168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø

The second event was that we are installing photographs of the previous school Principals of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s in Mooloomburram. This has been a big project – finding good clear photos of past Principals and ensuring accuracy of dates of time in the role. As you can imagine the photographs from 1895, when 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s began, are not entirely clear and some of the Sisters who were Principals (or Headmistresses as they were known then) appear to have eluded the camera. Nevertheless, we have found photographs of all the 16 Principals from 1895 through to the present day. Underneath the photo we have put the name and the dates of the period of Principalship, for example, Evelyn Heath, 1982 – 1993.

When I saw this, it got me thinking about the dash between the dates and how such a small thing represented strong leadership, high energy, direction changing decisions, and school initiatives which have become traditions and the fabric of current school life. Some of you might recall the poem called The Dash, referring specifically to dates on a headstone. Our graduating Year 12s also have a dash – most will have attended 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s from 2014 - 2018 although we do have girls here who have been students from Prep and Year 1. In all cases those dashes represented an unimaginable number of lessons, assemblies, excursions and much activity and laughter. So, in my contemplative mood I thought I would share the poem by Linda Ellis, called The Dash with you; it reflects some of the thinking behind The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way. I hope you enjoy it.

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend

He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end

He noted that first came her date of her birth
And spoke the following date with tears,

But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth.

And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
The cars, the house, the cash,

What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you’d like to change?

For you never know how much time is left,
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what’s true and real

And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
And show appreciation more

And love the people in our lives
Like we’ve never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
And more often wear a smile

Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
With your life’s actions to rehash

Information detailing the arrangements for rehearsals and tickets has been sent to all families in previous weeks and also detailed below are the rehearsal details conducted throughout the day on Tuesday 13 November at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre.

It is very important that, if you have booked tickets and no longer need them, please forward them to Ms Jodi Fisher-Grimshaw at JFisher-grimshaw@stmargarets.qld.edu.au so that we can reallocate them to families that may have missed out on tickets.

This is a compulsory event for students in Years 5 to 12. Secondary students and Primary prize recipients are required to wear church dresses and non-prize recipients in Years 5 and 6 may wear either their church dresses or Middy.

All non-prize recipients in Years 5 to 11 are to report to their Form teachers between 6:20pm and 6:40pm to have their names marked at the following venues:

Speech Night Rehearsal – Tuesday 13 November 2018
The following students are required to attend Speech Night Rehearsals at QPAC:

8:45am: All Years 5-11 prize recipients will be transported to QPAC from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s for Speech Night rehearsal and return to the school at 10:45am.

9:45am: Year 12 boarders and day students requiring transport will be bussed to QPAC from 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s for Year 12 Rehearsal. Year 12 students who are not prize recipients or musicians may leave independently from QPAC at 11:30am. A bus will be provided for boarders to return to the school at 11:30am.

10:30am: Year 12 students to meet at Door 5 of the Concert Hall, QPAC.

10:30am: All Years 5-11 musicians (not already at QPAC) will be transported to QPAC for Speech Night Music rehearsals. The Musicians will receive a short lunch break whilst at QPAC and students are advised to bring their own lunch on this day as the cafeteria will be available for soft drinks only.

All musicians will be returned to 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s following the rehearsal, prior to the end of the school day.

To ensure an effective and straightforward rehearsal for Speech Night, all students involved on the night must be in attendance and punctual for the transport provided to QPAC in the morning. Girls need to bring their own morning tea; and lunch (musicians - who also need to bring their music and instruments).

168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way – catch a duck in the pond! Underneath the (rubber!) ducks, is a prayer for encouragement and to develop the ideas of our 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Way.

Cuddle Cottage of Calm – literally a space to sit quietly and, if one wishes, to cuddle a toy.

Christmas Journeys – Place a footprint on one of the Christmas trees, reflect on the journey of the last year, highs, lows, challenges, successes…

By making some daily changes in the way in which the girls think and act can ultimately create a greater sense of happiness. It is important for them to understand that sometimes everything will go their way and on other days nothing will seem to go right. On those days when things are not going their way, instead of wasting their energy worrying about something they can’t control, take a deep breath and accept it. Having the right attitude will ensure their day will be good regardless of what they will face.

We encourage the girls to make a commitment every day to do their best, as their best is always good enough. Teaching them to reflect, particularly on the difficult days, is an important skill for them to develop. They should ask themselves, ‘What did I learn?’ and ‘What would I do differently next time?’. This will help them to let go of the day and move forward with a positive attitude. Encouraging a positive attitude towards difficult days is important for the girls to develop the resilience they need and ultimately to make their days happy.

While all twelve PEN principles offer valuable insight into learning, I would like to discuss two which I believe are very applicable to our girls’ learning. The first is ‘Embrace error to improve learning’ which Professor Pankaj reinforced by acknowledging failure as a ‘good thing’ for students. The Institute’s research in this area is quite simply advocating for students to practice the things they find difficult, the things they make mistakes at – as opposed to the things they find easy – as the only way to gain ‘meta awareness’ of personal skillsets and advance performance from novice to an expert (SLRC, 2018). In school, we talk a lot about explicit instruction in the classroom, yet this principle also challenges us as teachers and parents to let students consider new information prior to our explicit instruction to force errors and promote questioning.

With exams a near-constant in today’s classroom, the second principle reminds us of the most effective way to study and that is – ‘Spacing-Out Practice to Enhance Memory’. Given the business of school and life the tendency for students to cram their studies into the final days, or possibly hours, can sometimes be inevitable. But Australian researchers applying neuroscience, cognitive psychology and educational processes have determined that while cramming may provide short-term gains, spacing out study or practice will improve long-term learning, memory and educational performance.

Their research has shown that spacing out practice not only shows improved mental performance, but also applies to the physical environment, including sporting pursuits. Individuals can expect enhanced learning and memory if practice sessions are broken up and spread over a longer timespan than if they are all clumped together in one long practice session (SLRC, 2018). If we take this understanding to consider the girls use of tutorials and revision sessions, it would be far more productive for them to attend over the course of the term rather than one-off sessions immediately before the exam.

Heads of Year have this week spoken to Secondary students in regard to dress and behavioural expectations for the evening. I reiterated that all students are to have the following uniform for the evening:

• White church dress
• White ribbon in hair, which is tied back in a ponytail or braid unless hair is short
• White or flesh coloured underwear
• White socks
• Polished brown leather school shoes

In terms of behavioural expectations on this important evening, could parents please assist us in ensuring that girls do not bring the following items to the event:

• iPods and earphones or gaming devices
• Preferably no mobile phones. Any students with a mobile phone will need to place it in a collection box when rolls are marked at the beginning of the evening. Phones will be held securely with the teachers for the duration of Speech Night and can be collected at the end of the ceremony from the roll marking checkpoint.

I look forward to seeing as many parents as possible on this important evening in the school year.

This program is diverse and benefits the local, national and international communities. This community engagement is embedded as part of our school ethos and learning. It aims to develop a sense of social responsibility in our students. Each year level is involved in a project that is reflective of their understanding and is used as a tool to enhance and enrich classroom learning.

The service learning projects include:

Prep - Year 2: These students are busy making gifts and preparing for their visit to the retirement village, Aveo.

Year 3: The Year 3 students’ project is to plan, prepare and conduct a morning tea for Year 3 parents and parent helpers. This year, the girls are planning a Matilda morning tea, on 21 November at 10am. I am sure many helpers are looking forward to this annual event. If you have volunteered at any time during the year we would love to see you at the morning tea. Please ensure you RSVP to Primary Reception.

Year 4: The Year 4 girls have been planning and enacting their “Gift of Giving”. Each student has to give her time in any shape or form to a person in the community. They will then share the details of the impact of this activity with their class mates in an oral presentation.

Year 5: The Year 5 cohort support the residents of Symes Grove as their Service Learning Project. This has special significance for our girls, as it is an opportunity to connect with our Sisters. As part of their project, the girls have written letters to the Sisters and made gifts for all the residents. Reverend Canon Nicki will deliver these to Symes Grove on behalf of the Year 5 students.

Year 6: As part of the Year 6 cohort’s Service Learning Program, all the Year 6 girls committed to assisting a group of people in need. Earlier in the year, the girls knitted scarves and beanies for the Mission to Seafarers. This organisation was thrilled to be recipients of the huge number of winter woollies and Year 6 girls and families generosity of time given to create them.

The Service Learning Program continued in the Year 6 Cornerstone Project where the girls identified a real-life issue and worked on resolving it. Girls were to use the idea of connectedness to work for the betterment of family, neighbours, local communities or the environment. They were quite creative in finding the issue to resolve. From re-planting trees for koalas, making and selling scrunchies and using the money for drought relief, collecting toys and games for children in hospital, holding cake stalls for women’s health and cooking meals for people who are unwell, the girls learnt that the gift of time was valued by so many.

Other ways we have given to others
St Mark’s Arts Festival
Year 6 Wearable Art and Primary Chorale performed at St Mark’s Anglican Church Arts Festival last weekend. This was a wonderful opportunity for our girls to perform in the local community. It was lovely to receive feedback and accolades from the St Mark’s Community.

Spell-a-thon
The school also organised a whole school fundraiser for a community in need. We conducted our Spell-a-thon which ended up being a win-win for everyone concerned. The girls improved their spelling and we raised necessary funds for One Horizon, the charity we have supported over the years, in Nairobi, Kenya. We also contributed some of the money from the Spell-a-thon and the raffle money from the Father Daughter breakfast to donate to the Archbishop’s Drought Relief Fund. Each of these charities will receive over $9,000.

The Lawrence Cup, named in honour of Mrs Ros Lawrence, a long-standing member of the Primary Staff is awarded to the class with the highest percentage in the Spell-a-thon. This year it was awarded to Year 1. Congratulations girls!

Smith Family sponsorship
Thank you to the many parents who have supported our second-hand uniform stall throughout the year. Particularly thank you to Fiona Gapes who organises the stall each term. The money raised from this stall is used to sponsor a Smith Family child for their educational needs.

Sporting Updates
The final Andrews Cup competition (Gymnastics) was held last week. The girls achieved wonderful results in this competition; D2 second, C2 third and A and B teams achieving second, narrowly missing first place by one point. Also last week, we had girls compete in Andrews Cup invitational sporting competitions, Basketball and Hockey. Both Division One and Division Two Hockey players achieved second position. In Basketball, the A team also achieved second place. Thank you to Darren Marchant for volunteering as a Basketball coach. Congratulations to all girls for their efforts.

Prep – Year 4 Celebration Reminder
This is a time to celebrate the achievements of the Prep-Year 4 cohorts. The Prep children will perform their Nativity Play. Books will be presented to all children in Prep - Year 2 and children in Years 3 and 4 will receive Keys to Success award certificates.

Primary Chorale performance at St Mark’s Anglican Church
Congratulations to the Primary Chorale who performed at the Lantern Parade and Family Evening at St Mark’s Anglican Church last Saturday evening. The girls gave a thoroughly entertaining performance, singing a wide variety of repertoire. Thank you to Ms Brennan for preparing the girls for this event and thank you to all those who came along to listen!

Thank you to Percussion Ensembles
Last Wednesday, the Primary school was treated to a lunchtime recital by the Regale and Elayne Jones Percussion Ensembles given in the Primary Atrium. It was a wonderful acoustic space for the girls to perform in and they showcased a variety of different styles of music and percussion skills. The Primary students loved the energy of the pieces with many of the younger students dancing along to the music. Congratulations to all the girls involved on a wonderful performance!

Music Dinner
Music Dinner will be occurring on Friday evening this week in Eton Hall. There is much excitement in the Music Department in the lead up to the event where we celebrate the achievements of the girls in the Music Program at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s. Thank you in advance to the Music Support Group for their hard work in organising this special event.

Speech Night

2019 Private Music Tuition
If your daughter is currently undertaking private music tuition she will automatically be placed on her current teachers’ roll for 2019. Parents do not need to fill in a new application form. However, if your daughter is wanting to discontinue lessons in 2019, we ask that you please email directly to the Music Department at music@stmargarets.qld.edu.au.

Music Support Group
The next Music Support Group meeting will be the Annual General Meeting to be held on Tuesday 27 November at 5:00pm in the Primary Music Room. We encourage parents from both the Primary and Secondary schools to become involved in this dedicated group of parents who consistently provide wonderful support to the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Music Program.

QGSSSA Badminton
The final day of competition for QGSSSA Badminton was held on Saturday 3 November. Our Years 7, 8 and 9 teams were in action. All teams over the course of the competition went from strength to strength. Congratulations to the Year 9C team who placed first in a three-way tie with Brisbane Girls Grammar School and Brisbane State High School to be crowned Premiers. Well done to all teams on their results.

Swimming Camp
One of the keys to success to our Swimming program is the annual 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Swim Camp. The camp is an ideal way to provide students with quality coaching and team-building opportunities prior to the commencement of the 2019 school year. The Swimming Camp will be held on Wednesday 23 January – Friday 25 January 2019 and will include activities such as squad training, cross training, video analysis, meet and greet an Australian swimmer and social activities such as Wet’n’Wild and the movies. The Summer of Cricket is here!
Cricket has commenced for all girls with training being held every Tuesday afternoon at Windsor Park to hone the girls’ skills in anticipation for the QGSSSA Competition season in Term 1. All girls are invited to get involved and join this emerging women’s sport.

Knowles Cup Tennis
Congratulations to the Open A and Intermediate Tennis teams for progressing through to the semi-finals of the Knowles Cup. Knowles Cup is a short competition held in Term 4 involving the schools of Somerville, All Hallows, St Rita’s, Stuartholme, Lourdes Hill College, Fairholme College and The Glennie School. We wish our girls the best of luck for their semi-finals on Saturday 10 November.

Visiting Exchange Students
The 4 visiting Exchange students from St Anne’s in South Africa; Thato, Nandi, Alice and Chloe, had morning tea with Ms Curtis and Ms Gorrie and shared their experience so far and key learnings/memories they would be taking back with them. They will be going on their cultural excursion to Sydney with Ms Achari on 8 and 9 November.

We recently received updates from the following students who are away on their Exchange:

Cyrah Finlyson - Ursulinenschule, Germany
All is well in Germany! Both teachers and students have been extremely welcoming and understanding. During school, we are able to go to the library to work on our maths and other subjects, as well as during class. Some highlights so far are seeing Schloss Drachenburg, a medieval style castle, and hiking around the area, as well as visiting Cologne and seeing the Cologne Cathedral, which I absolutely loved! It has been very eventful, and I have loved having free dress at school and flexible timetables, in which we can leave early if there is a spare. Everything has been really great, and I feel as though I have already developed in my maturity and independence. I have attached some photos of the castle and Cologne. I will update you on my Exchange sometime during the holidays, as we are going hiking in the Alps and are visiting Munich.

Brenna Cox, Olivia Howard and Ella Willersdorf – St Anne’s, South Africa
All is going well, we’re having a blast over here. The first weekend that we arrived we went on a safari with the Sterns. For the first couple of nights we went to their own private game park, then travelled to Kruger National Park. We saw lots of amazing animals, and the Sterns were very accommodating. Then we flew from Johannesburg to the School, where we met up with the Schnells and the Browns. The first day at the school we were taken around and introduced to the way of life.

We started classes on Wednesday, and whilst not much work was done, we learned plenty of things about the culture at St Anne’s, such as waiting at doors for older grades and what boarding life is like. As we are all day girls at home, boarding is definitely a different experience, having a structured routine even after classes had ended. The girls are incredibly nice, and after a week of living at the school, we feel that we are fitting in quite well. Last weekend, Jess’s family kindly offered to host us, which gave further opportunity to see South Africa.

P&F Association
The 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Parents and Friends Association has established a strong tradition of giving back to the school through its social and fundraising activities.

The P&F is comprised of an active group of parents within the school. The Association is responsible for organising an array of events, which not only benefit the students (through fundraising) but also lead to considerable camaraderie amongst parents and friends of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Anglican Girls School.
