English

English at 168¿ª½±¹ÙÍø’s provides all students with the opportunity to develop a rich understanding of the ways in which the English language operates in different contexts for a variety of purposes. The philosophy of our curriculum is to provide a balance between traditional literacies and those that are required to communicate effectively in our increasingly technological world.

Through English students learn to be

  • confident and articulate communicators
  • critical and imaginative thinkers
  • active participants in society
  • lifelong learners.

To develop these dispositions and skills they will

  • engage with a broad range of written, spoken, visual and multimedia texts drawn from classic literature as well as contemporary media and popular culture
  • create a variety of written, spoken and multimodal texts for a range of contexts, audiences and purposes
  • practise their core literacy skills
  • discover how texts can help them to develop a sense of themselves and the world around them
  • enhance their enjoyment and appreciation of literary and non-literary texts through exploring how they shape perceptions of the world and offer opportunities to delve into the worlds of others
  • foster empathy and an appreciation of different perspectives by engaging with texts from a range of cultures and time periods.
