From the Principal

At Assembly on Tuesday we were able to share a video from Eddie Jaku to the 168��’s community. Thanks to the Campbell family who reached out to members of Eddie’s family to let him know that we had adopted his book ‘The Happiest Man on Earth’ as our book for the One School, One Book initiative. I cannot tell you how excited I was to have received this message and that Eddie Jaku is aware that we are all reading his book.

Our blog/forum remains open on the POD for everyone to make comments on the book and I know many of our parents and students have read the book as I have had conversations with them around the school campus. Please do not be shy – please just contribute to the forum as a way of showing us all how engaged we have been with the project.

What is emerging from the forum are a few inspirational quotes or themes from the book including these:

Our efforts today will affect people you will never know. It is your choice whether that effect is positive or negative.... The choice is easy. And it is yours to make.
It’s not just about survival, it’s about thriving.
Please do not walk in front of me, I may not be able to follow. Please do not walk behind me, I may not be able to lead. Just walk beside me and be my friend.

There are a lot of ideas in this book which can be inspiration for our students and each other and an opportunity for conversation with your daughter.

From the Deputy Principal

This week, a group of staff and students joined me for our first meeting of the 168��’s Way Committee for 2021.

In a previous eNews article I spoke about the 168��’s Way. The vision of 168��’s Way is to ensure social and professional interactions between all within our community – students, staff, families - that foster a sense of belonging, coherence and wellbeing. There are two key focus areas – firstly we appreciate and acknowledge (each other, students, parents), and we are aligned and accountable (to ourselves, to each other, to the vision of the school).

I’m pleased that some of our students will be driving this area of wellbeing in our school in association with our staff. We have a number of students and staff that are involved in the 168��’s Way committee that meets each term. Two years ago, the committee helped to organise a fun lunchtime activity of music, dancing and a sausage sizzle from Year 4 through to 12. With festivities halted last year, the committee is keen to begin celebrating again in 2021. In fact, they would like to ensure we have many activities across the Primary and Secondary schools, ensuring connection with each other each term.

From the start of the year it has been wonderful to hear the language of the 168��’s Way used by students and staff. In the Prefects Assembly they articulated this through their entertaining skits and messages, our Heads of Year and Primary class teachers have spoken about how the 168��’s Way is woven throughout, and in the Primary school there is a 168��’s Way assembly twice per term, where teachers nominate awards for students who have displayed the 168��’s Way through a particular action or behaviour.

I look forward to a year where our community can continue to embrace and foster the 168��’s Way.

Next week, on 9 March, we commemorate Mother Emma’s Day. Mother Emma was a former Mother Superior of the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent and was known for her strength and resilience. At the same time, she was known to be a kind and gentle person. Mother Emma will be recognised not only within the SSA schools and SSA community, but also throughout the Diocese.

Last year, a very informative article about Mother Emma was written for the Anglican Focus, please see link below for the full article. Our school Archivist, Bronwyn Perry, supplied some of the information for the article. An extract of the article has been included below:

“While it was certainly Mother Caroline who was the founder of the SSA, it was her successor, Mother Emma, who took over the community in its infancy and oversaw 30 years of growth and service to the education, health, and spiritual wellbeing of many Queenslanders. In a tribute upon her death, Bishop John Oliver Feetham of North Queensland said, ‘Of all the people who have lived in Queensland, there are few who have affected it so powerfully as Mother Emma. She ranks as the principal benefactress of this Diocese, which had always a large place in her heart’.”

Within the SSA schools and community, Mother Emma’s Day is an opportunity to give thanks for a life given in service. As part of our thanksgiving, Years 4 and 8 students will travel to St John’s Cathedral to share in the celebrations with students from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls School.

Term 1

Term 2

Looking ahead to Term 2, Years 4-6 students are invited to participate in preparation for Baptism and Admission to Holy Communion (preparation is done during class RVE lessons). The service will take place at the Years 4-6 Family Service on Wednesday 28 April at 6:00pm. Please note, those Year 4 girls and families who were not baptised and admitted to Holy Communion due to the cancellation last year, will be invited to participate this year. Head of Junior House Boarding

Service is an important aspect of being part of the 168��’s community. Girls in Years 7, 8 and 9 are issued service passports that are used to record details of service initiatives they have carried out. In Boarding, our aim is to provide service opportunities for our girls once a term to assist them in meeting their service obligations. This weekend, we are participating in Clean Up Australia. On Sunday morning we will be walking down to Albion to help clean up parks and streets around that area with other Clean Up Australia volunteers. We are hoping that this will become a yearly event in our calendar.

This Saturday, the Boarding staff and students are looking forward to meeting prospective families and showing them around the Boarding House. Our girls are very proud of their home away from home and love showing it off to visitors on Open Day.

As the Term 1 units of work draw to an end, all students in Years 7 to 12 are submitting assignments and completing a range of exams. Please see a few reminders below regarding assessment and exams.

Requests for an extension

A student must apply to the Head of Faculty for an extension by completing a Request for an Extension form. This form can be accessed from the POD and must be submitted five days prior to the due date. A medical certificate must be supplied in Years 10-12 in the event of illness. If a request for more than one extension is required, a student must apply to the Dean of Studies (Years 7-9) or Dean of Academics (Years 10-12) by completing a Request for an Extension form.

Sickness on Exam Day

If your daughter is unwell on the day of an exam, they are to alert their teacher that they are going to be away. A medical certificate must be supplied in Years 10-12 in the event of illness and missing an exam. Arrangements will be made for the student to sit the missed exam on the day of their return to school.

Special Provisions or Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments

Students with disability, a medical condition or other circumstances may require reasonable adjustments to assessment conditions. Special provision involves making reasonable adjustments, such as providing alternative arrangements for seating, equipment or time. If your daughter requires special provisions, Louise Burgman, the Learning Enhancement Coordinator, will have communicated with you about a learning plan. If you have any questions about these provisions, please contact us prior to exams.

Years 9 and 10 Study Hall

This morning, I spent some time at the Year 9 Year Level Assembly, speaking to the girls about their upcoming Study Hall. Term 1 is the Year 9 girls’ first experience of Study Hall and Exam Block, so we talked about what they should expect and how to understand the Study Hall schedule. The aim of these days is to assist the girls to learn valuable study skills as they move towards preparing for the external exam process in their senior years of schooling. When they are not sitting an examination in a particular session, the girls will have time to practise good study and review habits.

This term, Study Hall will be held on Tuesday 16 March and Wednesday 17 March for Year 9, and for Year 10 it will take place on Monday 22 March and Tuesday 23 March. On these days, the Year 9 girls will complete their Mathematics Round One Exam, Economics and Entrepreneurial Studies Exam, History Short Response Exam and Legal Studies Exam. The Year 10 girls will complete their Economics and Entrepreneurial Studies Exam and History Short Response Exam.

The schedule for these days was released last week and, closer to the date, the girls will be encouraged to devise a study plan in the lead up to their exams and for the two days to assist them to manage their time effectively.

We hope these days will provide the girls with valuable time and lessons about how to prepare for exams, as well as provide us with feedback to continue to support the girls on their journey.

Important information about Open Day

Open Day will be held this Saturday 6 March from 9:30am-12:30pm. There is a Queensland Health approved COVID-safe plan in place and we are pleased to report we have had record pre-registrations for people interested in learning more about a 168��’s education for their children.

The Open Day Program is now available to download

We wanted to share some important COVID-safe housekeeping with you, for you to keep in mind if you intend visiting the school on Open Day.

Only three gates will be open – Gate 1 Petrie St, Gate 3 Butler Street and Gate 5 Lapraik Street. All visitors (apart from staff and students who we already know are on site) will be required to check in via a QR code at each gate or register manually. There will be tent at each gate for manual registration and where you can also pick up a program.

We are required to count you in and out, so it is important to please enter and exit from one of these gates. There is an overall people capacity for the site (which we are very confident we won’t reach) but there is also a people capacity for discrete areas within the site (classrooms, Eton Hall, the Atrium etc.). The capacity of each area will be displayed at the entrance to each space and we are not permitted to go beyond that number. Classroom teachers will be keeping an eye on classroom capacity and there will be staff or seniors stationed at other venues.

Please be prepared if the classroom is full to be turned away or asked to come back later. These restrictions may also impact your ability to view your child’s music performances. We are allowed one person per every 2 square metres. For this reason, many of the Primary performances have been moved from the Atrium to Eton Hall which has a slightly bigger capacity.

Open Day also provides the opportunity for Primary parents to get to know more about the Secondary school, so parents should feel welcome to do a self-guided tour or tour with the Year 11s (tours leave from Circular Drive).

Please do not attend the event if:

you are or have recently experienced fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue, diarrhoea, vomiting or nausea, loss of smell and/or taste, OR
you have, in the last 14 days, travelled from overseas or a declared COVID-19 hotspot or had close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19, or are COVID-19 positive yourself.

If you become unwell with symptoms including fever, cough, sore throat, shortness of breath, runny nose, fatigue, diarrhoea, vomiting or nausea, loss of smell and/or taste during the event, please alert a 168��’s staff member. You will be directed to an isolated area within the school Health Centre where a nurse will assess your symptoms.

168��’s can refuse right of entry if anyone is displaying symptoms or refuses to adhere to the above COVID-safe measures.

Naturally, please also ensure the above applies to your daughter/s attending Open Day.

Physical distancing of 1.5m is still a requirement and there will be hand sanitising stations throughout the venue.

Pleased be mindful of our neighbours if when you are dropping off/parking near the school. It is very busy in surrounding streets, with parking at a premium. Please ensure you are not obstructing driveways.

We are looking forward to showcasing 168��’s to the wider community and welcoming our current community should they wish to visit.

Essential Skills

Last week, I shared the social and emotional goals of our camp program. Students also learn to demonstrate respect and responsibility for the natural world, which is why we have a natural world focus in each of the camps in Years 3, 4 and 5. When the girls participate in outdoor activities on camp, we aim for them to connect to and take care of the natural world. We believe this experience is such a vital part of a child’s learning, especially when children today have less experience with the outdoors.

These outdoor experiences not only provide opportunities to interact with nature, but also provide challenges and risks for the girls. As parents and teachers, we need to offer opportunities that are safe, but at the same time, challenging. Children need to take risks to investigate and push their limits in order to venture into new experiences. As the adults in a child’s life, we remove dangerous hazards, but not risks, which offer challenge. The camps in each of our year levels contribute to the development of the disposition of risk taking which sets the foundation for the challenge of learning. Offering challenge also addresses the final essential skill (Judith Locke), resourcefulness which is the ability to take initiative to improve the situation.

On the Year 4 camp, the girls were offered experiences which may have been new or challenging for some. These included negotiating an obstacle course at an Aqua Park, participating in beach activities at Alexandra Headland and being resourceful in team building activities. Thank you to Ms Richards, Mrs Edwards, Ms Rowe, Ms Bracey and Ms Garbutt for ensuring the camp was very successful. The girls are very fortunate to have dedicated and connected staff who selflessly arrange their own personal lives, so they are available overnight to support your daughter on camp. As a school, we are grateful for each of the teachers for their commitment.

Over the past few weeks, I have briefly addressed the 5 essential skills (resilience, self-regulation, respect, responsibility and resourcefulness) identified by Judith Locke. As the adults in a child’s life it is our responsibility to ensure that we support them in their development.

Family Fun Night

Last Friday night, the Pre-Prep to Year 3 students and families headed to school for our annual Family Fun Night. This night is a great start to the year for parents to socialise with each other and for the girls to have a pyjama party at school. This night doesn’t just happen; thank you to Ms Mary Surtees for overseeing the preparation and coordination of the evening, all parents for donating raffle prizes, class parent representatives for ensuring it was a successful evening for parents and to the teachers for providing activities and supervising the students. Each of the teacher’s generosity ensured a fun evening was had by all.

Congratulations to Lily Song (Year 8) who recently was awarded her Associate Diploma Performance in Violin Performance (AMusA) with Distinction. Lily was selected by the Australian Music Examination Board to perform at the presentation ceremony as one of the state’s highest awarded recipients. This is a wonderful achievement!

Whilst these are outstanding individual and team results, it was an all-round team achievement built on commitment, participation and performance throughout the season resulting in the 12 Years and Under team placing 1st overall. The entire team finished just shy of 2nd place by 1.5 points to remain in 3rd place for a second year in a row in the Mollie Gould Aggregate Cup and 3rd place in the Sheena Dyason Percentage Cup.

A big thank you to our parent spectators who supported us quietly throughout the night and to the 168��’s community who supported the team from afar by tuning into the livestream. Thanks also to Head Coach, Kevin Sargent, Swimming Coordinator, Mrs Uhlmann, assistant coaches and teaching staff for supporting 168��’s Swimming this season!

168��’s Swimming Club

The 168��’s Swimming Club will commence on Monday 15 March and will continue through the winter in Terms 2 and 3. The swimming club offers a seamless pathway for all students looking to develop their swimming skills at all levels.

In the Secondary school there will be a number of squads available - Diamond 1, 2 and 3, Silver, Gold and Orange.

DIAMOND 1: This squad is a transition into a competitive squad environment. Participants will learn how to function in a squad as they develop their skill across all four strokes. Introduction to competition is done in a fun encouraging and educating way.

DIAMOND 2: The second progression in the 168��’s Secondary Program aims to assist swimmers strengthen the foundations of competitive technique and skill across all four strokes. Participants will be encouraged to enjoy racing as they develop their technique.

DIAMOND 3: This squad aims to consolidate the foundations of competitive technique and skill across all four strokes, with an emphasis on medley swimming. Participants are urged to formulate race plans and develop strategies to achieve their longer-term goals.

SILVER: This squad caters for girls 14 to 15 years. Individual requirements are determined by the coach, based on personal goals/aspirations, swimming background and ability.

GOLD: Catering for girls aged 15 years and over who have goals working towards competing in State Championships.

ORANGE: This squad is a fitness squad for our Secondary students who wish to build on their fitness in the water for a variety of activities such as Water Polo, Surf Lifesaving or general health and wellbeing.

Autumn Fixtures

The 2021 Autumn Fixtures season is only one week away, commencing on Friday 12 March. Approximately 350 students will be involved in playing their first games of Basketball, Touch Football and Soccer against St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School and St Peters Lutheran College. This year, there are a record number of participants with their being 9 Basketball teams, 17 Touch Football teams and 3 Soccer Teams, indicating that 168��'s girls are passionate about their sports. Details of each sports season draws can be found on the individual Sports POD pages.

Water Polo

The Water Polo season is winding down with only two rounds of competition remaining. Three teams have already confirmed their semi-finals position - 12B, 13B and 18C, with many more teams having the opportunity to secure a semi-finals berth over the next two weeks. The weekly schedule for all times and venues is available here (PDF 147.2KB). A Water Polo break up for all players and coaches will be held on Wednesday 17 March at the 168��’s Swimming Pool, from 3:30pm-5:00pm. More details to follow soon.

Matilda, The Musical

We are delighted by the enormous support the school community has shown for the 2021 168��'s Musical, Matilda. As you will no doubt now have seen, the show has now SOLD OUT. This year, we have limitations as to how many people we can have in Eton Hall due to COVID safety measures around activities indoors. This includes singing, with a required distance between performers and audience, the required spacing between seats, the nature of the staging we are assembling in the space, the size of the hall, accommodating orchestra, sound, and lighting in the venue and more.

We are currently investigating whether we can possibly add any more seats and we hope to know more soon; however, this may not be confirmed until as late as the weekend before the Musical. Rest assured we want to accommodate as many of you as possible. We are not operating a waitlist; however, if we are able to release more seats, we will advertise this through The POD, with details as to exactly when these tickets will go 'live' so that you can be ready to purchase. Please have your notifications on for The POD to receive the most up to date information.

We would also love to see you on Circular Drive on Open Day, Saturday 6 March at 10:00 am, where you can get a sneak preview of two Musical numbers from the show. This open-air performance is free, accessible and available to all.

Jenny Stevens (’73) is a respected Old Girl of 168��’s, and an incredibly engaging keynote speaker. We are delighted to be welcoming her for our first Professional Women’s Networking event this year. Jenny will talk about how she has fought her fear of failure, and how young women can live the lives they deserve to live. Jenny has grown Attune Hearing to over 65 clinics servicing the medical community across 5 states. She is an advocate for patient care and innovation and has worked extensively on a number of fundraising committees for children with special needs. Jenny holds a Teaching Degree, a Bachelor and Master of Educational Studies, a Bachelor of Special Education and a Master of Audiological Studies from UQ.
