We formally farewell Reverend Nicki who is leaving us at the end of term to be the Priest-in-charge of the parish of St Mark’s at Clayfield. Although we may see her from time to time in her parent role and perhaps as a visiting priest, it is important that we acknowledge Reverend Nicki’s contribution and service to the school community. Reverend Nicki began at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s in 2007 as a part-time Chaplain; she became fulltime in 2010 and in 2011 became a member of the School’s Educational Leadership Team.

Reverend Nicki’s service to the school community will be remembered for many reasons, but particularly for the creativity and relevance she brought to Dadirri – the prayer spaces and the worship in our family, house and boarder chapels. She introduced the masterclasses in RVE to Years 11 and 12. She has ‘married’ several Old Girls and staff, baptised the children of Old Girls and staff and sadly conducted funerals of Old Girls and staff. Reverend Nicki has been steadfast in her commitment to the philosophy of the Sisters and generally the Sisters’ legacy. We wish Reverend Nicki well for this next phase of life’s journey. We are currently still recruiting for a new Chaplain at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s.

We also wish Angela Bowen and her family well as she starts her maternity leave from Term 2. Mrs Jessica Marrinan will be taking Mrs Bowen’s classes for the rest of the year.

I, too, will be going on leave in Term 2. While I am on long service leave, Ms Karen Gorrie will be Acting Principal; Mrs Nicole Devlin will be Acting Deputy Principal; Mr Tom McCormick will be Acting Dean of Studies and Mrs Louise Brown will be Acting Head of Faculty- Sociocultural Studies. Mr John Walsh will return to us to take some of the classes for Mr McCormick and Mrs Brown while they are acting in the higher positions during the term.

Here are a few tips to help overcome assessment anxiety:

1. Focus on ‘doing your best’, not ‘being the best’. If you consistently reinforce to children that you want them to do their best, then this is seen as achievable by them and builds confidence in them.
2. Be prepared. Incorporating extra learning opportunities will allow for skills to be consolidated before the test arrives. We often talk with secondary school students about not leaving study until the last minute. Reading more on topics that are being learnt, or simply ensuring all homework and extension activities are completed, can form study and therefore consolidate knowledge and skills.
3. Fuel up. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle that incorporates good food, exercise and adequate amounts of sleep will ensure students are ready to learn and therefore able to recall knowledge and skills easier around assessment time.
4. Remove external stressors. Arriving at school on time and avoiding the morning rush can ease a student into the school day and therefore assist them to be in the correct frame of mind for assessment on that day.
5. Read the questions properly. We can all fall into the trap of reading what we think we are reading, so it is important to encourage students to slow down and read the question more than once to ensure they know what it is asking. Parents can help at home by asking their daughters what their homework is, and what specific questions are actually asking them to demonstrate.
6. Focus on the important things. Assessment and testing is just a point in time. Students may do well on some assessment but be disappointed by their results on others. Schools and the curriculum within them encourage students to try their best and even take risks with their academic work in a safe environment. The important thing for students is for them to keep learning, even from their mistakes.

This year, in Holy Week, my family and I will be moving house… in some ways a particularly reflective time, but it will also be a busy, stressful and exhausting time! So… I know that I will need to heed my own reflective words I share here with you:

As we move towards Easter, and enter into Holy Week, what are we invited to do?

Listen. It is time to take a moment to listen to what your heart desires.

What makes your heart sing? Listen to the inner voice of your soul and allow a sacred moment to become more than simply a ‘moment’, but a way of knowing. A way of being. It is time to listen.

As the events of Holy Week draw us towards the Passion and the mystery of Easter, listen. Allow God to enter your space and sit with the silence and the peace that God can bring.

Breathe and pause … breathe and pause … the still small voice of God becomes louder as we reflect on the events of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. Hear the voice of God reminding you that you are loved. Deeply loved. Sometimes, we just need to hear that we are loved. Sometimes, that means everything.

You are loved by God.

The Day/Boarder weekend provides a wonderful opportunity for boarding families to give the day girls a unique experience and a better understanding of where the boarders come from. We hope this year we will have many Day/Boarding families involved in this experience.

On Thursday 4 April, we will guide the Year 11s through this course which will develop their knowledge of academic integrity, academic misconduct, submitting work that is their own and improving their work. The course is interactive and offers scenarios to respond to and case studies to answer. By completing the course, they will be able to define academic integrity, explain why it is important, identify acts of academic misconduct and understand how to avoid them, as well as understand how to make sure the work they submit is their own and understand how to improve their work.

We will continue to promote academic integrity in our Academic Policy and most importantly through our teaching about effective academic practices including using appropriate processes and materials in academic work, drafting practices to improve work and identifying when referencing is needed to acknowledge others’ work. The academic integrity course will take approximately 45–60 minutes to complete and will offer the girls very relevant knowledge they can use through Years 11 and 12 and beyond.

Students in Years 9 to 12 continue to meet with academic advisors and are going into a phase of checking in on learning goals set and discussing learning dispositions that may help with organisation and planning for assessment loads. They are also continuing to engage in Learning Analytics to look for teachers' assessment feedback to assist in tailoring specific areas for your daughter to work on. This process is designed for your daughter to engage in her results and to reflect on her next move on her learning journey to challenge herself. Academic advisors are encouraging your daughter to revel in the process of learning, however challenging and difficult it may be. After all, with passion, desire and challenge, girls are more likely to make it to the finish line and learn how to do things differently, making learning deeper and more meaningful.

A reminder also for you as parents to engage with your daughters’ results and assessment feedback through Parent Lounge.

Supervised Study
This is the last week for Supervised Study for Term 1. Supervised Study will resume again on Monday 29 April. We are still having some girls turn up for Supervised Study who have not been booked in via Flexischools. This service is being run to assist students; however, due to the number of girls just ‘turning up’, we are not sufficiently staffed and this is putting pressure on the tutors. Thank you to those parents who are booking their daughters in to the service. Remember to book in to ensure your places for Term 2.

To book, parents will need to log into Flexischools and select ‘Supervised Study Sessions’. Bookings are limited to 25 participants each night and when a session is full no further bookings can be made. Bookings are essential and should be made in advance to ensure a place is available. If dinner is required, payment must be paid at the time of booking and this option selected in Flexischools.

The problems our daughters face in their day to day lives appear trivial in contrast, but to them they often become all consuming. It is how they cope with these problems now that can form the basis of the character of the women they are to become.

As parents, it is natural we wish to make that journey to womanhood as smooth and painless as possible. But are we doing them any favours, when our desire to protect our children may result in them never experiencing disappointment or even failure in their young lives? This could possibly result in them having to deal with far harsher realities when they are older with no previous experience in dealing with letdowns. Sometimes they need to suffer the consequences of handing in an assignment late or forgetting their sports uniform, without mum or dad rushing to the rescue.

As tempting as it is, we cannot do the journey for them or even carry their load. Louise Porter, renowned Australian Child Psychologist, puts it well when she advises parents, “don’t just do something, stand there”. Resilience, according to Gilligan (as cited by Miller and Bentovim, 2007) is “a set of qualities that helps a person to withstand many of the negative effects of adversity”. The more we can develop this life skill now, in the safe environment of 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s, the better for our girls.

Kirstie Maclean summarises some of the qualities associated with resilience which develop through children’s life experiences as follows:

Good self-esteem derives from being accepted by people whose relationship one values and from accomplishment in tasks one values. Praise, on its own, will not improve self-esteem; the child has also to ascribe value to the achievement.

A belief in one’s own self-efficacy means having the qualities of optimism, ‘stickability’ and believing that one’s own efforts can make a difference.

Initiative is the ability and willingness to take action. Children and young people facing adversity are in a stronger position to deal with it if they are able to take the initiative in finding ‘creative’ responses.

Faith and morality can help the child to persist in problem solving or in surviving a set of challenging life circumstances.

Autonomy means the ability to make decisions. Young people who are autonomous know that it is OK to make mistakes and that you can learn from mistakes. They take reasonably well-calculated risks. Autonomous children and young people are good at self-regulation; they gain increasing control over their own emotions and behaviour.

Young people who have good insight into their own difficulties, including a realistic assessment of their own contribution and the contribution of others to those difficulties, are more likely to be resilient. Young people who are able to recognise benefits, as well as negative effects, from severe adversity are likely to be resilient. Insight helps people to take appropriate actions and make appropriate choices.

Nikki Townsend 

Their visit, at the end of their school year, always coincides with Harmony Day. This day is celebrated on 21 March and is a day Australia acknowledges the heritage of all Australians. It also serves as a reminder to respect and help others to feel a sense of belonging. In living the values of this day, we are encouraging a peaceful and respectful community.

Our Year 5 and Konan students certainly enjoyed participating in the intercultural activities led by the Year 5 teachers. Thank you to Mrs Emmett and Miss Surtees for their organisation. I appreciate the efforts of our staff and students to ensure Konan school members felt like they belonged.

Harmony Day comes on the back of the National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence. By acknowledging each of these days, we are highlighting to the girls important ways to interact with others, with the long-term goal of them becoming responsible and caring citizens of the future.

As adults in a child’s life, it is our responsibility to model such citizenship and positive interactions. I thank you for doing this and supporting the social education we provide your daughter.

Primary Chorale Performance
Primary Chorale has been invited to perform at Holy Trinity Church (141 Brookes Street, Fortitude Valley) for ‘Neighbour Day’ on Sunday 31 March 2019 from 2:45-3:15pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for our girls to perform at this special community event. There will be a variety of food and gift stalls, as well as other entertainment presented throughout the afternoon. Parents and friends are all welcome to attend.

Encorah 2019
As part of the 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s Choral Program restructure, Encorah will now be open to all students in Years 9–12. Encorah will commence rehearsals under the direction of Ms Stephanie Taylor from Thursday 2 May (Week 2, Term 2) with rehearsals each week from 3:30-4:30pm in the Sister Helen Orchestra Room (SHOR). The choir will work on a large selection of styles including R'n'B, soul, pop, indie pop, a capella repertoire, Latin music and music theatre numbers, just to name a few! There will also be some more traditional choral pieces in the mix as well. Ms Taylor has experience in arranging for vocal ensembles and is interested in bringing this expertise to the choir. Also, in 2020, there will be the opportunity for the choir to travel to France and Belgium to participate in the World Choir Games (further details below). We would love to have many girls involved in this choir!

Encorah Music Tour 2020
We are exploring the opportunity of taking Encorah on tour next year to participate in the World Choir Games which will occur in Flanders, Belgium, during the 2020 June/July holidays. This event is the largest global choral festival and brings together choirs from around the world. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the opening ceremony which brings together 20,000 choristers in a single venue. Prior to the World Choir Games, the girls will visit Paris, where they will perform in spectacular venues such as Notre Dame Cathedral and La Madeleine Church. Students will also take a backstage tour of Palais Garnier, the Paris National Opera House. En route to Belgium, students will visit Villers-Bretonneux for a WWI historical tour and also provide a performance at the Menin Gate Ceremony. The tour will then proceed to Flanders where the girls will participate in performances, workshops and competitions at the World Choir Games. This promises to be a truly unique experience, bringing together thousands of people with a love of choral music from all around the world. Further details may be . Autumn Fixtures
On Friday 22 March, the Autumn sports of touch football, basketball and football competed in their third round of fixtures against Brisbane State High School (BSHS). BSHS are notorious for being a strong competitor; however, our junior touch football teams experienced success. This week, we welcome Moreton Bay College to our home grounds in what will be another strong round of competition.

Touch Football Fundraising Barbecue

Touch Football Holiday Training

Cross Country Holiday Training
A reminder that cross country will continue throughout the holidays every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, commencing at 7am from Circular Drive. A holiday program is also available via the POD page.

Cross Country Camp
To complement your daughter’s experience within the cross country program, an invitation is extended to all girls to attend the annual 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s cross country camp.

During the camp, runners will participate in cross training activities, interval activities, trail running as well as recreational activities such as team building exercises, movies at Harbour Town and a visit to Urban Extreme. For more information, please see the POD page.

The Interhouse Cross Country Carnival will be held on Tuesday 2 April at Crosby Park. This is a great event for all girls to show their house spirit by participating in the 3km course. The order of the day is as follows:

UQ: Future Experiences in Agriculture, Science and Technology (FEAST)

Open Days
Most tertiary providers hold open days in July and August each year for future students. If you can't make the open day, don't panic. Many universities, private colleges and TAFE Queensland also hold campus tours and information sessions throughout the year. .

UCAT
Any Year 12 students who are seeking entry into medicine, dentistry and health science degree programs in 2020, please note that some pathways to medicine/dentistry/clinical sciences will not require the UCAT.
