 9) and Emma Pickering (Year 9) who recently participated at the 2019 U14 Australian Water Polo Championships in Hobart for Queensland. Their team remained undefeated throughout the tournament and were crowned National Champions. Special mention goes to Chelsea who captained the team throughout the tournament.

Sarah Stephenson (Year 8) who competed at the State Club Championships for Delta Gymnastics and the Boarder Challenge in the Queensland team. In both competitions Sarah’s teams won gold, making her club team the best in Queensland and the Queensland team the best in Australia. Well done!

Important Dates:

Applications for the 2020 Global Exchange Program close at 5pm on Friday 26 July. Applications are to be submitted to Ms Achari either via email: aachari@stmargarets.qld.edu.au or hand-delivered to Main Reception in Mooloomburram.
Cultural Intelligence Testing for all 2020 Exchange applicants will take place in the Arts Centre Foyer on Monday 5 August during Academic Advising, between 9:50am and 10:25am.
Interviews for the 2020 Exchange Program commence 19 August – individual times with further instructions will be sent out by 31 July.
Visiting Exchange students travel to Sydney on a 2-day cultural excursion, 22-23 August.

Friends of MAYO warmly invite you to celebrate the Arts at our famous Long Lunch! On Sunday 11 August, the Arts Centre Gallery will be transformed into an Australian-themed restaurant. The menu celebrates the long history of our country and all the cultures that have contributed to the styles of food.

The second ‘Postcard Project’ will run alongside the Lunch as we offer for sale unique little postcard sized artworks. Our vision is that we plant the seed of collecting with our girls – gift them their first original artwork! There is certainly something for everyone. If you attend the Long Lunch, you get first choice of the pieces, but they will remain on sale for the week following the Lunch, 12-18 August.

Many of our girls have fantastic business ideas but don’t know how to get from where they are to where they want to be. The Global Studies faculty have arranged an evening where three entrepreneurs, who have been there, will share their stories of success and failure.

QTAC’s admissions period runs from the beginning of August 2019 to the end of June 2021. The cost will be $44 which includes three changes of preferences.

The UQ situational judgement test for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours). tests are scheduled in August, October and November 2019. Registration will open shortly and will remain open until the day before the scheduled November exam date.
