Our current Year 12s are also counting down the days – and experiencing the ‘lasts’ in school days. As each final assessment piece occurs, students are finishing their subjects and the excitement they are feeling is almost tangible.

‘Transitions’ in life are often exciting but, of course, they can also be accompanied with a little bit of fear and anxiety. Whether it is going from Primary to Secondary school, Year 10 to Year 11 or Year 12 to work or tertiary study, each requires more personal responsibility and self-regulation. This can be challenging for some but can be assisted by thorough preparation (becoming knowledgeable about the new environment and the expectations) and by developing good habits around organisation and managing time.

When it comes to explaining gender inequality and the gender pay gap, confidence is generally cited as a major reason as to why women do not enter certain fields of work or rise to high-level management positions which attract high salaries and bonuses. However, a major study of gender inequality by University of Queensland researchers has found that girls attending single-sex Secondary schools (168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s is part of this research) are as confident as their male counterparts. So, if it’s not confidence in girls and young women that’s undermining gender equality, what is?

Dr Terry Fitzsimmons, Senior Lecturer in Leadership at the University of Queensland and Managing Director of the newly-established Australian Gender Equality Council, leads a research team which has found that, contrary to expectations, high school girls have the same level of confidence as boys. Therefore, he says, it is unlikely that it is confidence that is holding women back in the workplace.

Working in collaboration with the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia, researchers from the University of Queensland Business School surveyed over 10,000 boys and girls in Years 7 to 12 at Queensland Secondary schools. They also interviewed 500 students about their understanding of gender equality, leadership, self-confidence, subject choices and career aspirations. All the girls taking part in the research project attended girls’ schools in Queensland.

Lead researcher, Terry Fitzsimmons recently told Radio National journalist, Fran Kelly that “there was no significant difference in self-confidence at any age” between boys and girls in Secondary school which, in his words, “dispels the myth that there’s a confidence gap”. Whatever is happening, says Fitzsimmons, is happening after girls leave school “and probably points to structural issues in the workplace preventing opportunity, rather than an inherent lack of confidence”.

One major structural issue noted by researchers is that STEM graduates provide the pool from which most senior executives and CEOs are chosen, yet only 15% of Australian engineering graduates are female and only two-thirds of these women move into critical operational engineering roles which are considered the most valuable when applying for executive and CEO roles later in their careers.

Another interesting and important finding of the research project is that high school girls are less aware of their parents‘ careers than boys, with 15% of Year 7 girls being unable to name either of their parents’ occupations compared with 6% of boys.

Again, Fitzsimmons believes that this goes to the messaging that girls are receiving, rather than to confidence. Boys are being told, or at least receiving the message, very early on about the importance of their career, he says, whereas perhaps girls are being socialised to believe that, while education is important, their long-term career is not. This is evidenced by the fact that, despite girls now earning 58% of university degrees in Australia, they are still receiving subtle messaging inside and outside the home that their long-term career is less important than a boy’s.

Google has become such a source of information, that it has become the “go to” place before any other sources of information. In fact, it was back in 2002 that the American Dialect Society recognised the verb ‘google’ as the most useful word in that year, and in 2006 it was added to the Oxford English Dictionary. How do I know this? I googled it!

There is so much information on the internet that can be found through simply googling it. Most google searches result in thousands of results with pages and pages of matches to the search term found in just a few seconds.

I read about a movement this week that is calling for young people to do away with turning to google straight away, instead urging them to ask an older person instead. The particular movement I read about was called ‘Ask Gran not Google’, with the message that connecting with the older generations can foster generational sharing and personal connections.

I really like this idea. Students can ask older family members or friends information on a range of topics, and by asking important questions can really get a sense of the personal experience of those people. I believe such connection not only helps grow the student’s knowledge base, but can help them empathise and truly understand messages, emotions and information that go beyond the written text.

Whilst we encourage reading every day, personal connection between people should also be encouraged. Dinner conversations can be so beneficial, an important part of the learning experience for all students. Teachers at school also value classroom discussion, and students are encouraged to participate through contributing and listening to others on a variety of topics in each of their subject areas.

So next time you need information, resist googling it straight away. Talk to your daughters, problem-solve together and see your daughters connect with their families and others through learning.

A Night in the Cathedral
Last Friday evening, Ms Claire Bloomer, myself and 14 Year 8 students slept on cardboard on the stone floor of St John’s Cathedral. The girls were engaged in activities that opened their eyes to homelessness in Brisbane. It was a fun night, with tours of the bell tower, making paper houses activity and laughter across the Cathedral. A number of students from other Anglican Schools around the Diocese came as well. Despite a few sore muscles the next morning, everyone was refreshed with a sausage sizzle and returned home with a greater appreciation for their home comforts. The St John’s Cathedral Precinct is ‘home’ to a number of rough sleepers each night, and this made the experience even more real. We anticipate that this event, run by Anglicare, may be an annual experience for our Year 8 girls.

All-Ages Service THIS Sunday 4 November at 9am!
Our service is for all who journey in this world of confusion and busyness. Come along with children and adults of all ages to gather in a relaxed community of friends, celebrating the sacred Eucharist as we go. We will begin in the School Chapel and enjoy ‘Travelling Church’ … we will celebrate communion in the Sisters’ Chapel, then back to the Barley Sugar Garden for morning tea.

Dadirri Prayer Spaces – open for everyone
The Chapel will again be transformed for Term 4’s Prayer Spaces from Monday 5 – Friday 16 November. All are welcome to pop in at any time. There will be spaces to encourage reflection and response on Christmas, the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way, Remembrance Day and the Drought. I’m sure a favourite space this term will be ‘Calming Cottage of Cuddles’ with all kinds of soft teddies and friends to enable some extra comfort where needed. Special Services marking Milestones!
Over the coming weeks, the moments of ‘the end’ will be recognised through meals, parties but also sacred rites of liturgical practice. As an Anglican School we honour the journey through life’s moments with and through the sharing of the Eucharist, song, prayer and a fair bit of symbolic candle lighting!

Our Year 12 Boarders celebrated their final official Boarders’ Chapel on Thursday morning this week, enjoying the time together with their favourite hymns, followed by a breakfast.

Senior Students, with Years 6-11 and members of the wider community, will enjoy the Thanksgiving Service at St John’s Cathedral on Thursday 15 November at 10am.

Year 6 Girls will mark their conclusion of Primary school with their Final Chapel on Tuesday 27 November at 8:30am in the School Chapel.

And to mark not only the end of the school year, but the Season of Advent leading to Christmas, on Thursday 29 November at 9am in the Philip Harris Sports Centre, we will gather as a school community to celebrate, sing and worship together.

A Prayer for “Holding it all Together”!
God, I’m gathering the threads of my life, but something just keeps on unravelling!

Help me to gently gather the loose cords, the tired broken ends, and lovingly hold them.

Remind me not to tug too hard on those threads that might destroy the beauty and colours of the fabric of my being!

Most of all, help me to recognise those threads that need cutting, so I can be released from those things that are holding me back.

A 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s girl welcomes and embraces all in sharing the Christian message, the spirit of love through example, compassion, hope and charity. She demonstrates her faith by service to those members of the wider community who need assistance.

This week in Boarding we celebrated the Year 12 Final Chapel. We acknowledge the contribution the Year 12 Boarders have made to our community and the way they have led the Boarding House throughout the year. This year, Isobel Waugh, Andrea Gilligan and Olivia Zappala were our Sacristans, and through this role exhibited the importance of faith in our community. These three girls have been outstanding leaders, in both the whole school and the Boarding House.

The Year 12 Final Boarder Chapel was the last time that all of the Year 12 girls come together with the rest of the Boarding House and it was a time for us all to reflect on the positive impact that the Year 12 Boarding cohort has had on our community.

The word ’journey’ is commonly used to identify a period of growth, and in this instance, I think it is fitting to reflect on the journey of schooling. There is no doubt that the academic, social and emotional story for each of the Year 12s would sound quite different, yet there would be moments in all of their tales that would highlight times they have been inspired, challenged, excited and also frustrated and maybe upset. Through these times, students might recall the support of their family, a gentle hug or words of encouragement in getting an assignment completed, asking for some advice on a complicated maths problem only to realise that Mum and Dad had no idea, nightly phone calls home for the Boarders or just the regular drop-offs and pick-ups Mum and Dad have provided.

Just as significant are all the teachers and school support staff, who have helped the girls achieve their goals. There will be memories of a teacher who has given some extra words of encouragement to get through an assessment, of the friendships formed on camps and excursions and the welcoming atmosphere of a morning coffee at M’s Café. The people who have helped create these moments also feel a great deal of pride, joy and triumph when they see your daughters graduate in a couple of weeks. They have looked after and over the girls during their long or short time at school and I would like to encourage your daughters to remember the moments that mattered and take time to thank a teacher or school support staff member who has made a difference in their life at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s.

I am proud of each of the Year 12s achievements over the past year, their various successes in a wide range of pursuits from the great scholarly achievements, to the cultural pursuits of performance and music through to sport. Now, we look forward to hearing about the next stage of their lives.

Through my role as Dean of Studies and as a teacher, I spend time with girls discussing their progress results. It is becoming concerning to me as an educator that all too often the grade or result is this sole motivator for the students learning. This intense focus on the all-important result is distracting and devaluing what the student should be actually caring about: the learning and the skills. The grading of students is a necessity in the education system and much has been written about assessment and its importance. However, it is through the Continuous Reporting process we are endeavoring to switch the focus for the girls.

The Continuous Reporting process asks teachers to mark and write an individual comment to each student giving feedback on what they did well, what they didn’t do and ways to improve focusing on the process and skills of learning.

So, as the girls move towards the end of year assessment rush, remind them to go back to teacher feedback and their goals to guide their approach to study.

Years 9 and 10 Study Hall
The Years 9 and 10 girls will again have Study Hall and Exam Block on Friday 9 November and Monday 12 November. The aim of these days is to assist them to learn valuable study skills as they move toward preparing for the external exam process in their senior years of schooling.

On these days the Year 9 girls will complete their Maths - Round One and History Exams, while the Year 10 girls will complete their Science and History Exams. Alongside these exams the girls will be provided with the time to practice good study and revision habits. During the non-exam time the girls have the chance to meet with teachers to ask questions and check for understanding as they go over concepts for their upcoming assessments. The timetable has been split into times when the girls can work with teachers and small groups, as well as quiet study time. Each girl has been encouraged to devise a study plan for the two days to assist them to manage their time effectively.

We hope these days will provide the girls with valuable time and lessons about how to prepare for exams, as well as provide us with feedback to continue to support the girls on their journey.

Supervised Study Sessions
Supervised Study Sessions continue to be held each Monday to Thursday in the Library, from 5:00-7:30pm. As we are coming into the busy time for this program, can I please remind all parents who intend to use this service for their daughters to book sessions via FlexiSchools. The program each night only has a capacity to enrol 25 girls, so if your daughter turns up and is not booked in she will not be able to stay.

Please note, the Supervised Study Session will not run on Tuesday 13 November due to Speech Night.

All students are expected to dress appropriately. This means:

• No exposed shoulders
• No exposed midriffs, low or loose necklines
• Hair tied back
• Enclosed foot wear, excluding Ugg boots
• Skirts, tailored shorts and dresses should be a reasonable length for modesty
• No ripped jeans
• No lycra bike pants, leggings or active wear

Students are not permitted to wear a mix of free dress day attire with the school uniform. The school asks parents to support the School’s expectations.

Year 3 Camp
In Week 2, the Year 3 girls headed off to the Sunshine Coast and for the first time they stayed overnight at a campsite. At the camp, the girls participated in a variety of outdoor activities. It started with a visit to Australia Zoo, followed by beach activities and in the evening, camp fire activities.

I was very impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm and involvement as they participated in bush skills and games. Thank you to Lauren Richards for her organisation and also to Melissa Garbutt, Nicole Jonathan and Morgan Rowe for their support of the girls throughout the camp.

Whilst this camp is the last one for the year, it marks the beginning of our sequential, structured program that runs from Years 3 to 6, with each year’s program building on the previous year/years’ program. The common thread for each year’s programs is respect and responsibility for self, others and the natural world: that is, a person values, respects, cares for and takes responsibility for herself, other people and takes responsibility for the natural world.

Softball
The final team sport competition for Andrews Cup was held last week. We had over 50 teams compete in the Andrews Cup Softball competition. Congratulations to B Grade for placing 3rd and continuing the School’s run of achieving a trophy and/or pennant at every Andrews Cup competition thus far. The final sport for the year will be the individual sport, Gymnastics. We wish the girls in the team good luck for next week. The Softball competition is not only a big day for the girls but also for our staff as 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s hosts the sport.

Thank you to Morgan Rowe for her organisation and planning for the hosting of this event. Thank you to Lauren Richards, Suzy Edwards, Kylie Briggs and Karrie House who coached and Georgina Stevenson who helped out on the day. Thank you to Year 6 girls: Annabel Devereaux, Grace Turnbull, Margaret (Meg) Taylor, Lucinda Templeton, Brianna Higgins, Sophie Renaut, Skye Clifford, Mia Easton, Sienna Kendall and Piper O’Brien who assisted on the day and were fabulous ambassadors for the school.

Orientation Day
Last Thursday, over 50 new students joined our current students to experience their year level for 2019. Once the girls settled into their new year level, the day commenced with data collection activities. Students in their 2019 Year level participated in these activities. Prep and Years 1 and 2 teachers collected individual data. Other year levels underwent different standardised assessments: Years 4 and 6 with our teachers, students in Years 3 and 5 completed assessments administered by outside providers. Data collected on all students will help inform differentiated planning for 2019. These data collecting activities were followed by activities which will support the girls in getting to know each other and the school.

I enjoyed meeting many of the new parents before and after my presentation. I shared with these parents the holistic education we provide at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. Thank you to the class parent representatives who made themselves available to meet and mingle with new parents. It certainly contributed to our sense of community.

Open Classroom
This day concluded with a new initiative for parents and students, Open Classroom. This afternoon offered girls the opportunity to share their work with their parents and engage in learning conversations with them. It was wonderful to see the girls talking about what they have learned, what they need to work on and confidently owning their learning. Thank you to the classroom teachers for supporting the girls in their preparation for open classroom.

Day for Daniel
The week concluded with an Assembly to acknowledge ‘Day for Daniel’. This day is Australia’s largest national day of action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and prevention. It is held on the last Friday of October every year and honours the memory of Daniel Morcombe. The theme of the day is to wear Red and Educate. Parents, carers and educators are asked to start a conversation with children and young people about personal safety. On Friday, we started a conversation where we talked about the key child safety message for children to Recognise, React and Report if they don’t feel safe. I would encourage parents to continue this safety message. Thank you to the Student Representative Council for presenting this Assembly.

Congratulations to all students who performed at the Private Music Students’ Recital
Twenty students from Year 1 through to Year 11 performed at the Private Music Students’ Recital held on Wednesday afternoon in the Arts Centre Foyer. These recitals are great opportunities for students to develop confidence in performing in front of an audience. All girls gave wonderful performances and are to be congratulated on their efforts.

Stage Band Performance at Music Fest
On Friday 2 November, Stage Band will be competing in Music Fest to be held at Calamvale Community College Performing Arts, 11 Hamish Street, Calamvale. This is a valuable experience for the girls where they will receive feedback on their performance and have the opportunity to hear similar ensembles from other Brisbane schools. Primary Chorale Performance at St Mark’s Anglican Church
Primary Chorale has been invited to perform at the St Mark’s Anglican Church Arts Festival on Saturday 3 November at 6:30pm (corner of Bonney Avenue and Bellevue Terrace, Clayfield). Music Dinner
Music Dinner will be held next week on Friday 9 November, 6-9:30pm in Eton Hall. The Annual Music Dinner is an occasion where students and parents celebrate the culmination of a wonderful year of music at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. This year’s theme is ‘The Golden Age of Hollywood’. Music Dinner is open to students in Years 6-12 who have been involved in the following Co-curricular ensembles for the whole year: Amati Strings, Beath String Quartet, Stradivari Strings, Chamber Strings, Sculthorpe String Quartet, Belle Voci, Primary Chorale, Elevarsi Voices, Encorah, Wind Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Flute Ensemble, Clarinet Ensemble, Saxophone Ensemble, Elayne Jones Percussion Ensemble, Regale Percussion Ensemble, Highly Strung, Senior Rock Band, Junior Rock Band and Stage Band. Tickets are available only via Flexischools (). For catering purposes, it is imperative you include any dietary requirements and that payments are made by the end of this week (4pm, Sunday 4 November), as Flexischools will be unavailable after this time. Performance Presentations
Congratulations to all students who gave performance presentations during Week 4. It has been wonderful to listen to girls warming up in the Sister Helen Orchestra Room in preparation for the presentations, and also to see the smiles on their faces once they were completed, having achieved another milestone in their musical education. These presentations are continuing to assist in building a stronger culture of practice. Written feedback from the presentation will be provided to students and parents at the end of the term.

Music Support Group
The next Music Support Group meeting will be the Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 27 November at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room. We encourage parents from both the Primary and Secondary schools to become involved in this dedicated group of parents who consistently provide wonderful support to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Program.

Knowles Cup Tennis
Knowles Cup Tennis has been a mixed bag for the first three weeks. Following the rained out first week, the girls have been slogging it out over two very warm weekends. The Junior, Intermediate and Open A and B teams have played well despite the weather. There was some very strong competition from Somerville House and Stuartholme on Saturday 20 October, followed by Lourdes Hill and All Hallows on Saturday 27 October. With the current win/loss record, our Open A and Intermediate teams could have a chance at playing the Finals. We look forward to playing Fairholme College and Glennie in Toowoomba this weekend and the outcome for finals. Good luck girls.

Many thanks to the Tennis Support Group who have assisted with our home games, continuing to draw in the crowds with the sausage sizzles and morning and afternoon teas.

Church dress hire for Speech Night – Tuesday 13 November 2018
The hire of Church dresses will commence from Wednesday 31 October 2018. Before fitting, a completed and signed form (Hire Conditions of Church Dress) is to be returned to the School Supplies Shop, together with a deposit of $100. This form is available on the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s website, as well as from the School Supplies Shop.

Plain white, fold down ankle socks (not 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s competition socks), clean brown school shoes and a white ribbon (for long hair) are to be worn with the Church dress on Speech Night. Socks are available from the School Supplies Shop for $8, as is a white ribbon for $1.

The return date of the Church dress for all students, except Year 6, is no later than Monday 19 November 2018. Year 6 students must be return their Church dress no later than Thursday 29 December 2018. All Church dresses must be laundered, ironed and returned as per the ‘Hire Conditions’ for an amount of $70 to be refunded.

Old Girls’ Association AGM
The Old Girls’ Association Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 27 November from 7:00pm-9:00pm in the Mooloomburram Boardroom. Past students of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s are warmly invited to attend to share their views and ideas.

Professional Women’s Network
Our Professional Women’s Network events program for 2019 has been confirmed!
