Each year, the Old Girls’ Association (OGA) invites graduates of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s to apply for a scholarship to receive some financial assistance to study overseas.

Funding for the scholarships is provided by the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Old Girls’ Association (OGA) and is available for students for undergraduate and postgraduate overseas study for periods of 6 months and 12 months. Students in Year 12 who have organised overseas study for the following year may also apply.

In 2019, the following 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s graduates were successful candidates for OGA Overseas Study Scholarships 2019-2020. Congratulations to past students, Annabelle and Lucy.

The OGA, through providing these scholarships, offers another way for our past students to remain connected to their school and we are very appreciative of their support.

Applications for the OGA Overseas Scholarships 2020 – 2021 are now open and are due Friday 19 June 2020. Preference will be given to students studying at an overseas tertiary institution/university for one or more semesters. Candidates studying overseas but not at a university are also welcomed to apply. Application forms may be found by following this link.

Please note applications can be received at any time but those received after the 19th June 2020 will not be considered.

I would like to commend to you, particularly those families with students in Years 10-12, the School of Life initiative that began this year. Each week, students are invited to join informative sessions that are designed to assist them with the skills they may need outside of school. With only a few weeks remaining this term, the School of Life team will be working really hard to deliver presentations each week, starting from Week 2.

The following presentations have been scheduled to take place this term:

• Tuesday 15 October: Nutrition, presented by Mrs Jo Butterworth and Ms Erin Buckingham
• Tuesday 22 October: Tax Matters, presented by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO)

We highly encourage all students in Years 10-12 to attend these sessions. We are already underway in preparation for next year and we can assure you that it will be even bigger in 2020 with the full support of Pitcher Partners and Westpac. I would also like to thank all the teachers involved in the School of Life program. 

Absentee Notifications

Throughout 2019, 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø's has been reviewing our current parent portal structure on the POD with a view to create a comprehensive and accessible information portal for parents. The rollout of this new portal will be phased in across the term, so please be aware that the look and structure of the platform will be changing throughout Term 4 2019. A significant aspect of the new structure will be the introduction of a new Absence Notification system.

When you access your POD dashboard in Term 4, you will notice a new button entitled: Notify us of an absence. When you click on this button, you will be taken to a page that outlines options for notifying the school of your daughter's absence and the reason for her absence. Further information about how this process works will be provided in a separate communique prior to the introduction of this new feature.

In the busyness of Term 4, I thought it would be helpful for us to remember to be grateful. I came across the work of Brother David Steindl-Rast many years ago. It was ten years ago that a 5-minute video called “A Good Day” was produced. The video is very special as it encourages us to be grateful for what we have. On the tenth anniversary of this milestone video, a new one has been produced, the link can be .

To me, producing a new video reveals the need for a reminder to be grateful. The website talks about why such a video is needed. Firstly, because of the stress in the world, we need to be reminded to slow down and notice the world around us and be grateful. When I watch the video, it makes me take a deep breath and let go of everything that is on my mind. Brother David asks us to notice the world around us and remind ourselves how fortunate we are and to be grateful. Just as importantly it encourages us to connect and to care for each other.

I encourage you to take 5 minutes out of your busy day to watch this video. May we be grateful for all we have.

The girls do not always see the logic in some of the decisions we make, which is often evident on day one of a new term where they are welcomed to a new room with different boarders. This is always done with the intention of helping to develop their character, to further develop their strengths and encourage them to develop new skills. It is about ensuring that we are always encouraging the girls to grow, to develop resilience and prepare them with the skills that they will need to negotiate in the world outside of the Boarding House. One of the most important lessons Boarding teaches the girls is that they exist as part of a whole, they must contribute to their society and the fun they have will only match the eזּÄort they put in. They are part of a wider team and the success of that team relies upon their contributions and their good character to thrive.

In Year 10 Maths, the girls will begin a preparatory unit in Maths 10.1 and 10.2 for General Maths and Maths Methods respectively. The concepts studied during this term will provide the foundational knowledge for their studies next year and enable the teachers and students to identify and work on any gaps in understanding.

In Year 11, all students will begin their study of Unit 3 in all subjects at various stages throughout this term. This means that the assessment students are completing is summative and will begin to contribute to their ATAR. The assessment planner is available on the Year 11 POD page to assist the girls’ preparation of their study schedule.

For Year 11 parents, we have moved the Information Evening that usually takes place at the beginning of the year to Monday 21 October, from 6:30-7:30pm. During this evening we will take a look at how Units 3 and 4 have been redesigned at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, our preparation for external assessment in 2020 and the support available for your daughter.

Another key event that has been planned to support you and your daughters is the Trends in Education presentation on Wednesday 30 October 2019, from 5:30-7:00pm. HeadSpace are an organisation who provide wonderful resources to assist students and parents to develop positive ways to handle stressful times, build resilience, develop self-awareness and build confidence. This presentation will provide parents and teachers with strategies to help keep your girls mentally and emotionally agile by assisting them to develop their own personal coping strategies. The seminar will be hosted in the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Arts Centre Foyer and you can RSVP to Reception@stmargarets.qld.edu.au.

The article suggested strategies to do this, these are simple and common sense and I thought I would share them with you as you may be able to use them at home with your daughter.

1. Help you daughter to see the meaning in her stress

The ideal life isn’t stress-free. According to the Gallup World Poll, the happiest people on earth report high, not low, levels of stress. The reason why the girls feel stress is because school and learning are things they care about. When you care a lot, you experience more stress. Therefore, help your daughter see this, and work on strategies such as time management, social media free time and stillness to assist with seeing the meaning and normalising and not catastrophising.

2. Help her to focus on a Growth Mindset

This can protect your daughter against some of the harmful effects of stress. Get her to focus on what is going well and how to move through the ‘rough patch’ using productive strategies, such as talking about the learning that is happening in the ‘rough’ times and focus on the feelings when this ‘patch’ has past.

3. Practice Vicarious Resilience with your daughter

Vicarious resilience is what psychologists call the flip side of contagious stress. It’s the ability to ‘catch’ resilience from those we see persevere, grow and thrive. Get your daughter to think how someone else might deal with the same problem. Talk to them about how you deal with pressure and how you have seen others deal with stress. Too often, the girls think they are the only one who is feeling ‘stressed’, and this leads to the final mindset shift when feeling stressed.

4. Get her to think about our common humanity

A mindset of “I’m the only one” can drive your daughter to self-destructive behaviors like procrastinating, catastrophisng and hiding her problems from people who can help. In contrast, letting your daughter know that others share stress is a powerful source of resilience. Teaching your daughter that pressure/stress are normal to all people she will be less likely to give up on her goals, more willing to talk with others about her problems, and more likely to get the support she needs.

Sony Camp

On the first weekend of the September holidays, Year 11 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s and Years 11/12 Churchie students amalgamated to prepare for the annual Sony Foundation Children’s Holiday Camp. The camp saw 30 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s students wholeheartedly dedicate their time to become the primary carers for approximately thirteen female intellectually and physically impaired children. The school also provided 5 caterers who prepared and served food and cleaned up and 3 media students who took invaluable photos during the camp for over 100 people.

Since 1999, the Camp Program has given Years 11 and 12 students the opportunity to care for a child with special needs over a four-day period in what is a unique and life-changing experience for all involved. Each camp is provided free of charge for the participants and the majority of the camps run in the September and December school holidays.

The students, supported by a team of dedicated teaching and medical staff, are responsible for the care of these children twenty-four hours a day over the course of the Camp. They quickly learn about the challenges and demands involved in caring for a child with special needs. Not only do the students have an enriching experience, but the children are treated to a weekend full of activities and interactions they would not normally have the opportunity to experience. The Camps also provide much needed respite for parents, siblings and primary carers in what may be their only break for the year.

The eager guests arrived on Saturday morning and their grateful families handed a challenging responsibility over to the students. In return, the parents received beautiful gift packs, which were donated and prepared by the generous 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s community. A range of activities were available throughout the camp including; swimming, art activities, disco and a trip to Lone Pine.

Through great acts of devotion, persistence and responsibility, each companion and helper ensured that their guest’s experience was one that they would never forget. When the students relinquished the responsibility of their guest back to the parents, it was clear that the students’ contribution to the camp had made a significant impact on not only the children, but their inspirational parents, many of whom were able to take a well-deserved break. The camp deeply broadens students’ understanding of the realities and complexities of life as they carefully consider the lives of those living with a disability and the impacts this can have on their families. It must also be noted that our 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Year 11 students attended lunch time workshops prior to the camp learning how to assist high needs children under the guidance of these staff members.

There were many staff involved in the Sony Camp experience. Kudos must go to Mrs Wade for the tremendous contribution she has made to Sony Camp over many years. Her work in the area of planning and preparing meals has been an integral part of the camp for a long time. I would also like to particularly thank Ms Anderson, who facilitated the camp with the staff from Churchie, Ms O’Callaghan for her assistance and Ms Pallot who oversaw the care of each guest and coordinated the nursing staff. Thank you also to Ms Montgomery who also helped supervise over the weekend.

I whole heartily agree with this research, but I also think we offer so many more opportunities that contribute to our girls’ holistic development and in turn, self-confidence. However, the success of these opportunities lies with our teachers. The girls are blessed to have teachers who are committed to providing the very educative experience. As one parent recently wrote to me, “I note, with all the incredible teachers, the wisdom of giving them courage and faith and acceptance in the ‘learning pit’ is why girls in the Primary school are academically thriving”.

One example happened during the holidays when I accompanied 20 Years 5 and 6 girls to Japan. Thank you to Brad King, Kimberley Bachmann and Kate Jones for also accompanying the girls. This trip is an outcome of our relationship with our sister school and weekly Japanese club, which focuses on language and understanding Japanese culture.

This trip offers first hand so many experiences for the students. Educationally, they develop an understanding and tolerance of another culture, one that is similar and one that is significantly different. Personally, the girls learn to live together, be aware of others, manage money, develop personal responsibility for self and belongings and develop self confidence through the whole experience.

Participation in team sports was also identified as a contributor to self-confidence and our support for this is evident in the many sports and activities on offer. This term, three new sport activities are on offer. These include nursery netball, cricket and water polo and the other sports as listed below.:

Music Dinner

Music Dinner will be held on Friday 8 November, 6:00-9:30pm in Eton Hall. The annual Music Dinner is an occasion where students and parents celebrate the culmination of a wonderful year of music at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. This year’s theme is ‘Music Behind the Movies (Music of John Williams)’. Girls are encouraged to explore the many movies to which John Williams wrote the soundtrack to create their costume for the event. Music Dinner is open to students in Years 6-12 who have been involved in the Co-curricular Music Program. Tickets are available only via Flexischools (). For catering purposes, it is imperative you include any dietary requirements and that payments are made by 4pm, Sunday 3 November, as Flexischools will be unavailable after this time. Student Congratulations

Congratulations to Yinghong (Holly) Xu (Year 6) who completed her 7th Grade Practical Violin exam and Grade 3 Theory exam and was awarded Honours. This is an impressive achievement for any musician, so to receive these results at the age of 11 years old is outstanding! Holly was also guest soloist earlier in the year, performing with her ensemble WSSO (Western Suburbs String Orchestra) and the QYO (Queensland Youth Orchestra) at The Old Museum. Holly performed the Bach Concerto in A minor and should be exceptionally proud of her achievements.

Term 4 Sport

Throughout Term 4 there are many events, competitions and trainings for our students to look forward to. Below is the list of sports available in Term 4:

Softball: Years 7-9 currently trialling with the QGSSSA competition to be held on Tuesday 29 October, Thursday 31 October, Monday 4 November and Wednesday 6 November.

Badminton: Years 7-12 currently trialling and training with competition being held on Saturday 26 October for our Senior and Year 10 teams and Saturday 2 November for all Years 7, 8 and 9 teams.

Swimming: Training for all year levels will commence from Monday 14 October. The training schedule is available via the Secondary Swimming POD page.

Cricket: All girls can now register to play with training commencing on Tuesday 22 October.

Water Polo

The Water Polo season is back and over 50 girls participated in the two-day camp held on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 October at Yeronga Park Swimming Pool. Teambuilding, individual skill sessions, team sessions, game play and the inaugural ironwoman challenge were all part of the weekend in preparation for the first round of games on Saturday 12 October. Within the scheduled activities, all team members demonstrated a high level of effort and focus as they received coaching from one of the best, 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Coaching Director and Head QAS coach, Nicola Johnson. Many thanks to Coordinator, Ms Ethell, assistant coaches and the Support Group for the time and effort given to the Water Polo Program over the weekend.

Knowles Cup Tennis

While the QGSSSA Tennis Season finished last term, more Tennis continues with the Knowles Cup Tennis competition commencing this weekend where 4 teams – Open A, Open B, Intermediate and Junior – compete for 5 weeks against a variety of Uniting, Catholic and Anglican school from Brisbane and Toowoomba.

We look forward to the competition and the outcome of the final rounds on 9 November. Best of luck to all teams.

Rowing - Queensland Schools’ Championships

The 2019 Queensland Schools’ Championship Regatta was held on the 21-23 September at Wyaralong Dam. 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s sent a 51-strong team of rowers from Years 8 to 12 to compete in a multitude of events. It was a hot weekend with long days and multiple races throughout the day to compete in. Ice baths were brought in to cool the rowers between races and give them the edge going into their finals.

The regatta kicked off with a bit of fun as 5 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍøs senior rowers combined with 4 senior Churchie rowers to take out the mixed eight sprint race. Over the weekend, all girls raced incredibly well, learning a lot along the way which they will take into the much anticipated 2020 season ahead. A big thank you to all the students, coaches and parents the made the weekend so enjoyable.

The recently acquired wall mounted sculptural work by Donna Marcus entitled ‘Florette’, 2016, adds interest to the Dalhousie stairwell. The changing light will reflect beautifully in the piece made from Marcus’ iconic anodised aluminium kitchen ware - in this case brioche tins!

Our community will appreciate our special relationship with internationally renowned, Donna Marcus who was an integral influence in the origins of the MAYO Festival.

Our relationship with Fireworks Gallery has also grown during their enduring and enthusiastic support of our MAYO Festival exhibitions. Michael and Danica Eather, Directors of Fireworks, have donated a marvellous work, ‘Late Afternoon Shower’ by Rosella Namok who is the most celebrated member of the Lockhart River Art Gang in Far North Queensland. Her works are hung in all state and national galleries in Australia, as well as many overseas collections.

Coincidentally, Rosella Namok will attend the Yalari Dinner in October this year, so hopefully some of our girls will have the opportunity to talk with her about her career.

Jenny Lishman

Surviving against all odds, Trish Jackson uses her disability to educate the next generation; the key to ending bullying and discrimination. Trish is one of 10,000 babies born with several birth defects because her mother was given a sample packet of the drug Thalidomide, a supposedly ‘safe’ drug, during her pregnancy.

After graduating, Trish’s second job was ironically in the health department in the pharmaceutical section – ironic for two reasons: she was the result of the greatest pharmaceutical disaster in the world and the government who had told her she ‘could not work’ ended up being her employer for over a decade.

Today, she is a guest speaker and agent for change – she is still campaigning for compensation after 57 years for the harm caused by the drug Thalidomide.

Join us for our PWN Cocktail event as Trish will share how, in the face of adversity, she has chartered her own professional path and how corporate workplaces can create a more inclusive culture.
