There is a lot of talk about the so called ‘soft skills’ such as communication skills, social and emotional intelligence, cultural awareness, collaboration skills and empathy. However, there is nothing soft about these skills. In fact, they can be quite hard and there is little doubt they will be the discerning factor in future success.

The label ‘soft skills’ diminishes their value over the hard skills of knowledge acquisition and technical expertise. In schools, it is the hard skills which are most often the focus of reports. At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, we have recognised the importance of soft skills and dispositions in life, and behind the scenes we have been conducting a trial on Year 11 students’ extra-curricular data, which we call 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Plus. We have identified which skills tend to be developed by involvement in a range of activities (such as Debating, Water Polo, TocH) and are mapping the students’ opportunities to develop skills through other activities, not just the classroom. It is not a perfect system, but we are responding to the literature on the future of work and the skills required and the call from the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) to prioritise the soft skills in schools:

‘Students will need to apply their knowledge in unknown and evolving circumstances. For this, they will need a broad range of skills, including cognitive and meta-cognitive skills (eg, critical thinking, creative thinking, learning to learn and self-regulation); social and emotional skills (eg, empathy, self- efficacy and collaboration); and practical and physical skills (eg, using new information and communication technology devices).’ (OECD, 2018, The Future of Education and Skills: Education 2030), Paris.

Information detailing the arrangements for rehearsals and tickets has been sent to all families in previous weeks and also detailed below are the rehearsal details conducted throughout the day on Tuesday 12 November at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

**It is very important that, if you have booked tickets and no longer need them, please forward them to Ms Kristie Govender at KGovender@stmargarets.qld.edu.au so that we can reallocate them to families who may have missed out on tickets.

This is a compulsory event for students in Years 5 to 12. Secondary students and Primary prize recipients are required to wear white church dresses. Non-prize recipients in Years 5 and 6 may wear either their church dresses or Middy.

Speech Night Rehearsal – Tuesday 12 November 2019

The following students are required to attend Speech Night Rehearsals at QPAC:

8:45am: All Years 5-11 prize recipients will be transported to QPAC from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s for Speech Night rehearsal and return to the school at 10:45am.

9:45am: Year 12 Boarders and Day students requiring transport will be bussed to QPAC from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s for Year 12 Rehearsal. Year 12 students who are not prize recipients or musicians may leave independently from QPAC at 11:30am. A bus will be provided for Boarders at 11:30am.

 10:30am: Year 12 students to meet at Door 5 of the Concert Hall, QPAC.

10:30am: All Years 5-11 musicians (not already at QPAC) will be transported to QPAC for Speech Night Music rehearsals. The Musicians will receive a short lunch break whilst at QPAC and students are advised to bring their own lunch on this day as the cafeteria will be available for soft drinks only. All musicians will be returned to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s following the rehearsal, prior to the end of the school day.

To ensure an effective and straightforward rehearsal for Speech Night, all students involved on the night must be in attendance and punctual for the transport provided to QPAC in the morning. Girls need to bring their own morning tea; and lunch (musicians).

At the same time of the year, many people acknowledge Halloween, or All-Hallow-Evening, which is usually on the eve of All Saints Day. At Halloween, children go around in fun costumes to trick or treat.

It may be useful to know some of the history surrounding Halloween. It is said to have begun within the Celtic tradition. There was a harvest festival which was known as Samhain. The 31st of October is also said to be when “the boundary between the living and the deceased is dissolved”. This is where the wearing of costumes began. People wore costumes and masks in an “attempt to mimic the evil spirits or to placate them”. Then over a 1,000 years ago the Christian Church decided to institute a Christian alternative to Halloween. It is said that All Hallow’s Day, the 1st November, was when the church celebrated “the holy” remembering those who were faithful Christians who had died.

When I was growing up, I don’t remember celebrating Halloween. The concept which is an American holiday has slowly crept into our culture. Now there are many young people who like to dress up as superheroes and fairy princesses going door to door, hoping for a treat.

This year, I will be remembering all those who have gone before us, especially people close to me, knowing that they are safe with God. My father died this year and I miss him dearly. I will be using this time to remember him and honour his life. As a Christian I believe that we have our time here on earth, then there is our time when we leave this earth and walk closely with our God, the Divine Love. My faith in the Divine Love brings comfort when I remember those who have gone before us. A way of remembering our dear ones is to light a candle or place some flowers near their photo, or their grave, as a way of remembering them in our lives. Perhaps you may like to thank God for the time you enjoyed with them.

The role of a Big Sister is to encourage their buddies in a positive way, establish positive self-worth, self-efficacy and identity with their buddies and to help them establish positive bonds with others; within the Boarding House, peers, family and community.

The Eight Principles of being an effective ‘Big Sister’ underpin this program:

1. Be a friend – you are a role model and can provide support and gentle guidance.
2. Have realistic goals and expectations.
3. Have fun together.
4. Be positive.
5. Let your little sister have most of the control over what the two of you talk about.
6. Listen.
7. Respect the trust your little sister places in you.
8. Remember that you are responsible for building the relationship.

Trends in Education – Building Resilience

Last night, we welcomed Kris Deighton, Community Engagement Coordinator from Headspace to speak about building resilience at our second Trends in Education Seminar for 2019. Kris highlighted the fact that there is no one cause for mental health concerns and that we can work with our daughters to assist them to cope with difficult situations and overcome feelings of anxiety. Interestingly, he identified the three pillars of mental health to be eating well, getting enough sleep and exercising, which are important for us to encourage as the girls move into exams.

An important takeaway message was his number one hope that all young people have a supportive family or network of carers to work with them through the ages of 12- 25 where we see 75% of mental health concerns arise. If you are concerned that your daughter is showing ongoing signs of anxiety and/or depression, he suggested a four-step approach for supporting them:

1. Ask how they are doing e.g. are you ok?
2. LISTEN to what they say without interrupting.
3. Encourage positive coping strategies e.g. pre-bedtime relaxation, making a to-do list, slow breathing and grounding techniques.
4. Check in on how they’re doing later.

All students in Years 7 and 8 will receive a school produced diary that has been redesigned to help develop skills of organisation and self-management. However, students in Years 9 to 12 will have the opportunity to purchase this diary from the school for a small cost or provide their own. Years 9 to 12 students may even choose to use systems on their laptop to organise themselves such as The POD, Outlook, Sticky Notes or another electronic diary. Academic Advisors will work with students in Years 9 to 12 at the beginning of the year to assist and ensure each student has a system for recording homework, assessment and other deadlines. Policy and procedure documents that have previously been put in the Student Handbook will be saved to the POD for parent and student access.

The purpose of this change is two-fold. Firstly, the change is about continuing to work with all students to develop individual skills of self-management and secondly, to ensure we are being environmentally aware in our use and production of paper-based products.

End of the Year Reporting Process (Years 7-11)

End of Semester Reports will be available to be accessed through Parent Lounge on Friday 6 December, after 3:00pm. Please note, all Continuous Reporting Information will also be available from this date.

Each student’s report will consist of a comment from her Head of Year, as well as a summary for each subject. The final page of the report is the Grade Point Average (GPA) graph which records the student’s overall level of achievement and tracks this from semester to semester.

For each subject, there is a list of the course content, marks for the criteria assessed, a table showing the distribution of achievement levels within the subject and an assessment of your daughter’s attitude to her learning. The academic results reflected in this report are based on the assessment completed throughout Semester 2.

Please note, that Year 12 students do not receive a final End of Semester 2 Report from the school as final results will be recorded on your daughters Queensland Certificate of Education that is sent from QCAA.

  In terms of behavioural expectations on this important evening, could parents please assist us in ensuring that girls do not bring the following items to the event:

• iPods and earphones or gaming devices
• Preferably no mobile phones. Any student with a mobile phone will need to place it in a collection box when rolls are marked at the beginning of the evening. Phones will be held securely with the teachers for the duration of Speech Night and can be collected at the end of the ceremony from the roll marking checkpoint.

Thank you to Morgan Rowe for her organisation and planning for the hosting of this event. Thank you also to Kate Jones, Suzy Edwards, Kylie Briggs and Karrie House who coached and Georgina Stevenson who kept score on the day. Thank you to Year 6 girls: Charlotte Swarbrick, Mariana Breslin, Zoe Rossiter, Teresa Sweeney, Molly Robson, Emily Smith, Bronte Lahy, Madeleine Jamieson, Milly Coleman and Bronte Hawkins who assisted on the day and were fabulous ambassadors for the school.

This competition was a momentous occasion as it was the last Softball competition for Andrews Cup. Next year, there will be changes to the Andrews Cup competition. The changes are based on research about girls in sport and, after many discussions, it will see the replacement of Softball and the introduction of additional elective sports and invitational sports.

In 2020, the program of events will consist of:

Core sports (all schools compete): Swimming, Athletics and Cross Country

Elective sport (schools elect to compete): Artistic Gymnastics, Netball, Cricket, Touch Football, Basketball, Football, Soccer and Tennis.

Next year will see 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s introduce and host Cricket. We are very excited to be responsible for the introduction of the fastest growing female sport and to work closely with Queensland Cricket, who will partner with us. On the weekend, some families took advantage of this partnership when they watched Brisbane Heat WBBL. It was lovely to see so many families enjoying the cricket!

The final sports for the year will be the individual sport, Gymnastics and Basketball. We wish the girls in the team good luck for next week.

Chaseley Concert Band - Music Fest

Congratulations to Chaseley Concert Band on their performance at Music Fest on Monday evening. The girls were awarded silver for their 3 band pieces, which is a wonderful achievement. Thank you to Dr Syntageros for her direction of the girls in preparation for the competition and well done to all the students for their practice and hard work in rehearsals.

Music Fest Performance – Stage Band

The Stage Band will participate in Music Fest this coming Friday 1 November at Calamvale Community College. The performance will be at 6:00pm. This is a valuable experience for the girls where they will receive feedback on their performance and have the opportunity to hear similar ensembles from other Brisbane schools. St Mark’s

Chorale have been invited to perform at the St Mark’s Anglican Church Arts Festival (Bonney Ave, Clayfield) on Saturday 2 November at 4:30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for our girls to perform and connect with the local community. All parents and friends are warmly invited to hear the girls perform and also enjoy the festivities that will occur as part of the festival. A letter with further details is attached (PDF 145.5KB).

Boarder Musicians’ Concert

A number of our Boarder musicians presented musical items at our Semester 2 Boarder Musicians’ Recital on Tuesday evening. Congratulations to all girls who performed! It was wonderful to see the girls growing both in performance skills on their respective instruments and in confidence.

Speech Night

Speech Night will be held on Tuesday evening 12 November and is a very special event in the School’s calendar. The evening is a celebration of the girls’ achievements throughout the year, and the Music Department is very much looking forward to supporting the event with several special musical performances. Music Support Group Meeting

At 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, the Private Speech and Drama Program offers a fun, supportive environment for students to gain skills in interpersonal communication, presentation, performance and public speaking. Enrolments for Private Speech and Drama lessons for 2020 are now open for students who will be in Years 2 to 12 next year.

I have only just arrived back from holidays where I went to France, Switzerland and Italy with my host family. I am having the most amazing time over here and love learning about the European culture.

I just wanted to give you an update on exchange so far - it’s been amazing!

Once I arrived in South Africa, I stayed with my partner Mia in Johannesburg for a few days. She took me to see some really incredible things. The highlight would definitely be visiting an elephant sanctuary, where I was able to see and touch an elephant for the first time. After staying with Mia and her family, I met up with Ellie, Ella and Ash and we flew to Pietermaritzburg where St Anne’s is located. We have all adjusted really well into school life here, and all the girls are so lovely and welcoming.

The past few weekends have been filled with great activities such as ziplining through the canopies, visiting the Moses Mabhida Stadium where some girls went on the highest swing in the world, viewing the Nelson Mandela Capture Site, walking along Durban beachfront, going to a waterpark and, last weekend, we were fortunate to stay in Transkei which is a beautiful beach area! This weekend we’re going shopping before we head to Capetown for mid-term break.

During the week we’ve also been attending co-curricular activities. Ellie, Ella and I do ‘Funky Dance’ as well as use the gym facilities, and I also joined the choir. On some Monday’s this term we attended different South African schools including Voortrekker High School and Pietermaritzburg Girls High School. It was very interesting to see the similarities and differences between each school. We have also been lucky enough to participate in the STEP program where we visit local schools and help underprivileged children by teaching them English and interacting with them. It was definitely an eye-opening experience which we will never forget.

We are all really enjoying every part of this exchange trip so far and we are extremely excited for the rest of the term.

Ella and I thought it would be time to send an update on what we have been up to so far.

We have currently been in Japan for almost 4 weeks, which is hard to believe because our time here has flown by! We have both adjusted nicely to the Japanese culture, lifestyle and school as everyone has made us feel so welcome.

So far, we have been to Universal Studios, Kobe Ciity sightseeing around the port, Kobe Zoo, jewellery class and plenty of shopping and eating! Ella has also been to Sumoto Onsen Resort for a weekend and I have been to the shrines in Kyoto and the Rugby World Cup. We have been very fortunate to have seen so much so far and will be travelling to Minamata for Konan’s school camp tomorrow for two nights, learning about fish that carried diseases and how this effected the local people of the town.

Hire of Church Dresses for Speech Night – Tuesday 12 November 2019

Hiring of the church dresses has commenced. To hire a dress, a ‘Hire Conditions of Church Dress’ form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian. This form is available on the Supplies Shop page on the school website or from the Supplies Shop.

Completed and signed forms are to be returned to the School Supplies Shop, together with a deposit of $100. Plain white, fold down ankle socks (not 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s competition socks), clean brown school shoes and a white ribbon (for long hair) are to be worn with the church dress on Speech Night. Socks are available from the School Supplies Shop for $8.00 as is a white ribbon for $1.

The return date for all students, except Year 6, is no later than Friday 22 November 2019. Year 6 students’ church dresses must be returned no later than Friday 29 November 2019.

All church dresses must be laundered, ironed and returned as per the ‘Hire Conditions’ for an amount of $70 to be refunded.

Uniform Fitting Appointments – New online booking system

Bookings for November and December 2019 and January 2020 are available online now. Book your appointment online via the school website.

We encourage families to book a fitting appointment as soon as possible to avoid missing your preferred day and time. The School Crossing Supervisor may be required to work five days per fortnight in all weather conditions. The hours of work for the School Crossing Supervisor are 1 hour and 30 mins a day and comprises 45 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes in the afternoon.

The current rate of pay is $30.34 per hour.

Commencement of work for the successful applicant is dependent on:

OGA Annual General Meeting

The Old Girls’ Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 26 November from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the Mooloomburram Boardroom. Past students of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s are warmly invited to attend to share their views and ideas.
